If you don't think she is please don’t post. Please can you tell me specifically what she has said or done that is so bad. I promise that I will listen and not argue. If you could include links that would be great. If your inclination is to assume that I’m posting in bad faith and any reasonably well informed person must be stupid or bigoted not to know, then please just let the thread die.

And yes, I am angry, because a group of adults tried to ruin the life of someone who is a very good friend. A group of adults caused pain to her family and led to her children being bullied because of their lies.

I am quite sure you would be angry if the same happened to one of your friends.

But, at the end of the day, you can choose not to believe me. That doesn't change anything. But I also don't trust you with my personal information.

I have absolutely no interest in your personal information, what a bizarre thing to say.

I met Val McDermid and she came across as a pretentious twat. She likes to pretend she is a down to earth Fifer but really she is as middle class as they come.

Val McDermid also thinks that men with special identities should be allowed into women’s spaces and sports.

ChristmaslightsuptilJanuary · 18/08/2025 11:49

She’s a wonderful, amazing human who
is also astonishingly clever. The latter means that she generally runs rings around her haters which is always fabulous to see.

I think people must forget that JK Rowling is a person. Being a multimillionaire doesn't strip her of her right to an opinion, or to a twitter account for that matter. If people don't like reading what she has to say, they can unfollow/block her.

And if she's as awful as some would have us believe, surely most people would have done that by now? And thus, problem solved - platform gone! But obviously, that hasn't happened. She's sold about 650 million books, and she has 14 million followers. Can it be the case that all of those 14 million people are hateful bigots? Or is it possible that some are reasonable people who happen to agree with her, at least in part?

I've followed her for a long time because of her books, so I read her initial tweets and essay when they happened. Her language was a lot more careful and balanced then, it's true. She is coarser now, less timid, more blunt. A lot of people have brought this attitude shift up as a kind of gotcha - you said you'd march with trans people! You wouldn't now! And they're right, but I don't think it's a gotcha. With every dick pic, doxx, and death threat, she ran out of a few more fucks to give, and I don't blame her at all.

Explain the irony please. I am missing something here.

You had responded twice with prevarications as to why you wouldn’t provide proof, which in my experience is how people behave when they have no evidence. It was a funny GIF, saying it caused you ‘distress’ is slightly hyperbolic.

Again, I can’t comment on whether JKR’s behaviour was ‘disgusting’ because you haven’t provided the evidence that you claim exists. When you say all women, do you include TW in that? Because if you do then I’m firmly with JKR that TW are men, and should be treated as such and refused entry to the SSS of women. People can’t change sex, it’s binary and immutable. No doubt I’m also ‘disgusting’ for stating such heresy in your eyes but I think I can live with it.

Go back and read my post where I explained what I do, rather than just sit at a keyboard, to support women's rights. To ensure fairness in sport when it comes to trans women. To fight for psychological support for young people to help prevent them make life altering decisions.

I have repeatedly explained my friend was not trans. But apparently 'collateral damage' is acceptable. I've been told that many times (another friend, an ex colleague, has received vile abuse on a number of occasions for having the temerity to be over 6ft and not meet some sort of beauty standard). I don't pick and choose the women I support on how they look.

As I said. I would have been happy to provide the proof privately, but having been burned before, I don't trust you not to use the information against me in some way.

OK, I should have said "I feel..." I apologise for that. But that is the feeling I get about them. Would they stop and fact check whether they were joining in to ruin someones life? Or would they see "Oh, that is a man pretending to be a woman because this man just told me so.." and take pleasure from sharing the images / videos / tweets?

I honestly don't care you don't believe me. I truly don't. Live in your bubble where Graham Linehan is a hero, and JK Rowling a God and dismiss everything else that is said as lies. Carry on a keyboard crusade while others actually go out and try and make meaningful change.

You do know that I have absolutely no idea who you are? And I have absolutely no interest in finding out? You seem to have made up a whole scenario in your head about me and my motivations which is wholly bizarre. I am not responsible for whatever has happened to you or your friends or your friend’s children, on SM or anywhere else.

This thread is about JKR, whose stance on the rights of women and girls I support.

So, now you are assuming I live in a bubble, and you are assuming you know what I think about Lineham and Rowling. You are off the scale with your assumptions.
Go learn how to make substantiated cases about things, learn how to argue and debate properly.
As I said before, you have no credibility.

And I pointed out that JKR isn't always the angel she is made out to be. But you chose to say you don't believe me. You asked for proof, and I explained that would give away personal information about me I don't trust you with - having had private information shared on this platform before that I sent in a private message.

As I said to someone else. I don't really care if you don't believe me. But don't claim to be protecting women, or claim that JKR just wants to protect women, when actually she only wants to protect women who are in agreement with her.

I'm not posting on MN for credibility. I was sharing an experience. Which you, and others, have chosen not to believe because I won't share the exact details. Which is your choice. I was simply pointing out that, like SO many claiming they're just protecting women, they're only interested in protecting the women that meet their criteria. JKR, and others, showed zero interest in protecting my friend and her children (including daughters) from harm.

To me. Either all women matter or none do. I will continue work to support all women - whether they agree with my opinions or not. I don't pick and choose.

I think you seem to be getting the irony now from your retractions on later posts but it’s because you yourself are making ( very dramatic) public assumptions about posters based on no actual evidence.
The behaviour that you display in your posts is the same as the behaviour that you describe as being disgusted by.

eatfigs · 18/08/2025 12:31

So she didn't fact check something before retweeting and then deleted it soon after when she realised it was false? It's a mistake anyone could make. No need to despise her for it.

‘When I asked her, straight out, if she supported all women what ever their POV on the trans issue, she said no, she only supports the women who agree with her. Which is her right, but she says it so nastily.’

It would be lovely to see the proof of that, as surely if someone like her interacted with you you would take a screenshot. Because if not, it’s just hearsay.

I simply don’t believe that poster’s account of JKR tweeting that, and since they have neglected to provide any evidence, I have no reason to.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/08/2025 12:35

If JKR had ever tweeted “I only care about women that I agree with” I’m sure more people would have remembered it. So it’s a loaded paraphrasing, at best.

Namelessnelly · 18/08/2025 12:37

Viviennemary · 18/08/2025 08:32

I will bite. I dont like her because she comes across as she thinks her opinions are worth more because she is rich and a successful author. Compare her tosomebody like Val Mcdermid who comes over as a really down to earth and nice person. . That hasn't got an inflated ego because of success.

So how many charities and rape crisis centres has Val funded? How many Afghan women did Val rescue?

Do you support JKR, or just "all women"?

anyolddinosaur · 18/08/2025 12:55

@MarieDeGournay I recently bought most of the Strike series. They probably wont class as great literature, I dont actually care. I wanted stories that make me want to keep on reading. They do, I'd recommend them. You could, of course, get them from the library but I like books and intend to pass these on when I've read them.

You could completely disabuse people of what you consider to be their erroneous view of JKR in one stroke simply by c&p a tweet (obviously redacting any information that might identify you). This is exactly the sort of thing I was hoping for when I started the thread.

OP posts:
eatfigs · 18/08/2025 13:01

Searching on X for jkr "deleted" "retweeted" and rowling "deleted" "tweeted" along with several similar rewordings shows nothing like what @justteanbiscuits described.

Just people claiming that she deleted a load of tweets about Imane Khelif after being hit with a lawsuit (which is false) and that she deleted a retweet of Stephen King and deleted tweets praising him (which is true).

So I wonder, did this happen without anyone else noticing or am I searching for the wrong words to find any mention of it?

She could be addressing things like child poverty, she could be helping people like Marcus rashford did. I just find it all quite sad that the elite in this country focus on the divisive rhetoric rather than actually trying to improve things.

She funds a women’s refuge…
