Richard Coles embarrassing himself

Why do these mediocre men need to keep speaking? You’d think this was written by a 12 year old, who uses the word ‘baddie’ ffs? 🤦‍♀️ It’s so full of virtue signalling, ‘look at me with all these young people showing them how cool I am’ it’s absolutely tragic.

Hes not his brother so that’s irrelevant.

I think he’s saying how they have different views from him, not necessarily endorsing what they’re saying.

I agree. I don't think he's saying anything he needs to be embarrassed about.

Needmorelego · 17/08/2025 18:38

What's the back story of the group he is with?
Who are they?
Local book club?
Church group (he is a Vicar after all)?
Local litter picking group?
Is he running the group as the leader (so that's why everyone else is younger?)

He’s retired as a vicar, so I doubt it’s a church group.

LittleBitofBread · 17/08/2025 18:54

ThatCyanSheep · 17/08/2025 18:30

What I find bizarre is how he can sit there as a rich celebrity and think it’s a good thing the younger generation don’t think they’ll ever buy a house

How do you get that from what he says?
Genuine question.

The thread is interesting, but he's not his brother's keeper so you're right that it's not relevant.

Oh ok.
I read he is still involved with his church.
I have no idea if he actually is.

ShoeeMcfee · 17/08/2025 18:58

Poor Richard Cole, I rather like him.

mondaytosunday · 17/08/2025 19:00

What has his brother got to do with him? And how do you get that @ThatCyanSheepabout owning property?
And he had admitted the AIDS thing was the worse thing he has ever done.
@Needmorelegohe says it’s the film crew he is working with - right there at the beginning.

Oh, well then he might be, in (presumably?) a different/ less formal capacity. I don’t actually know, only that he’s no longer an actual vicar.
He also seems to be in the Faroe Islands just now; I don’t know if that’s where this group is?

HeronandChips · 17/08/2025 19:03

The issue here is middle aged women not knowing how the term ‘baddie’ is used these days 🤣

I like Richard. Seems like a nice chap. I probably wouldn’t waste time pulling this apart

He says in the post that he’s making a tv show with them.

I just looked at the picture.
I didn't read the article 🙂

Needmorelego · 17/08/2025 19:10

So a bloke is in a pub with his work colleagues who happen to be younger than him.
I have no idea what the OP is on about.
Although - I didn't read the article. Just the quote.
🤷

Absentmindedsmile · 17/08/2025 19:11

How embarrassing for him.

caramac04 · 17/08/2025 18:36

I didn’t know this! Oh the joys of getting old 😂

Yeah, my almost-14 year old uses it in a way that’s more a short form of ‘a badass person’ than a short form of ‘a bad character who exists to be a good character’s nemesis’.

CurlewKate · 17/08/2025 19:17

Can’t see the problem, frankly.

He’s talking about being with a group of young people who are part of the crew making a film out of his book and the difference in their experience. Explain what’s wrong with it, someone?

He says they know/like Harry Potter but think JKR is a baddie. ‘but’ is the operative word here. He’s using it in the sense most people on this thread have understood it.

The prose is a little pedestrian - it's like the X equivalent of sending a postcard. I'm unable to deduce any of his opinions from it, so don't understand the virtue signalling reference.

JacknDiane · 17/08/2025 19:25

I don't get the vitriol against him.

AlexandraLeaving · 17/08/2025 19:27

LittleBitofBread · 17/08/2025 18:30

If anything I’m hearing a little bit of shade towards his younger companions; the word ‘baddie’ is quite childish and maybe implies that he thinks hating JKR for her views on women’s rights is itself childish and/or simplistic.

I am hoping you are right. He is one of my favourites, and has been for 40 years.

PistachioTiramisuLimoncello · 17/08/2025 19:27

During the AIDS crisis Richard Coles for some reason decided to pretend to be HIV positive.

wtf

Baddie is a compliment in gen z slang!

lol, I was going to say baddie doesn’t mean what he thinks it does anymore!
