PEDANTRY ALERT:

What does it actually mean, that her sexuality isn't binary? Or indeed, what does it mean to describe sexuality as binary?

I'm genuinely confused.

The definition of 'binary' is "relating to, composed of, or involving two things." (Yes, I looked it up.) So what does it actually mean to describe sexuality as binary? What are the two things in sexuality?

It surely can't mean two people, can it? Because then Nicola would be saying she only does threesomes or masturbation. That makes no sense.

It surely can't mean sexuality itself, because then Nicola would be saying that she's neither heterosexual nor homosexual, and that would be a weird way to announce that you're bisexual (or asexual).

So what does it actually mean - to say that your sexuality is / isn't binary?

DrUptonsWallofSad · 09/08/2025 15:24

I suspect she means she's bisexual, but it's a bloody weird way of expressing it.

Or maybe she's about to come out as non-binary. Nothing would surprise me.

NebulousSadTimes · 09/08/2025 15:26

I see it as her pretending to reveal her sexuality while saying nothing about it at all. Like all the other word salad.

Thanks a bunch AmaryllisNightAndDay, now I have to climb down from my high moral ground because all I can think of is which French female politician?? But I really don't care. No, really. I'm above such gossip-mongering😏

Was it Lucie Castets? Not that it's relevant, of course... Mélanie Vogel?

Dammit Amaryllis, look what you've done!😁

Yet, as you said earlier in your reply to me
This thread is not speculating or mocking someone for their sexuality, it's saying we couldn't care less about it. 🤔

HelenaWaiting · 09/08/2025 15:55

No one's sexuality is binary. It's sex that is binary.

Yes, she is married to an academic called Jo Sharp.

Yeah, I thought so.

NaomiCunninghamHasHadHerWeetabixAgain · 09/08/2025 16:56

If the local library get a copy in, I'll probably get a lend of it at some point. If anything to see as much as what she doesn't write in it, as what she does. I won't be spending any money in it, but it's probably an interesting insight into her own delusions.

Arran2024 · 09/08/2025 17:29

Being non binary means either that you don't feel male or female or you switch between the two. It's about gender identity. It has nothing to do with sexual orientation.

Tbh I think anything she says is about positioning herself for her next job.

SionnachRuadh · 09/08/2025 17:48

Well her fangirling over Jacinda Ardern got a bit embarrassing. But I assume she noticed how Arden, facing defeat in the upcoming election, jacked in being PM of New Zealand in favour of better paid gigs at Harvard and the UN. A cynic might even think Ardern became PM because it would look good on her CV.

I'm sure Sturgeon is thoroughly scundered that she hasn't been offered a UN role fitting what she imagines her status to be.

I think this is a soft launch.

She's maybe just squeamish about saying the word 'lesbian' or 'bisexual', for some reason.

It can be hard for people to come out, yes even given how tolerant society is today and tbh even though nobody really cares, so I have a modicum of sympathy.

Although given how she supported the idea that lesbians were 'probably racist' if they rejected the idea of males being lesbians, and how she derided and dismissed all the lesbians who asked her to consider their rights, my sympathy is also somewhat attenuated.

Nicola Sturgeon is an absolute dickhead who has done so much damage to Scotland and women in Scotland that I wish she’d just disappear altogether.

maltravers · 09/08/2025 18:30

From the excerpt about Salmond:

“There was also never the merest hint of concern about the damage he did to the party he previously led… He impugned the integrity of the institutions at the heart of Scottish democracy — government, police, Crown Office. He was prepared to traumatise, time and again, the women at the centre of it all.”

she’s got a hide, I’ll give her that.

KassandraOfSparta · 09/08/2025 18:47

The Times stuff is paywall hidden. The timing of his case could not have been better for Sturgeon and her government. Concluded on March 23, 2020. We were all a wee bit distracted by the lockdown.

Can you not get to it with the sharetoken?

maltravers · 09/08/2025 18:56

I got in with the share token, thank you IGN. I wonder if she has the awareness to think about the damage she herself has done to party, institutions and the women of Scotland? No sign of it.

It’s very well known in Scotland that she lives with her long term female partner in the Scottish Borders and her husband lives with his long term male partner

Really? Tell me more.

I doubt it, I can't see even a trace of self-awareness.

Read it now - must have clicked on the wrong link. It's very easy to claim people said or did Z or Y when that person is dead and unable to have their say, isn't it?

And "After the reports of the two inquiries into mine and the Scottish government’s handling of the matter had been published" Shouldn't that be "into my and the Scottish government's handling"? Tsk Tsk Nicola, you should know better as you were educated at a time before the SNP fucked Scottish education.

Good, if ever a sharetoken doesn't work (they sometimes don't) give me a buzz and I redo.
Was this the inquiry where she couldn't recall most facts, or was that the Covid inquiry? And now she does remember?

netflixfan · 09/08/2025 19:09

Apparently it’s well known in government and in Scotland generally that she’s a lesbian. You’re a lesbian though aren’t you Nicola?

WhatterySquash · 09/08/2025 19:13

I think by “not binary” she means “not typical” i.e. “not straight”. It’s unfortunate because it makes it sound like she’s really confused between gender identity and sexuality, and that all her ridiculous anti-feminist principles that she was prepared to shaft the SNP and women for, are a result of having an incredibly poor grasp of what any of it means and just thinking what she was told to think by some woke 22-yo EDI advisor.

Either that or she’s trying to obfuscate, which she of course has a right to regarding her sexuality but then she could have just not mentioned it.

Or maybe she’s just trying to use being vaguely “queer” as a last-ditch attempt at getting the cred. As PPs have said, nobody cares, we’ve had senior lesbian politicians in Scotland, it’s not an issue. It’s the coming over as disingenuous / clueless / shifty that draws comment.

No I think this was the criminal case against Salmond which went to court in early 2020. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Salmond_sexual_harassment_scandal He was found not guilty of nearly everything, one charge was not proven.

At the time, he felt that there were senior people in the SNP who had colluded to produce evidence/witnesses and lean heavily on the Procurator Fiscal (like the CPS in England) to bring charges. But all of that was lost in the noise around Covid, then covid dominated the news for a year or more and after it all calmed down, nobody was interested in Alex Salmond any more,

It was the Whatsapp chats around the handling of Covid which she couldn't remember.
