Blimey you lot can't half talk... I take a day off and look what happens? Chaos I tells ya.

Bar gerbil, a stiff gin please.

😍

Gosh I'm Ms Popularity these days - Banned wanted to marry me because miniatures yesterday, now Magpie is fan-girling me because I can be pedantic in three languages 😎

Britinme · 08/08/2025 17:17

To be fair, that is an excellent reason for fan-girling.

Where have you [plural] been all my life??
Historically, I'm more used to being told not to be so bloody pedantic and oh god not another scale model - in three languages*😒

On the subject of models - just when you thought the world of 1:76 scale model uses was safe.....

edited to say : 'in any one of three languages', obviously not all three at the same time, or even consecutively!

edited AGAIN to say: that is a real bus, not an uncannily life-like model, but for £60ish you can have your very own 1:76 diecast model of it..

I missed the last one. Sad times for a semi-pro singer! 😆

FuzzyPuffling · 08/08/2025 18:26

It's a fine bus, Marie, but its headed for Reading Pride, so I'll wait for the next one, thanks.

Magpiecomplex · 08/08/2025 18:35

I did think that bus looked incredibly detailed for a model!

One of many brilliant things about Marie is that she enabled me to tell one of my fellow crafters (an 80 year old former primary school teacher, she really should have known) the answer to her question - what is the difference between an amadán and an óinseach?

I did credit 'my friend on the internet'.

dd spent two weeks at a summer school (language and history related) and she says the best thing about it was that she didn't have to explain once why she cared about this stuff. Everybody else was into the material that was taught just as much as she.
Could I have something very sour to drink and something very salty to eat, please, to chase away those last remains of today's migraine?

SionnachRuadh · 08/08/2025 19:50

My Irish will never be good enough to be pedantic about it, but I still have a fund of localisms not least thanks to this oul fella The Dictionary of Ulster Biography

Mark you though, there are many John Pepperisms that people might think are made up, but I literally did hear listening to the old folks when I was a wean.

The Dictionary of Ulster Biography

The Dictionary of Ulster Biography is about people associated with the historic nine counties of Ulster and includes those who were born here, or lived or worked here and who have distinguished themselves in some way.

Thanks @Magpiecomplex that's perfect, the cocktail is even in my favourite colour

SionnachRuadh · 08/08/2025 20:01

I'm just happy it's the weekend, and could do with something stiffish to drink.

And since it's the Bluestocking, I don't have to worry about doing something silly like agreeing to a drinking game where you watch Madness videos and see how often Suggs waggles his eyebrows.

Do you often find yourself playing such games, Foxy?

It's amazing what you find yourself doing when you're bored, and you can't watch Dougal and the Blue Cat every night.

MarieDeGournay · 08/08/2025 20:25

Hey Igneo I had a migraine today too - do you think there was a change in atmospheric pressure? I'm trying to track my migraines against atmospheric pressure, somebody told me it is implicated...

I'll stick to a nice cuppa as my post-migraine pick-me-up - and I usually have to eat something salty as well.
Besides the colour of that cocktail suggests that one of the ingredients is Swarfega😦

Happy to help with the difference between and amadán [umadawn] and an óinseach [oonshac[h], Deano!
The Irish language has a huge number of single descriptive words for people - a tall lanky person, as short strong-looking woman, a person who talks a lot, a silly woman, a silly man - there'll be a one-word descriptor for them in Irish.

And I love that there's one word meaning 'the hollow at the back of the knee' - ioscad [us-kud] Smile

SionnachRuadh · 08/08/2025 20:32

This is where my spotty knowledge of Gaeilge lets me down.

I can distinctly remember as a child being referred to as a glipe, a skitter, a hallion, and a cheeky ghost, sometimes in the space of a minute. I'm sure there are close equivalents in Irish.

Fangirling..

I can't irl my fangs, can you?

Oh, that was very good, Puffy!

Swashbuckled · 08/08/2025 21:15

I’ve just sat down after a full day. Admin stuff in the morning, then galleon restoration for the rest of the day. Had dinner then a long walk with the hound. Just out of the shower with a gin (thanks, gerbils).

Today my gold pendant arrived. It’s one I ordered from the funeral directors that’s designed to contain ashes. But because it’s gold (well, that was their excuse) it has taken ages to be made. I collected it today. So now I have bear around my neck wherever I go.

A friend came round last night and brought me some home made crumbles. I’ve just had one with ice cream.

This feels a bit “Dear Diary”, I’ve just realised. I’ll stop there…

Magpiecomplex · 08/08/2025 21:18

That's a lovely idea about the locket, Swashy. What flavour was the crumble?

I get two different types of migraines. One is hormone linked, even now that I don't have an obvious cycle anymore, I get a cluster of 3-4 migraines roughly every 28 days. These come with pain in my right eyeball and tooth pain in one of my teeth on the right side as well (looked at by dentist many times, no obvious problem with that tooth). I can deal with that type with Zolmitriptan as soon as I notice it, a shower as hot as I can bear and fizzy ginger cordial (I keep Belvoir ginger cordial and bottles of fizzy water for this purpose, most ready made ones have sweeteners which make the migraine worse), I'm fine and functioning after that. Every now and then I get a migraine that hurts on the left side (both left eyeball and a tooth) often comes with throwing up as well and Zolmitriptan doesn't touch it, that type I have to wait out in bed until it goes, today's was one of those. I have never found a possible trigger for it.
Atmospheric pressure might be worth looking at. People in Munich like to blame headaches and mood swings on Foen (air coming across and down from a mountain range getting drier and warmer) and there is some evidence that it affects people's health (it doesn't happen as often as people blame their grumpiness on however). I had a look at the wind map and overlayed the pressure data and there is quite a sharp line of change to the North of where I am at the moment. I could imagine that this pressure boundary has moved past us in the last 24 hours.

There were a few individual crumbles. Each a different fruit, but they weren’t labelled and I can’t recall. Very beautiful though. And crunchy. Just a pot luck surprise for the next few days 🙂. Although apricot was mentioned.

Magpiecomplex · 08/08/2025 21:35

@Igneococcus and @MarieDeGournay I have a weather wise ache from a broken bone which reacts to pressure changes. Took me a while to spot the connection but it's definitely that.

@Swashbuckled I love the idea of pot luck crumbles!
