Remember when the Pope was German and the President of the ECB was Italian?
I do remember when the Pope was German. Here he is when he was still Archbishop of Munich and Freising. The nun with the coffee jug is my Tante Hildegard :)

This is the first thing I read when I opened my laptop this morning:
A fellow-Stockinger has/had and aunt called Hildegard who served coffee to a future Pope.

That's going to be hard to beat in the 'Only in the Bluestocking..' stakes!

Thank you Igneo, that's made my day, and it's only 10.06 and I'm about to immerse myself in the SP tribunal - there's been a lot of gob-smacking evidence, but I don't think anything can match Tante Hildegard and His future Holiness😃

Saw one of @inkymoose's relatives today!

Awww! Where did you see this lovely vision?

MyrtleLion · 18/07/2025 11:32

I walked 5,500 steps yesterday and was reminded why I don't do walking today. My ankle is really sore.

Bring on the surgery and not being able to walk for three months!

EdithStourton · 18/07/2025 12:10

Myrtle, I really hope the surgery sorts out your ankle.

I've just had a city friend to visit. The fascination with combines was something to behold. It involved a stop in a field entrance to allow the taking of excited photographs.

The totally bewildered combine driver nonetheless obliged with a jolly wave.

I love guests who are so easy to please.

Blimey! I thought I'd pause watching the latest episode of Foundation to read the latest happenings on the thread about Sandie Peggie's tribunal. I see some Bluestockingers were also present.

It was riveting, including one of the NHS side saying the quiet bit out loud by saying Sandie was upset about undressing in front of a male.

And then ...

NHS Fife, one of the parties in the tribunal, made a public statement before the tribunal had finished for the weekend, and in the middle of the tribunal. Parties to legal action shouldn't make comments while a case is ongoing.

The judge has said an order may be made on Monday, with the implication that NHS Fife might be told to shut up. But their lawyers said nothing in the statement wasn't untrue. Except, the statement said the tribunal was about Sandie's conduct on the ward, and we know that she has been cleared of all the allegations made against her, including the allegations of misconduct on the ward.

I need a gin! And to finish my episode.

I think she met him several times. She sadly didn't live long enough to see him become pope.
She was in a convent right in the middle of Munich, with really good facilities, space, big kitchens, guest accommodation so they were sometimes asked to host events for the diocese. We also have pictures of her with various Bavarian Ministerpraesidenten (like first ministers) and Munich mayors. I stayed in their guest house for the first few month in my first term at university because even back then Munich was horrendous for accommodation, even worse now. It was great.

Maybe this is an atavistic thing, but when I follow a court case in Scotland I can feel my internal monologue getting mair Scottish by the minute.

I will be on the phone tonight saying See me? See thon witnesses? They annoy my brain so they do.

SionnachRuadh · 18/07/2025 18:01

I'd like to get one of yon academic linguists, like John McWhorter, to study Norn Iron dialect and write about its expressive power.

RP: My husband hates cheese.

NI: See me? See my man? See cheese? He hates it.

MyrtleLion · 18/07/2025 18:04

It has been a joy to read the Scots' take on the tribunal. My dad was a Weegie, and it's almost like hearing his voice again.

SionnachRuadh · 18/07/2025 18:07

My oul granda hated cheese. But he loved lasagne. And because lasagne was still a bit new and exotic when he was alive, we could get away with just not telling him there was cheese in it.

Who does? She could take a couple of capybara bouncers around town with her as bodyguards, I suppose.

Not satisfied with a couple, Bessie has a full squad. Here she comes, striding out confidently, back to the BlueStocking to see whose ailments need tending.

I think Beatrix Potter would take one look at the Bluey's menagerie and pass out.

Or, in the spirit of the tribunal thread, pass oot.

I am in awe of Bessie.

That pic reminds me of the 'Doc Stock looking uber-cool' one. Hang on...

It's a bit like those Reservoir Prods t-shirts you see on 12th of July merch stalls - which never work imo because everyone wants to be Mr Orange

I googled them & got nothing at all - well, only R/Dogs ones.

It's a very local thing - like tapes of loyalist reggae from the Bitter Orange Band. Most people don't believe this stuff exists.

My eye is a lot better but still not right which makes too much screen time a bit of a pain so I’ve not been following the tribunal threads. Any chance of some pithy highlights?

lcakethereforeIam · 18/07/2025 19:25

We've just arrived home from oor holidays. Well, we arrived a few hours ago but I've been catching up with the Sandie Peggie threads. I missed a chunk of the previous one (no.3254 i think). That statement from Fife 😲

I'm a wee bit sunburned. And I don't think my gob has ever been so smacked.

DeanElderberry · 18/07/2025 19:41

Their incompetence would be funny if they hadn't made such a serious collective effort to destroy Sandy Peggie. That stops them being comic numpties and shows them up as a dead-eyed goon squad.

It makes me wonder is the incompetence performative, in the hope that people will think their evil behavior was accidental.

Fife are really dumb. Got dumber through the day then threw a curve ball at about five minutes to four by publishing a smear campaign press statement which pissed the judge and both sides barristers off.

Statement is currently on version 3? Maybe 4 by now and fifes servers are melting.

Normal day really
