Meanwhile in Ireland, where we are wondering will this infernal heat ever arrive, I see a forecast overnight temperature of 6 to 9 and am wondering where my hot water bottle is.

Same here West coast Scotland. Overnight low of 7 C tonight. I was in a meeting with colleagues in France and Spain yesterday and they all looked like they were melting and it was raining and 13C outside my office. Sunnier today though, still only like 16C though.

MyrtleLion · 01/07/2025 12:00

Hello!

I have arrived.

MyrtleLion · 01/07/2025 12:05

I had a rejection email late last night. Who emails sorry but you don't fit the brief enough at 10.54pm???
Which of course meant I didn't sleep till 2am.
Feeling pissed off. I'm really good at what I do, but not getting any joy in getting a new job.

We certainly do Myrtle. Have a Rosy hug.

MyrtleLion · 01/07/2025 12:10

Thank you!

Can they not see from the diamonds and the coach how impressive I am?!

ifIwerenotanandroid · 01/07/2025 12:17

Thank you Magpie, hugs to Myrtle & a huge pile of pancakes for me, please, dripping with the maple syrup I can't have IRL. And a steaming mug of Earl Grey please, gerbils. I need something to set me up for the day (er, what's left of it) as I'm finally going to deal with admin I've been putting off.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 01/07/2025 12:31

I’m on the west coast too, @Igneococcus - near Glasgow. <<waves>>

Coming right up! The gerbils are serving in the garden as it's such a lovely day.

Oban area, waves back :)

MarieDeGournay · 01/07/2025 12:55

Woley, I'm sorry to hear that you have lost such a lovely neighbour.

And poor CatBastard will be visiting the patio and looking puzzled and disappointed for a while.

It's gloriously cool, grey and a bit damp here in Ireland, and I wouldn't swap it.

London was already getting uncomfortable in summer before I left, it must be close to unbearable at times now. The Tube in one of the current heatwaves doesn't bear thinking about😱

The noise and aggravation poor Fuzz and Mr Fuzz are having to put up with must be magnified by the oppressive heat and humidity😦

Igmum · 01/07/2025 12:59

Oooh those pancakes look fab <rustles skirts and engages bodice extension>. That’s rough Myrtle but you’re too good for them anyways.

Ooh is that a latte? Thank you gerbils.

Anyone else fed up of the bloody TRA ploppers? At least we’re safe from them here thanks to the gerbil guards. Actually I think there’s only one who changes name for each thread because we don’t seem to get two on the same thread any more. Gah. I’m staying here in the corner being disgruntled.

Ooh you lucky thing.

Still, temperature-wise Lancashire seems to be the winner at the moment. It’s clouded over here today, due some more rain which the garden will appreciate (it’s not dry but some of the pots need it) so it’s high teens, not too cool overnight.

And if I'd read it in time, I'd have added Myrtle to the list of commiserations - sorry about the rejection, and the unfortunate time it was sent, I'm sure it caught you unawares with your guard down, at 10.54pm you should just be quickly popping in to the Bluestocking for a nightcap and a dose of delightful surrealismSad

Exactly! I didn't read it till I'd decided to go to bed after reading about Gertrude and Baroness Trinket von Scritch - which was a very exciting read, I must say - and then realised it was a no.

What more must I do to get a job?!
And as my leg will be in plaster from August to October, I am worried it won't happen till later this year.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 01/07/2025 13:36

Perfect, thank you, Myrtle & gerbils (waves to Swashy offshore).

Boiledbeetle · 01/07/2025 13:37

I'm here!!!!

Can anyone tell me how photocopiers know the difference between when you are printing things out and it's not important and when you are printing things out and you really need the photocopier to work?

They respond negatively to stress hormones, I think.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 01/07/2025 13:41

I used to have a cartoon above my printer, I think from Private Eye. It showed someone using a computer & the options on the menu were 'Print', 'Please print' & 'Print, you b!st!rd'.

We've all been there, Boily. Hope you get it sorted out in time.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/07/2025 13:43

Meanwhile, I just noticed on the last thread that the giant wombat completed her journey here on a tractor-trailer. I was wondering if the AI came up with that image initially, or did it first try to fob her off with an articulated lorry? When I lived in the US I used to be quite confused by the number of problems on major roads apparently due to agricultural vehicles: ‘tractor-trailer jackknifed on the I-95’ type of thing.

Boiledbeetle · 01/07/2025 13:58

Sitting at home feeling sorry for myself as it's boiling and the thermometer is reading 22 degrees in my house.

Just got an email from a friend in France his thermometer is on 41 degrees!!

I suddenly am very grateful for my 22 degrees!

teawamutu · 01/07/2025 14:00

Do the gerbils fan you gently, in between bringing drinks with iceberg bits in? Could they?

<Flops dramatically onto something suitably fainting couch-y>

On the 18th century dress - I was in the V&A Storehouse in Stratford last week (bloody brilliant and free) and one of the best items was a modern repro of a dress from that era, with cross sections and holes so you could see how the scaffolding worked and where the secret pockets were hidden in the panniers.

Surprisingly practical as long as you're not trying to traverse narrow spaces.

EdithStourton · 01/07/2025 14:07

Commiserations, Myrtle. Job hunting is so stressful and full of hassle.

Boily, my solution to really arsey printer it to turn off both laptop and printer, then turn them both on again and have another try.

Sometimes I end up fielding 3 or 4 copies of whatever it was I'd been trying to print unless I can hit 'cancel' in time.

Ours has been saying 'toner low' for the last 6 months at least. DH is holding firm. He will not submit to unreasonable demands.
