@lcakethereforeIam "Bit of a call back but, didn't Lambourgini begin as a tractor manufacturer? Might still be for all I know."

Yes indeed it is. I like watching Clarkson's Farm (yes I know he's a twat but he's an entertaining one) and he has now had two Lamborghini tractors.

EdithStourton · 09/07/2025 18:01

Lovely squares, Cake.
They ask you not to block them. I hope they can block one of mine into a sensible shape... I have two to finish off and into the post the whole lot will go.

I've spent far too long on the Owen Jones thread today. It reminded me strongly of why I avoid the CITME board.

lcakethereforeIam · 09/07/2025 18:21

I'm not sure what blocking is...ironing? I'd like to have done another one but I can't find a pattern I like that isn't too big, requires another colour or is way above my ability.

I'd have loved to put this on a square but it's knitted in the round and I couldn't figure out how to.

I was wondering where you were, Cake, and hoped you were OK - you come roaring back with 'didn't Lambourgini begin as a tractor manufacturer?', a genuine, authentic, appelation controlée, purebred 'only-in-the-Bluestocking' question😂

Beautiful squares Cake💙
Thank you to all the needlewomen [see? I've educated myself and moved on from calling you all 'knitters'Wink] making squares to represent the Bluestocking.

Deano -
I have heard a serious early medieval historian say quite firmly that Pangur is a Welsh name and that his owner might have picked him up as a kitten en route from Ireland to the Alps.
Funny you should mention that, because it ties in Cher's earlier post about the etymology of 'fraoch' and 'grug', because I read somewhere that the reason Pangur must have been a Welsh cat is that the shift away from the P sound in Gaelic had already happened by the 9th century when the monk wrote his poem, so Pangur must be Welsh.

Isn't it lovely that this little white cat from the 9th century is still fascinating us in 2025?

Do any Stockingers have a white cat they could post a pikkie of? Smile

Blocking is when you soak the work, squeeze out as much of the water as you can (no wringing, rolling it in a towel works well) and then pin it to size on a foam board (or, in my case, if it's big, onto a carpet over a solid underlay) and let it dry.

Everyone, I urge you to pop over to the Woolly Hugs thread to admire the amazing squares made by Android - if she doesn't post them here.

AsWithGlad · 09/07/2025 18:42

Beetle and Magpie there, plus hearts and a hearty-trefoil. These are wonderful squares, Android.

BTW, did you see the picture on this thread , posted today at 18:14, from someone who is likely to lose her job if she keeps doing something she’s not allowed to but she wants to anyway?

Chersfrozenface · 09/07/2025 18:46

Re Lamborghini and tractors, it was only recently that I learned that the DB series of Aston Martin cars derive the name from the initials of David Brown, he of David Brown Tractors, who purchased Aston Martin in 1947.

Squee!!

Thanks, there's also the Dean (an elderberry & not, as DH suggested, a cannonball!) & Marie (a shamrock). Oh, just realised what you said - it's not a magpie, it's a puffling before it achieves full puffin features. Oh well, too late to change it now as everything's being posted tomorrow, & I wouldn't know how to anyway.

Everyone's favourite ambassador is enjoying the Giant's Causeway...

Btw, the reason I added people from here was that some said that they were unable to take part in making squares &/or wished they could be part of it. I believe Boily donated, too. It's also down to Boily that gMaud came into being. No wonder Boiled's beetle completely took over the square she's on, when she was meant to be 1/4 of it! She just wouldn't be smaller.😜

ErrolTheDragon · 09/07/2025 19:17

Just catching up on the thread after a day out (anglesey, including the ‘hidden gardens’, lovely).
Pals is how I (northern English though raised dahn sarf) typically refer to DDs many friends and acquaintances.
And someone - I think Deano? was wondering if it would be a good year for berries - we came across a couple recently at home in Lancashire who’d collected a good bagful of what they called whinberries, using an ingenious comb to strip the ripe fruits from the stems and leaves.

Perfectly proportioned, but bestriding the square, multiple threads, Mumsnet & indeed probably the entire internet like a Colossus, dahling!

Can't work out if that's an insult or a compliment!😂

It's true: I have no idea what I'm doing.

DeanElderberry · 09/07/2025 19:42

It is a compliment. You have no idea how much it means to me to be included in Swash's blanket.

Boiledbeetle · 09/07/2025 20:28

Did you know... in the second UTDOD the poems were ordered so that mine and Swashs poems started and finished the book. I then just had to get the other God knows how many to fit in between. That was such fun!!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I've not done that. I think I'd remember 😃

I've just had a look at the Woolly Hugs gallery. So much talent and care. I noticed that Android did one with cakes 🎂😍 I hope I'll get mine in the post tomorrow.

I'm off to Anglesey on Friday. It means I'll miss the beginning of Peggie v NHS Fife. The hidden gardens are lovely.

May your hot drinks in Anglesey not be made by any of my relatives. They can make one teabag last about 20 cups!

lcakethereforeIam · 09/07/2025 21:07

Omg, like fella's family. They never accept if I offer to make a brew. Their tea is essentially hot water and <shudder> milk.

Did anyone post anything about barnacle penises on the penis thread? I don't recall anything, just curry suggestions.

MarieDeGournay · 09/07/2025 21:10

Thank you to Android for her beautiful squares. I'm very happy to be represented by a shamrock, and a blue one - my choice of colour, it seemed like a nice combination of Ireland and the BluestockingSmile
It was really kind of you to do proxy-squares for those of us who are not needlewomen, or at least not confident enough to attempt a square, it's lovely that we can all send woolly hugs to dear Swash.

Thank you to all the needlewomen who made all those beautiful squares💙

I've hjust has 1/2 bot of white wine with dinner, so I'm going to explain taht away to myself as the wine interfering with my reading (link please, don't make me search for penis again 😂😂😂).

I'm not going to edit for spelling, either.

DeanElderberry · 09/07/2025 21:19

I'm pretty sure barnacle penises were mentioned.

I wonder was my fungus pic ever let out of jail?

I checked - it's still 'under review'. Poor old Phallus impudicus.

At least there's a reason for my lot, it's a branch of the family that have no taste.

Like literally they can't taste anything. So as long as the bag is still capable of even the slightest bit of tea colour you use it again.

Love this picture @Boiledbeetle
