Some recent news articles on how JKR's bank balance is continuing to grow she will just have to find more charities to fund. This is before the potential huge profit from the TV series hits in 2026.

Harry Potter's 2024 Max Viewership Numbers Reveal How Many Users Still Stream The Movies
According to numbers provided by Digital-i, (via Deadline), "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" was viewed over 40 million times on the Max streaming service last year. Though not widely regarded as the best "Harry Potter" movie by any means, being first clear counts for a lot. Digging deeper into the numbers, director Christopher Columbus' film reached nearly 20% of Warner Bros. Discovery's total subscriber base, which is pretty remarkable...
That's almost certainly why Warner Bros. Discovery is moving full-steam ahead on the "Harry Potter" TV show for HBO and Max, which is expected to premiere sometime in 2026...

For all of the controversy, the franchise, even beyond these streaming numbers, is evidently popular. "Hogwarts Legacy" was the best-selling video game of 2023, generating well over $1 billion in revenue for Warner Bros.

Bloomsbury: Fiction sales boost Harry Potter publisher
However, in its trading update for the year ended February 2024, the firm reported that revenue rose 30 per cent year on year in 2024 to £342.7m, while pre-tax profit soared 57 per cent to £49m.

Sales of J. Maas’s fantasy fiction books rose 161 per cent last year, while J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books continue to drive sales 26 years after their first publication.

No to both questions. But I wouldn’t spend my leisure time settling down with a novel written by someone I actively thought was a horrible person.

I don’t do a background check on new friends, or old ones. But if I think they are a horrible person I don’t seek them out.

I somewhat agree, more so if the art seems hypocritical or deals with the same area as the wrongdoing. I know rationally and logically the person and the art are separate but emotionally...
For example, I think I would avoid a film about a young girl coming of age made by a director who was known to be a hebophile. But with a film on another subject, I would probably be able to ignore or forget my feelings about the director.

I'm so happy for JKR. All based on her own hard work! HP is not my bag, though I really like the Strike TV series and the fantasy films. And HP books have been a social good in themselves as well as making her loads of money to spend on bettering the lives of others.

Congratulations, JKR!

SharonEllis · 19/08/2025 07:03

Do you investigate all the beliefs of a writer before you read their books? Or do you only apply this to JKR? Are there books that you now retrospectively dislike because you have found out something horrible about their author?

Yes. I now boycott all Neil Gaiman works.

Namelessnelly · 19/08/2025 07:45

Yes. I now boycott all Neil Gaiman works.

I think the dividing line for me is between beliefs and behaviour. If I disagree or even am repelled by someone's views, I can still enjoy their work or even appreciate them in other ways as well.

If they have actually done something awful, especially if it relates to people like me or a cause I hold dear, or the subject of their art, it's harder to achieve that separation.

It's a muddy distinction but that's how I feel.

Exactly. That is why I totally support JKR. She does so much for women, children and those suffering medical conditions and puts up with so much shit because of it. I mean, without her, there’d be Afghan women still stuck under the Taliban regime, children in war zones wound big get the help they need, people suffering incurable diseases would be worse off and Scottish women world not have one single sex rape crisis centre. Compare that with Neil Gaiman or Val McDermid.

I bought some Harry Potter Haribo yesterday.

It's good knowing that some of the proceeds will go to good causes like women's shelters (via JKR).

Does anyone remember the thread about OP's child asking for those Haribo and then she had a solemn discussion with the child about hate and bullying in the car park to explain why, no, she couldn't have the sweeties. Grin

You should be ashamed of yourself!

A horrible person who gives away millions to charities? Yes that really is vile lol. You are a hypocrite and I will call you out on it.

I’m with @Maddy70 in the sense that you can absolutely separate art from artist. If I applied a moral stance to all the authors I read based on their personal views I’d lose loads from the bookshelf.

I happen to agree with JKR in her feminism and love the worlds she has created. But even if I didn’t agree with her I'd be able to enjoy her work.

You may disagree with my take but I think it’s a common one and there is no need to be disparaging. Maddy didn’t sound jealous at all, she said she loves JK writings.

To a point you can but not when you repeatedly call the author names and accuse her of things she hasn’t done all of which Maddy has done on other threads. That, to me, makes someone a huge hypocrite. What really annoys me though is when people who hate her but like Harry Potter try and get her removed from further association with it especially when she allows some of those people to control use names she created for their website.

turkeyboots · 19/08/2025 18:17

DH brought home some Harry Potter themed Krispy Kreme today. It must be a fairly new partnership as I haven't seen them before. I hope it's a lucrative partnership for JKR. And clearly not the kiss of death for Krispy Kreme.

Ah. I haven’t searched Maddy’s other posts. And I agree with about the extremes too. I will stand corrected, especially in light of the deletion!

You know what really sucks?

I love JKR and want to support her as a person, but I just can't stand any of the modern Potter stuff.

I was the biggest fan ever as a kid but the newer movies and games are just disappointing and make me not want to spend money on them, even though I like her.

Don't worry, I didn't really even enjoy the originals, but I still admire her as a principled person. I

You are right though, most of the spin off stuff is a bit stinky. In line with other current film "franchises" really. Hollywood is really screwed up right now.

It's going to explode next year, it'll be everywhere. I'm loving the drip, drip, drip of the actors on social media. I can't wait for the HBO series. TRAs will be moaning more than Myrtle.

Can you come up with an example of something she has written which is more divisive than what you have written here?

My suspicion is that there is a lot of “TRA in the streets, Potter in the sheets” going on.

That crowd is big on kink and I bet they get really turned on by the transgression.

Oh well, at least if you keep consuming Harry Potter content you are contributing in some small way to women's rights being upheld and women in Scotland getting the single sex rape crisis support they need and deserve.

Imagine believing a woman who has fought tirelessly to get women out of Talibanic Afghanistan and funds a rape crisis centre all on her own with no government funding and accepts no donations is a 'horrible person'. You'd have to be one very messed up person to think that, or just really, truly hate women and rape survivors. To Meninists though, any feminist is a 'divisive' and 'horrible person' because to them women having any rights at all is 'divisive'.
