Simone Biles attacks Riley Gaines

Simone Biles has come out in defence of males in women's sports, and has attacked Riley Gaines for fighting against it. She said on Twitter:

"@RileyGaines
You’re truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race. Straight up sore loser. You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive OR creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports. Maybe a transgender category IN ALL sports!! But instead… You bully them… One things for sure is no one in sports is safe with you around!!!!!"

So, so disappointing. Both my daughters do gymnastics and are huge SB fans, so it is awful for her to show such contempt towards RG, who is fighting for a level playing field for women and girls in sport. And to suggest a separate category as if nobody has ever thought of that and tried it 🤦🏻‍♀️

Good Lord...says it all doesn't it...

Thomas is a well-built man - is the journalist afraid of being beaten up??

TwoeightTwoeightTwoOhhhh · 30/08/2025 14:10

Obligatory head tilt from number 2 there 🤣

Arran2024 · 30/08/2025 14:30

Yes, that quote has been derided on social media. Do these journalists really believe what they are writing? !

timesublimelysilencesthewhys · 30/08/2025 14:46

Saying all of the swimmers were indistinguishable and "In college, when word began to spread in swimming circles that Ms. Thomas was transgender", is perhaps arse covering? Retconing to excuse why journalists weren't talking about it early? How could they have known there was something different about him.

I agree that the piece wasnt as bad as it could be. There is acknowledgement that people dont want men in womens sports, and that throws up the dilemma- TW are women, but not woman enough for sport.

It comes across as on balance Gaines is correct, but is the wrong person saying it the wrong way.

The fact that reputable publications are still willing to tell bare-faced lies shows there’s a long way to go yet before we date mention the Emperor’s new clothes - ie/that trans identifying men largely look exactly like what they are: men.

It undermines any political analysis of the issue by the NY Times.

I don't think Trump spends any time thinking about women's rights, but this was such an easily understandable visual demonstration of 'they are lying to us'.

Do they not feel embarrassed at how ridiculous they sound? Saying Gaines' position was 'fringe' until recently... In the progressive wing of the Dems maybe, but nowhere else...

Helleofabore · 30/08/2025 20:49

I think that the NY Times is trying to sit on the fence somewhat. Perhaps, they are trying to appeal to both sides. It is like the recent series 'The Protocol' . That almost 'got it' but it still supported the Dutch Protocol because it didn't look further enough into the issue. It wanted to reject the modern US version while still remaining true to the Dutch Protocol, despite the reworked statistics pointing to a very different conclusion.

It is all about appearing to be 'moderate' when there really is no moderate solution.
