Donate £10 to Lumos and have dinner with JKR

JKR has made a very generous offer on Twitter:

J.K. Rowling
https://x.com/jk_rowling/status/1929113511004664078

I mean this, by the way. Donate £10 to lumos, I'll draw three names out of a hat and we'll have dinner. It could be KFC, but the wonderful JamesChiavarini has just suggested his restaurant, so it might be there instead (travel and accommodation on me if you're not in London).

Offer stands! Applications close at midnight on Monday. A £10 donation means your name will go into the draw.

https://wearelumos.org/how-you-can-help/donate/

If your name’s chosen and you’re outside London (or the UK) I’ll pay for travel and accommodation.

Once donations have been verified with Lumos I’ll select three donors’ names at random (can’t promise a literal hat, but who knows).

I’ll match the total sum donated to Lumos between first offer and midnight Monday.

And once my three fellow diners have been chosen, we’ll have a vote on whether we’re having KFC or going to Il Portico.

Additional offer from John Boyne:

John Boyne

£10 donated to Lumos. Whoever has the good fortune to win the raffle and have dinner with you, I'll donate £1,000 to the charity of his or her choosing.

This was inspired by JKR's ongoing twitter spat with Jolyon:

I've never sought to auction dinner with myself at a Michelin-starred restaurant with ‘a selection of wines from [my] own cellar’ as you have, Jolyon, but if anyone wants to bung Lumos £10, I'll draw a name out of a hat and we'll split a KFC bargain bucket.

Do you think the restaurant could put A Massive Salad and Roast Chicken (7 ways) on the specials menu? Just so the MNers can reveal themselves to eachother. They don't have to actually order them, just point them out and eye eachother meaningfully. Grin

And cutted-up pears for dessert?

DandelionDahlia · 02/06/2025 19:05

Just wondering - if JK asks the Goblet of Fire to spit out three chosen names, is it actually going to spit out 4?

This would boost my chances.

CervixSampler · 02/06/2025 19:07

There’s nothing vegetarian on that menu but Dd tells me kfc do a vegan burger so we are good. Dd is asking me what we’d wear. Dd has also donated.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 02/06/2025 19:07

I've been wondering whether JK's team will do any vetting of the people whose names are chosen.

It would be awful if one of the winners turned out to be a trans activist who just wants to throw their drink over her.

It would be but I think it would be one massive home goal!

She'd have her work cut out when I turn up with my suitcase....that's less than half of them...

Well, great, and can you also offer something for the school tombola for Thursday, Mrs Rowling? No alcohol after what happened at last year's beetledrive. Mrs Smollett has still not recovered, and the Primary Six hamster is yet to be replaced.

Why do you have so many?

I initially thought they would fund my retirement (rolls eyes) longer explanation is that I like how they've passed through many hands, the spines are slightly different colours and I like the maximalism of them - quick reply is I'm autistic, I magpie.

Boiledbeetle · 02/06/2025 20:14

I'll admit I've not read any of the Harry Potter books and I originally thought I didn't own any, however I have discovered I own one, in Latin. Alas, I don't read Latin so my Harry Potter book reading will remain at zero!

Yes please, would love to win this, 2 fold reasons as have adopted children and I just adore JKR and the fact that she stands up for us women - we need more women like her

I’d love to know how you ended up with that, Boiled!

I have absolutely no clue! Either a present from someone or possibly from when I bought odd (and this definitely falls in the odd category) books from Past Times many years ago.

Done. Amazing woman.

Orangemintcream · 02/06/2025 20:30

Would love to be one of the lucky three.

Would also love it to be a Mner.

myplace · 02/06/2025 20:36

@Snapespeare thats wonderful. I’m married to a magpie. He tries so hard but, just accumulates.

Acquires item A. Acquires item B as it’s is an obvious companion piece to item A. Item C is similar, but not the same so must also be acquired. Item D is tangentially related to item B. And on it goes.

By the way, can whoever wins fess up so we can all book the same night? I could justify splashing out for that!

lifeturnsonadime · 02/06/2025 20:42

Thanks for posting OP. I've also donated. Now what would I wear?

Elmrosie · 02/06/2025 20:46

Green, purple and white with witch hats.

Ahem.

Anyway, despite the name, I would not be eating salad at a fancy restaurant, no matter how massive it is 😁

Done. Dinner with the Queen herself would be amazing!
I once won a Sorting Hat at a twitter party run by Kap toys in 2018. My daughter was absolutely thriled when she opened it that Christmas!

anyolddinosaur · 03/06/2025 10:27

Donated. If selected could I instead send someone who is not a TRA but a "bekind" - JKR and pals might succeed where I have failed in helping them see the light.

I asked for gift aid information, hope everyone else has.
