Donate £10 to Lumos and have dinner with JKR

JKR has made a very generous offer on Twitter:

J.K. Rowling
https://x.com/jk_rowling/status/1929113511004664078

I mean this, by the way. Donate £10 to lumos, I'll draw three names out of a hat and we'll have dinner. It could be KFC, but the wonderful JamesChiavarini has just suggested his restaurant, so it might be there instead (travel and accommodation on me if you're not in London).

Offer stands! Applications close at midnight on Monday. A £10 donation means your name will go into the draw.

https://wearelumos.org/how-you-can-help/donate/

If your name’s chosen and you’re outside London (or the UK) I’ll pay for travel and accommodation.

Once donations have been verified with Lumos I’ll select three donors’ names at random (can’t promise a literal hat, but who knows).

I’ll match the total sum donated to Lumos between first offer and midnight Monday.

And once my three fellow diners have been chosen, we’ll have a vote on whether we’re having KFC or going to Il Portico.

Additional offer from John Boyne:

John Boyne

£10 donated to Lumos. Whoever has the good fortune to win the raffle and have dinner with you, I'll donate £1,000 to the charity of his or her choosing.

This was inspired by JKR's ongoing twitter spat with Jolyon:

I've never sought to auction dinner with myself at a Michelin-starred restaurant with ‘a selection of wines from [my] own cellar’ as you have, Jolyon, but if anyone wants to bung Lumos £10, I'll draw a name out of a hat and we'll split a KFC bargain bucket.

It's a charity that works worldwide to try to reunite children in care with their families.

Thank you! I’ll gladly donate

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 01/06/2025 17:26

Ahh, this would be a literal dream come true. Just donated.

Davros · 01/06/2025 17:34

John Boyne has got some integrity, having apologised to Glinner. I highly recommend his book The Echo Chamber, it’s a hilarious commentary on the world of woke

myplace · 01/06/2025 17:35

@Myalternate a charity she not only set up, but endowed so that all the running costs are covered. Every penny donated goes to help disadvantaged children.

heathspeedwell · 01/06/2025 20:00

I can absolutely understand the urge to scoop up seemingly abandoned children and take care of them. But the amazing thing about JKR is that she looked at what happens to put the children in that position, and she is addressing the root cause. Being reunited with their families is the best possible outcome for those kids and for the people who love them.
Proud to donate to this charity. Thank you OP.

I'll donate. But if I win then i wonder if I can send my dd. She would murder me if I went to meet jkr and didn't take her!

Just out of interest, does anyone know how much Jolyon was valued at, eventually? (Asking for a friend. No, really..!)

Jolyon was on 400,000 a year in 2019.

As a senior figure in GLP Joylon pays himself the same salary as an MP 93,000 at the moment.

A lot of this extra income that was from investments/property one can presume. He also had a lot of financial assets. This mostly would have come from his work as a Tax Lawyer which would have paid very well indeed as helping wealthy people duck taxes does.

Note JKR is famous for not using most of the tax avoiding tricks the wealthy do as a matter of course. She pays more tax than most of the Super Rich do. One wonders if JKR's sense of public duty is another reason that JM is upset by her.

Jolyon Maugham Trousering £400,000 a Year Net

Jolyon's most preposterous crowdfunded case has finally reached court, almost a full two years after the People's Maugham originally convinced over three

Done!

It's a timely reminder, as I've just been paid.

JumpingPumpkin · 01/06/2025 20:33

I never win anything and feel slightly bad for donating for the chance of winning, not because I’m a good person. I guess the end result is still a donation. Hey ho 😬

littlbrowndog · 01/06/2025 20:45

Lumos is such a great charity. Going to enter.

WeMeetInFairIthilien · 01/06/2025 20:47

Last time, I did sign up to the Lumos newsletter- it is really humbling, the good that Lumos does.

mrshoho · 01/06/2025 20:49

I'm donating but weirdly hoping I don't win as I would be a terrible dinner guest in her presence due to being reduced to a gibbering wreck! On the other hand I could imagine her being up for the craic big time.

EmpressaurusKitty · 01/06/2025 20:56

Winning a meal at Il Portico would be well worth it even if JKR wasn’t hosting. The food is amazing.

Me too. I just wouldn’t feel worthy. I’d have to get Datun or someone to sub in

JazzyJelly · 01/06/2025 21:06

Done. I'd love to thank her in person. Although as others above have said, there are far worthier women on this forum. Perhaps I could donate my place to one of the ladies who peaked me!

LeftieRightsHoarder · 01/06/2025 21:08

I’d happily share a bag of chips. Even bring the salt and vinegar myself.

Schweden · 01/06/2025 21:18

Hoping it doesn't require a receipt posted on X.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 01/06/2025 22:06

Done. I'd love to have dinner with JKR

healthybychristmas · 01/06/2025 23:08

Amazing. I'm happy to donate but would be even happier to share a snack with JKR!

PorgyandBess · 01/06/2025 23:13

Done! I don’t even want the ‘reward’. I’ll just support anything JKR lends her name to.

CervixSampler · 01/06/2025 23:13

Ooooh donated. I’d be happy with a tap water in the park for my dc and me. I’ve no one to watch them while I go to London to meet such a hero to us all. Imagine the awesomeness of meeting such an inspirational woman. I think I’d need smelling salts. I hope whoever is the lucky winner the most wonderful of times 🥰

murasaki · 01/06/2025 23:15

Donated. I'd be happy with a Greggs sausage roll while sat on a wall.

Although il Portico would be amazing.
