Not sure how to feel about this. I don't agree with someone taking the flags down but is it really a hate crime?

I think a car/bag/jacket is slightly different to a flag left in a public place. But I don't know, that's why I'm asking what the crime is. Are you thinking it would be classed as theft?

The car crime referred to is a specific offence, familiarly called 'twokking' i.e. taking (a vehicle) without consent.
This is when a car is taken from the owner, then abandoned/dumped, the thief not intending to keep it or sell it.

I can't vouch for 'arrest'. 'Identified' may have been the word used by my Mum source. It has been widely talked about on the island, apparently. Her carer told her about it when she arrived yesterday. The islanders are mostly a decent bunch and would not want to cause hurt, but as with most other parts of Scotland there have been independence-related issues around flying either the Union Jack or the Saltire, and the police have not always responded in the way that the flag owners wanted, or so I believe.

Whoever it is - for whatever reason - an 'arrest' over some flag tat is ridiculous!! When police won't come to calls out about domestic violence, won't investigate rape etc, it's clear perhaps there are too many police and we need to defund them if this is what they waste their time on when real crimes are happening.

Can you let me see the proof that Scottish Police have stopped investigating rape in order to solve the issue on Arran?

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 01/06/2025 18:28

I was going through and didn't find this transphobic space until a lot later

and you obviously liked it so much you decided to stay…

personally if i thought a board or forum was racist or homophobic or transphobic etc i wouldn’t be on it

(Individual posters can be those things…but they can be reported or ignored)

Pride month now makes my heart sink. And don’t get me started on the “progressive” flag.

When I was younger, and the pride parades were shown on the news, they looked like a supportive, fun, community day out. Lesbians supporting each other, gay men dressed like extras from the Village People and the odd drag queen showing off the sequins.

Fast forward to now and a lot of lesbians are excluded, furries (yuk) take centre stage and sexual fetishes are blatantly on display in front of children.

It makes me quite sad and I say that as a straight woman.

Gay people are going to pay a heavy price over the ideology that’s crept in, and it’s such a shame after the many years of fighting for acceptance.

WithSilverBells · 01/06/2025 19:06

There are four annual Pride marches within a reasonable distance of where I live. This year two have been cancelled due to 'lack of corporate sponsorship'; one has no details on SM for 2025, so assumed MIA; one is going ahead, though financial contributors amount to 10 people in the last two months of online collecting.

KathyMalloryKicksAss · 01/06/2025 19:30

@WithSilverBells Personally, I’d like to see Pride ‘rested’ for a couple of years, a bit like The X Factor 😁
Let the grown ups take charge and turn it back into what it used to be.

Never going to happen mind you, but maybe in a few years the insanity will reset itself.

outofdate · 02/06/2025 09:04

Were they the preferable Pride rainbow flags or the ugly Progress ones?

Sensible article by Mark Smith here from The Herald. A Pride hate crime on Arran? No, just a sign of where we are now | The Herald

Windy23 · 02/06/2025 19:56

I can't get that link to work @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

The same police force had to send their horses to diversity training to be able to deal with the crossings

Sorry what??

I had to read the above several times and I'm still wondering if I've misread it

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 03/06/2025 07:51

What a good use of taxpayers' money and police time.

There is a video from a few years ago where police horses were spooked and wouldn't cross a pride flag on the road, in Sheffield.

HaveYouActuallyDoneAnyWashingThisWeekMum · 03/06/2025 08:01

Dear God, the poor horses

PaulKnickerless · 03/06/2025 08:08

The glad being torn down are unfortunate. If the police are saying it is a hate crime, perhaps there is an aspect to the case that is not being reported on.

It felt as though LGB acceptance was on the ascendant about 10 years ago. I remember our area held a pride march and there was widespread support from all ages, with many businesses, even churches, hanging out the rainbow flag. Then came sexual fetishes on public display, plus the ‘no debate’ trans rights activists to ruin it for everyone else.

We exist, despite many people wishing that we never did.

We refuse to have our own identities used as a stick to beat ourselves with.

We make space for complexity without haranguing other people for their stated identities.

There are very few people that wish that you don't exist.

Its not that people are using your identity to beat you with, its that you are taking other peoples "identities" and forcing them to change to meet your ideology.

We make space for complexity without haranguing other people for their stated identities.

Really, the TRAs have been haranguing other people for their sex and trying to force people into labels of the TRAs making.

suggestionsplease1 · 31/05/2025 18:39

Putin and Orban would be proud of you, you have swallowed the rhetoric nicely 😂

Left out Trump, Musk and Modi! How could you slip so low? Do better.

KnottyAuty · 03/06/2025 09:21

We make space for complexity without haranguing other people for their stated identities.

Thats such an odd statement to make isn’t it?
The complete opposite of what I’ve observed.
The statement TWAW or TMAM doesn’t allow for any complexity or nuance at all, or facts either. And “fuck the terfs” is most definitely into the category haranguing imo.

But I suppose if your belief system eschews basic biological fact, then any other inconvenient fact based observations can also be ignored?

I find it absolutely fascinating how these illiberal and authoritarian thinkers believe they are the liberal left. Women and homosexuals are no longer allowed to express opinion/choose their own identity without threats and hatred and thats not haranguing? Weird.

In our house DH just can’t get over that Shon Fae quote “enjoy your erasure” because those 3 words consciously and succinctly express the nastiness of this whole movement.

PriOn1 · 03/06/2025 09:30

“We make space for complexity without haranguing other people for their stated identities.”

Unless they say they are not cis women. Anyone who says that is harangued and abused.

I think you’re ok if you say you’re a cis woman arent you? It’s if you say you’re a woman that you become a bigot.

ETA unless the person saying they’re a woman is a man obvs
