Guess we'll finally find out whether Imane Khelif is female or not. I suspect he will avoid the testing "out of principle" 🤭

OK if anyone is interested I have had the latest comment, apparently I argue like a child.

By this point, I'd be over it.

And would respond with something like, and you argue like a fevered misogynist, very likely typing with one hand

I thought that but then I thought - surely it was in the rules that the women's category was for women? The IOC had just chosen a very stupid way for athletes to prove their sex.

Were the rules specifically that anyone with an F on their passport was eligible or were the rules that only women were eligible and the IOC would accept an F on a passport as proof that you were a woman?

Not sure if I'm explaining myself very well but could there not be a distinction there? If it's the latter it's clear that IK and the Algerian team were knowingly breaking the rules but that due to IOC incompetence it was impossible for them to be caught out in this.

You outlined it well and I don't know the answer with regards to the rules. As ever the courts may be the only way to decide it. Caster Semenya has kept his women's gold medal despite it being shown in court that he is male. I still don't understand how dumb everyone has been. I think one of the problems with this whole episode of Olympic history from Semenya through to Khelif is that ordinary people can't quite believe that those in authority could be so unfair and that those in authority and the media have consistently tried to pull the wool over everyone's eyes. I really don't know why they have though. Is there any other explanation apart from misogyny? For a very long time I believed that Semenya was a woman with a dsd and naturally high levels of testosterone. Not being particularly interested in sport I only paid attention to the BBC reporting and genuinely thought Semenya was unfortunate to have a medical condition revealed in public and deserved support for what 'she' must be going through. I have to say this whole episode and the whole 'trans' debacle has completely changed my world view from one of a position of trust in those in authority to deep cynicism and mistrust. Maybe not a bad thing but it's uncomfortable to realise that the basis for one's world view is built on sand not rock.

💯

it absolutely turns you into a cynic.

I'm part way through listening to the latest Real Science of Sport podcast about this. Had to pause it in frustration. I really like the podcast, but the guys sound so patronising today. Calling Imane 'she', talking about the debate being 'toxic on both sides', talking about finding a 'compromise'.

If the discussion was 'should we let some men who dope into men's sports otherwise they'd have hurty feelz?', the answer would be Hell no!

Women do not need to even consider compromise and damn right we're angry about men being celebrated in punching women in the head! That isn't being fucking 'toxic' (I'm sick of that word btw) it's being fucking rational.

Aaargh!

And breathe 😊

So so true.

And don’t forget all the Diamond League winnings that Semenya, Niyonsaba and Wambui accrued over the years.

Yes, and athletes like Britain's Lynsey Sharp who should have won gold in the 800m. How could her earnings and career have been different.

I take it Imane Khalif is a no show at the Eindhoven Cup? Has anything been said?

I'm holding my breath...

Rio 2016 was another case of all the female athletes knowing exactly what was going on and being powerless to stop it. The after race interview with Lynsey Sharp was heartbreaking.

I really wouldn't. I have been checking for the latest and there is nothing. I now wonder if it will just be a no show with no statement released.

I have had a similar journey to you. The Semenya case was the first time I saw mainstream media and "the good guys" openly and actively lying, in real time. Still your average person thinks that poor Caster is just a naturally gifted woman picked on by racist terfs too dim to understand the complexity of the sex spectrum.

No doubt CS's story has spurred coaches around the world to try to replicate their "success" - Caster got away with it after all. The only recours female boxers can have IMO would be to go after IOC for failing in their duty of care. Female boxers were in real danger last summer; yes the IOC will mention passports and pass the buck to each country. But the IOC were aware of issues and ignored them.

I think in cases like this the mainstream media and the establishment are doing Putin's and Reform's work for him - now you have a sizeable part of the electorate that doesn't trust the BBC, "respected" media, institutions or the government. Country destabilised, society fractured, job done.

nauticant · 05/06/2025 10:48

How to sue the IOC:

https://www.charlesrussellspeechlys.com/en/insights/expert-insights/dispute-resolution/2024/an-overview-of-the-court-of-arbitration-for-sport/

Unsurprisingly it's very opaque and very expensive.

'Arguing like a child' tends to involve relentlessly asking questions. (See also the Socratic method, and the scientific method.)

People who don't have robust answers, but don't want to change their minds in the face of evidence, don't like that. You have committed the literal violence of making a comfortable man feel uncomfortable.

I will take that as a job done well then.

ThatCyanCat · 05/06/2025 11:34

Is that all he has? "You're like a child"? It's not only meaningless, it's rather belittling. I wonder if he'd say it to a man.

sashh · 05/06/2025 11:36

Yep and I'm 16 or 17 years older than him. I was a clinical physiologist many moons ago and we carried out tests on people going for what in those days was called a 'sex change'. This was while he would have been at primary school.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 05/06/2025 11:39

Looks like Imane Khelif will not be boxing in Eindhoven. 🤭🤭 Quelle surprise.

You can't argue with men like him, because he's not interested in the outcome of the argument. He's only interested in making you lose it, or fumble, or go on the defensive.

He wants to undermine you personally, because you've questioned him.

So you can go at it like knives all the live long day, but if you've any sense of integrity or fairness, he'll just wind you up.

Which is his goal anyway.

Personally, I would deliver as much of a killer comment as I could, and then block him.

"The organization of the Eindhoven Box Cup... regrets not being able to welcome the 2024 Olympic champion. "It is always nice to have such champions at your event," says tournament director Jeremie Besson. "But we have to follow the rules of World Boxing. "Fortunately, many other great champions are coming to Eindhoven."

I was considering making a list of people he supports, and the people he doesn't.

A great win at Eindhoven.

Thanks to all the women who planned to protest in person, everyone who shared the hell of what was going to happen and the handful of journalists that told the truth.

Even in the face of the authorities we can win this.
