I knew you'd all be keen to hear them.

"It is the responsibility of a feminist to be progressive, to learn from previous waves but to always be pushing towards a new one. “Feminism must be intersectional. Feminism must not be used to bully and berate both cis women and trans people.”

I was told by a policeman that once of those heavy, long handled, rubber coated torches would be a very reasonable item to keep handy in case of a break in power cut.

When I was a student (a long, long, time ago in a galaxy far....) security carried them at night, for exactly that reason. They needed torches, and having ones that could double as a cosh should they be assaulted was very handy.

Loving Julie's work.

In case anyone wants to enjoy the full long JKR tweet mentioned in the article:

https://x.com/jk_rowling/status/1926686856269189361

nauticant · 31/05/2025 17:38

I then wondered what had caused JKR to post that and came across this from Maugham:

https://x.com/JolyonMaugham/status/1927278342396404022

If he had any self-awareness he'd read the replies to his tweet and do some self-reflection.

murasaki · 31/05/2025 17:44

I'm not even sure his bathroom mirror reflects reality back to him.

SionnachRuadh · 31/05/2025 17:45

I notice he's now ostentatiously calling her "Joanne", the preferred nomenclature of the Trans UK subreddit.

I don't see why it's such an intrinsically funny name - I grew up with lots of Joannes, and Karens too - but even if the trans-identified youngsters find it a source of hilarity, you'd think a man called Jolyon would be sensible enough not to go there.

murasaki · 31/05/2025 17:47

You'd think so.

However he enjoys getting his jolly on about this.

SionnachRuadh · 31/05/2025 17:54

True, though the very name Jolyon Maugham makes it sound as if he should be propping up the bar at the Drones Club, in the company of Freddie Widgeon, Pongo Twistleton and Barmy Fotheringay-Phipps.

Isn't that just laying the ground for a "we were once friends... more in sorrow than in anger..." spiel, though?

SionnachRuadh · 31/05/2025 17:58

Possibly, yeah. It's a spiel favoured by the right-on man who is saddened when women he knows don't defer to his view on what a woman is. See also Owen Jones, Dave Renton etc.

I make no apologies for repeating this gem:

If we ever end up facing each other in court, my only qualm will be that it seems such a huge waste of taxpayers' money to have to construct a courtroom large enough to accommodate your ego.

ArabellaScott · 31/05/2025 19:00

Good lord. He seems to be having some kind of JKR induced breakdown. In the past twenty four hours, Maugham's tweeted multiple times about her, many of the tweets the same but with slightly different wording each time. Is he okay?

'Don't point out that
@jk_rowling
might not be reading Audre Lorde quite right or the famous free speech enthusiast will get her lawyers onto you quicker than you can say "intersectionality".'

'Don't point out that
@jk_rowling
might, perhaps, have misunderstood Audre Lord or the famous free speech enthusiast will get her lawyers onto you quicker than you can say "intersectionality".'

'White billionaire from her yacht cites Audre Lorde in defence of a white writer for a Far Right newspaper complaining about the heat she got for her bigoted attack on a woman of colour. What times!'

'"We see ourselves as others see us, and despise it, and then see it reflected in other trans women, and hate them for it. Our anger and hatred is against ourselves, and it feels like energy... But anger 'cannot create the future. It can only demolish the past.'": Audre Lorde.'

'Source: https://clareflourish.wordpress.com/audre-lorde-eye-to-eye-transgender/. She also wrote, appositely for JKR: "As white women ignore their built-in privilege of whiteness and define woman in terms of their own experience alone, then women of Color become 'other'." What other applications that thought might have?'

'Still waiting for your lawyers' letter @jk_rowling - or do you only send them to those who are easy for you to bully?'

'Wanna confuse
@jk_rowling
's 'we can always tell' crowd? It's not very hard but you can discombobulate them further - and put money into the pockets of a community she's trying to drown with her billions - by buying a badge from Trans Solidarity Alliance!'

It's actually embarrassing to watch a grown ass man meltdown like this.

I suppose he thinks it attracts attention, which might bring in more cash? Or is he just actually just having some kind of midlife red-mist hurt-ego-feels thing?

Jolyon is MAD AS HELL and he's not gonna take it any more!

(I assume he's never watched Network all the way to the end)

SionnachRuadh · 31/05/2025 19:08

Actually it's reached the point where it's on the cusp of being hilarious and being extremely uncomfortable. I genuinely think he's having some kind of emotional breakdown.

Getting the same vibes from him right now as I got watching David Icke going on the Terry Wogan show.

nauticant · 31/05/2025 19:09

It looks like Maugham's life is going in a number of directions that he'd prefer it not to go in, this has made him angry, and so he's fixated on a person to work out his angst against.

If he wasn't such an obnoxious individual, who in my view is causing harm, I'd be inclined to have sympathy for him.

EdithStourton · 31/05/2025 19:12

I think Jolyon should put his phone away and go and walk the dog. Or be sent out into the garden to deadhead the roses.

Or go and play tennis. Anything, but just told to lay off Twix before JKR decides she really has had enough of him.

lcakethereforeIam · 31/05/2025 19:14

Bloody hell! At this rate he's going to be up for harassment.

Yes, I'm not finding it funny at all. All those tweets in succession, all desperately flailing about seeking JKR's attention, tagging her, pestering her.

This won't help:

It certainly isn't helping his professional standing. Even his supporters are (quite politely) asking him to stop.

The last person I saw flailing about like that, desperate for JKR's attention, was India Willoughby.

Jolyon should really take that as a cautionary tale. But at this point, there's a 50/50 chance of him declaring that he's now Julie.

nauticant · 31/05/2025 19:18

I suspect JKR has been advised that she shouldn't sue individuals for defamation because that would cause all kinds of problems. But her team will have said that it might be sensible to have some exceptions to that, and one of them will be Maugham.
