It’s been a while since I last saw everyone!

Welcome to everyone, regulars, lurkers, newly ventured in.

A place for women to discuss whatever takes their fancy, where the bar staff are attentive gerbils, Rosy the Red Panda is available for cuddles and all sweet things have no calories and all alcohol leaves the drinker slightly merry and hangover-free.

The Bluestocking Women's Pub, where brains can exist in a single state | Mumsnet

Welcome all. The booze here is minimally intoxicating, the food is calorie free and the staff are warm and cuddly. And if the thread title sounds nons...

Can anyone find my focus and motivation? I have to do something spectacularly dull, but necessary, and I think I must have left both focus and motivation in my other jacket.

Maybe it’s gone awol with mine?

Congratulations @DeanElderberry! I'm also very excited about your imminent Published Author status.

It must be near impossible to sum up your personality and achievements in one sentence. Will you refer to yourself in the third person? "Dean Elderberry is simply marvellous, I cannot recommend her superb abilities and quiet brilliance highly enough - she is an erudite writer and horticulturalist as well as having accumulated enough wit and wisdom to fill at least six fat volumes of deathless prose, and poetry to boot."

Gosh the temptation to do more than one sentence is very strong.

I'd be tempted to go to the other extreme and go for a single word. That word would be either Indescribable, Brilliant, or Legendary.

Magpies have other jackets??
'Hmmm let's see.... the black and white today? no I wore that yesterday. And the day before. Maybe I'll go for the... I know, I haven't work the white and black in ages!'😃
Hope the mugs of strong tea/coffee have done the trick and you are flying around doing your dull task before getting on with your day with vim and vigour!

Promise yourself a big treat for when you've finished. Maybe something you don't normally allow yourself - big meaning special or a bit naughty.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/05/2025 11:53

Well, I found some motivation tucked under a cushion and have found the cause of a weird bug … sodding Windows having case insensitive file names. Grrr. Need to discuss with colleagues who won’t be awake yet on the flimsy excuse of being in California.

Magpiecomplex · 30/05/2025 12:14

That is a pathetic excuse, Errol. Imagine being so special you need your own time zone. 😉😂

MyrtleLion · 30/05/2025 12:45

Nearly ready to go away. Hair and nails done, as well as eyebrows. Nephew birthday present bought - why do Nintendo vouchers go from £15 to £50? No £25 or £30. Had to buy two.
Clothes laid out for packing as per strict instructions from the Walrus. He is in charge. I am of course, perfectly capable of packing myself, but apparently he has a system that I don’t understand, and I will get in the way.
And he wasn’t happy that I didn’t have a place to put everything we need tonight before packing the last bits tomorrow. So he had to choose a place that worked for him.
He is adorable but very particular about such things. I’m more go with the flow, but we compromise on only going for 10 days because he hates being away for longer and needs to decompress before going back to work. (I prefer to stop on a Friday at 6pm then immediately leave and arrive home two weeks later at 9pm on a Sunday.) So I’m happy to comply with his system because I can spend the afternoon hanging out on MN relaxing, while he does the ironing and packs.

@MyrtleLion You have a walrus husband who does the IRONING and the PACKING?

No, this has got to be a wind-up.

Agreed. I applaud Myrtle's dedication to the long game - that's quite some build up to trolling us! 😂

MyrtleLion · 30/05/2025 14:19

It’s not a windup.

He literally irons, packs, does the main washing (I do towels and bedding), does the big shop, and often pops out for bits during the day, and he cooks and cleans the hob and oven. He unloads the dishwasher.

I sort out insurances, mortgage, car service, money and budget, including big purchases like furniture. I deal with the tradespeople like the plumber, electrician etc. I load the dishwasher and do my own washing of delicates because a lot of my clothes are expensive and he doesn’t understand that dark clothes can still bleed into pale clothes even after 100 washes. I arranged for the decorating of our new house and the house move. I worked with the lawyers for wills and house move.

We have a cleaner and we don’t garden, but we’re getting the tiny patch of weeds we have made into a patio soon. And I arrange and manage those things.

DSD does her own washing, and he cooks and shops for her. She has learning disabilities. He bulk cooks for everyone so it’s not a problem to add a bit more for her to reheat daily.

We are having our en-suite refurbished and I have done all the research and design. So I do the house admin. I think if we had kids, he’d still do what he does, but I’d be the taxi, until it got to late at night pickups and I would do the kid admin - dental appointments, remembering PE kit and homework etc.

I chose well.

@MyrtleLion You chose excellently. May you have a wonderful holiday together.

You did very well, Myrtle. Brilliantly, in fact.

DH isn't bad at pulling his weight (cooking, DIY, lawn), but I do the domestic admin (until this tax return 😁- more effing and blinding there today!) He has no idea of my close relationship with the mobile watchman, would have no idea how to order oil or how much, is baffled that I manage to bend Brains and Batshit to my will with almost no shouting, and never has any idea what we have in the larder even though he does at least half of the shopping and a lot of the cooking.

Magpiecomplex · 30/05/2025 17:56

Well, I did eventually find enough focus to do the very dull thing, so I can now look forward to the weekend without it hanging over me. I've rewarded myself with an order for a new nail polish.

Violence (Ships end June)

Violence is the second shade in our Hidden bookshop series and is inspired by the fourth wing. Violence is a blackened violet with a dark and beautiful sparkle!

Maybe that’s what I should get for my toenails… one of them is a ‘blackened violet’ already, sans sparkle, thanks to a nasty stub. HmmThough I’m not sure I particularly want to attract attention to my feet, I’ve not varnished my toenails since 2019

Magpiecomplex · 30/05/2025 18:10

Ooh, ouch, Errol!
I do my toenails in the summer when they're on show and then leave them to recover over the winter. I was amused to realise some years ago that I don't actually feel like myself without painted toenails in the summer.

They don't mention ironing! You can't trust anything you read on the internet these days..
Grin

They certainly don’t look very ironed.

Ooh, lovely!😍

But it says they're not shipping for a few weeks. Better get yourself another lovely polish from somewhere that is. Then this one will be a nice surprise when it turns up at the end of June, & it'll be a reward for something else good you will have done by then.

Today my nails are pale gold with tiny gold sparkles. Sadly, in the absence of a domestic walrus I had to do my own handwashing earlier, so the polish has suffered & will have to be replaced by tomorrow morning or I will not be fit to be seen in Waitrose. (In the winter I found that if I wore a certain jumper & denim skirt combo and no Radley handbag to Waitrose, I got a security man following me around. I tested this with various combos of clothes & handbags, & it was only ever that one that got me followed, multiple times. Weird. Maybe I looked like some known shoplifter?)

Magpiecomplex · 30/05/2025 18:41

Going out without your Radley handbag Android?! Have you no standards, woman?!!! 😱

ifIwerenotanandroid · 30/05/2025 18:45

I know! I'm surprised they didn't arrest me on the spot.😂🛍
