I think this should have its own thread for visibility. The Data Bill is being debated this week and will introduce self ID by the back door unless an amendment is made. Sex Matters has a template letter on this to send to your MP. It will only take a few minutes but it MUST be sent today (Monday 5th) so please make this your Bank Holiday terfing.

URGENT ACTION: email your MP today on the Data Bill - Sex Matters

What’s the problem? The amendment to solve the problem Write to your MP! The Supreme Court has confirmed that “sex” in the Equality Act 2010 means, and has always meant, “biological sex”. The law is clear: single-sex services should operate on the basi...

Done ✔️

Thanks so much to everyone who has spared the time today to do this. Still time to rope in friends and family as well!

The template makes it easy but, as a PP said upthread, an extra couple of minutes spent personalising it will mean it's more likely to be taken seriously.

Looking forward to when we don't have to be on alert for this stuff. But, as another thread is currently discussing, only functioning grown-ups get shit done!

Done, thanks for flagging this

My MP is Layla Moran, so I don't really expect a positive response, but I will write this evening. I have to go out now. I will also be able to state why I am cancelling my membership.

It's worth noting though, that it is best to make your letter as personal as possible - the standard letters copied from a campaigning organisation
template tend not to get much consideration.

This is true. My MP for years has stated that he is there to help his constituents with their direct issues, and therefore he will not take notice of a campaign letter. I think that is fair enough - so do amend the template letter - even if it is with only one personal example.

Pink News are also telling people to write to the MP's, but for the opposite reason of course. They're also going after the Sullivan Review.

"LGBTQ+ data researcher, Kevin Guyan, posted to Bluesky, warning that the amendments should be “opposed” immediately.
In a set of posts, he said that while he believes the bill is “unlikely to go anywhere,” allies should see the amendments as part of a “wider campaign to erase trans people from data systems.”
“Write to your MP and tell them to reject the ‘sex data’ amendment to the Data Bill AND reject the recommendations of the Sullivan Review,” he added. “If adopted by government, the Sullivan recommendations would similarly erase trans people from data systems.”

Notmydaughteryoubitch · 05/05/2025 18:45

Done thank you! My lovely but very deluded on this matter daughter in law was encouraging her friends on Instagram earlier to email their MPs about the trans erasure etc etc....

Hamabeed · 05/05/2025 19:23

Done

AlexandraLeaving · 05/05/2025 19:27

Done, although with only limited hope of it making a difference - my MP is on the Labour front bench, plus I know that it is standard practice on principle not to accept non-government amendments (so I have instead encouraged her to lobby her colleagues to agree to accept the principle behind the amendment and bring forward a government amendment to achieve the same effect) and also unlikely that a substantive amendment would be accepted at Report Stage in the second House (so have made the point that the clarification provided by the Supreme Court has happened since Committee Stage and therefore it is important to take account of that to avoid inadvertently making bad law).

Calyx72 · 05/05/2025 19:39

Done - hope it’s not too late.

CarpeVitam · 05/05/2025 20:14

Done. And thank you, OP.

334bu · 05/05/2025 20:27

Done.

Bluebootsgreenboots · 05/05/2025 20:48

Done x 2!

BigBurrata · 05/05/2025 20:50

Done ✅

PachacutisBadAuntie · 05/05/2025 20:56

I've emailed but mine is Labour and I started by explaining why I didn't vote for him, so his office might just bin it

Bluebootsgreenboots · 05/05/2025 20:57

Here we are again, gettin’ shit done! Not just women either, I sheepishly mentioned to DH that I needed to ‘send a quick email’ before chilling this evening. Turns out he’d already sent his! I didn’t know he knew anything about it - turns out he saw it on another platform and didn’t hesitate.

Gundogday · 05/05/2025 20:58

Yes, I amended my letter as well.

and adding this comment just to bump it up .

PersephoneSmith · 05/05/2025 21:02

I’ve sent it though I remember reading somewhere that MPs just delete correspondence where a template has been used.
unfortunately I haven’t got the time or the expertise to try and write it all in my own words. Plus I’m sure I’ll get a template response.
I used to work with the MP, he’s new, only just elected, do you think that will make a difference?

TeaAndCakeMakeThingsBetter · 05/05/2025 21:04

Done. First time I’ve ever written to him - he’s conservative but a bit useless from what I understand. I used the template though - hopefully it won’t be ignored 😕

dudsville · 05/05/2025 21:15

Thanks op, I've done this now too.

TheAutumnCrow · 05/05/2025 21:18

I've just sent mine. I re-wrote it in my own words and added an additional, personal question; plus a query about the government's plan to avoid incompatibilities in the law.

I know my (Lab) MP reasonably well so I hope it at least gets noted. Plus I used my 'emeritus' title. (Ooh, get me.) But I'm pretty sure I'll get the same old, same old generic and tired response:

Difficult debate
More light, less heat
Tory culture wars
Both sides

But, as pp have said, it's vital that they can't say that nobody contacted them about it.

ScottishSheepie · 05/05/2025 21:20

Done, thanks for sharing.

dudsville · 05/05/2025 21:25

My libdem mp is new, since 2024. I can't find anything on his position re sex and gender. How do you find out?

Fantastic!

CigarettesAndLoveBites · 05/05/2025 21:31

Done. Plus asked his previous stance on TWAW given the SC outcome. He won’t reply cos he’s an attention seeking prick only interested in photo opportunities (guess who?)
