I think this should have its own thread for visibility. The Data Bill is being debated this week and will introduce self ID by the back door unless an amendment is made. Sex Matters has a template letter on this to send to your MP. It will only take a few minutes but it MUST be sent today (Monday 5th) so please make this your Bank Holiday terfing.

URGENT ACTION: email your MP today on the Data Bill - Sex Matters

What’s the problem? The amendment to solve the problem Write to your MP! The Supreme Court has confirmed that “sex” in the Equality Act 2010 means, and has always meant, “biological sex”. The law is clear: single-sex services should operate on the basi...

Given that the For Women Scotland case was an objection to newly created law, if the government fail to create a law that can work coherently with the Supreme Court ruling and the EA, might another case be possible? Not that I want that to be necessary, obviously and it absolutely shouldn’t be, but I guess Sex Matters will announce their next steps when all is clear.

SingleAHF · 07/05/2025 21:30

My MP is about 20 and very very woke. She is quite newly elected, represents labour, is totally pro trans and against women's rights, and has so far ignored every single email I have ever sent her - even though she is under legal obligation to reply to my emails!

moto748e · 07/05/2025 21:55

even though she is under legal obligation to reply to my emails!

You sure about that?

mrshoho · 07/05/2025 22:31

I had no response from my Conservative MP and on checking the vote he is listed as no vote recorded.

Harassedevictee · 07/05/2025 22:38

My MP voted in favour of 21.

Peregrina · 07/05/2025 23:37

^or one’s age, address or professional or educational qualifications, which are not matters where sex or gender is relevant at all.^

I disagree - education and professional qualifications still favour men. So we will still see men who have been given a better education winning out against women who are working with one hand tied behind our backs.

I'm so glad I'm not the only person who spotted the incompatibility of the Data Bill with GDPR. I included that point in my email to my MP, but she's one of the pronouns-in-biography crowd so will undoubtedly ignore me. Can't claim later that she wasn't warned though.

My mp responded today. He said that he voted against it and was glad it was voted down by parliament.
He told me I am transphobic and that the amendment would have had a dangerous effect on the lives of trans people.

moto748e · 08/05/2025 23:08

At least, he responded. And he'll have to live with the decision he's made.

Gundogday · 09/05/2025 08:25

He told you that you’re transphobic! I’d be tempted to write back and ask in what evidence he bases that on.
…. and what about women, actual women!

Still waiting for a response from my mp.

TonerNeedsReplacing · 09/05/2025 09:06

Mine didn’t vote and I can see was away. If sensible they will reply something vague thanking me for my email and how unfortunately they were unable to be there. I haven’t seen them say much on the trans/sex based right debate so expect they want to keep powder dry.

The constituency party was not happy at having a candidate imposed so if sensible they will try to keep party members happy to avoid a trigger ballot at the next election that could deselect them. It happened in a nearby seat last election.

I think you should write back to ask him to clarify those remarks and provide evidence of this accusation. At least you got a reply... I have been ignored

WTF? Are MPs allowed to insult constituents like that?

Thelnebriati · 10/05/2025 10:10

I'm not sure if this is a question for the new thread or not.
There were several clauses in the amendment, did they all fail, or did some pass? One was about AI and copyright, another was about age verification.

If they accused you of being transphobic for raising a concern about the drafting of legislation that could well be a breach of Principles of Public Life (aka the Nolan Principles)
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/the-7-principles-of-public-life/the-7-principles-of-public-life--2

Particularly 1.3 objectivity and 1.7 leadership.

You could send a complaint to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards as the POPL form part of the MP’s Code of Conduct which is under his remit.

Interesting. I don’t know anything about this at all, how do you think it could be a breach of the principles?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 10/05/2025 17:31

PersephoneSmith
Principle 1.3 states
1.3 Objectivity
Holders of public office must act and take decisions impartially, fairly and on merit, using the best evidence and without discrimination or bias.”

Did they act fairly and impartially without discrimination or bias? They can disagree with you but it should be evidence or principle based not knee jerk name calling.

Principle 1.7 states
1.7 Leadership
Holders of public office should exhibit these principles in their own behaviour and treat others with respect. They should actively promote and robustly support the principles and challenge poor behaviour wherever it occurs.”

Did they act uphold the principles with their behaviour and did they treat you with respect?

I think if they have resorted to name calling a constituent who emails them on a genuine concern with draft legislation, a concern shared by some MPs, they have failed to uphold those principles.

BingBongSong · 12/05/2025 06:48

I didn't receive a response from my MP (sent the standard template letter) but she was one of the 97 MPs who voted for the amendment (found the link on Glinner's substack).

I haven't had a response from my MP. He's Lib Dem and it seems they all voted against the amendment.

Not quite so. 16 have no vote recorded.
112 Labour MPs didn't vote and 26 Tories.

Nor did Mr Reform himself, Nigel Farage.

Mr F doesn't seem to bother himself with the business of lawmaking. Much prefers the limelight

Thank you for the links. I can see my MP didn't vote...

moto748e · 12/05/2025 18:48

Zero Labour MPs voted for the Tory amendment, not even Tonia Antoniazzi. I suppose that's a convention.

NotDarkGothicMama · 12/05/2025 18:58

I got a response today from my MP. She's previously been quite GC so I'm a bit puzzled.
