I don’t understand this place sometimes. A lot of GC feminists say trans people deserve to be treated with respect and dignity, but how is referring to trans women as ‘he’ doing that?

Trans woman are biological males.
It’s the law (hallelujah).

Referring to a man as "she" is disrespectful to women.

So why would you advocate for gender neutral?

Why not? It's cubicles in a workplace here. Treats everyone the same and with dignity.

You can treat someone with respect in your day to day actions with them without using compelled language when they are not there. And the recent interim briefing clearly labelled transpeople as the correct biological sex, so the correct pronouns are fine

EweSurname · 26/04/2025 00:08

@PoisedRubyLion

The reason your friend is not allowed in female spaces (should never been allowed but has been misled for the last decade or so) is because he is a man. It is not possible to explain this without pointing out that he is a man, regardless of what gender identity he holds. It’s not unkind to point this out, especially when discussing the issue!

Dd goes to a mixed school with mixed sex toilets. It’s one big room from a door frame (no door) in the corridor. Girls on one side and boys on the other with some unisex toilets available, communal handwashing in the middle. How is that going to work now?

It's not, and rightly so.

But also, wow! Awesome news 😃 Clarity is such a wonderful thing. I too, can hear the wailing and stamping of size 12 feet.

I would advocate the majority are gender neutral with a few separate options to suit a variety of preferences/needs. Many people, for example, have health reasons that mean they need greater privacy/discretion for toiletting needs.

Can I recommend Chapter 2 of Caroline Criado Perez’s Invisible Women book before you decide to try & influence anyone? A bit of background knowledge & understanding of the different needs between men & women, and why even now , women have less provision than we need, even when toilets are designed 50/50 for male/female allotted toilets.

Suggesting to any workplace that they should reduce female only provision to accommodate gender neutral is most likely going to walk them straight into the possibility of indirect discrimination against women. No matter how many women you think would be ‘cool’ about it. It only takes one women to make the case, and she’d be able to sue & win.

But again. If you think you’re knowledge on workplace regulations, equality law & EHRC guidance trumps your HR department - Good luck persuading them to reduce female only provision in favour of mostly gender neutral. 👍

KilkennyCats · 25/04/2025 23:55

I don’t presume any such thing?
But the law is clear, so push away (fruitlessly) 🤷🏻‍♀️

I read "Thankfully, you won’t be paid any attention to" as a presumption.

It’s hardly a presumption when what you’re advocating for is against the law.

I thought issue is with 'exclusively' gender neurtral. I will be advoacting a move to majority gender neutral in my workplace. I am sure there will plenty of test cases in the near future.

PoisedRubyLion · 25/04/2025 23:40

I do understand that is now the law and where she should go, but I can’t get over the discomfort I feel about her going to the mens

There are quite a few apps which will tell you where the nearest unisex toilet is. And there are loads.

A few short years ago, hardly anywhere had baby changing facilities, and women had to navigate their lives based upon where they could change their baby.

Not everyone can get exactly what they want, all the time, everywhere.

Datun · 26/04/2025 00:35

Fatlittlefruits · 25/04/2025 23:43

There will be an increasing trend towards gender neutral toilets. I'm absolutely fine with this and will be pushing for this change at my workplace.

Did you not read the guidance that said unisex toilets could quite easily be discriminatory towards women, who will require a single sex facility?

Exactly this.
And those who are mobility impaired also have to plan carefully, although over time more and more facilities like Changing Spaces are appearing.

Datun · 26/04/2025 00:44

Also, I can't help noticing that far from vociferous assertions that non-binary people are, er, valid, the entire concept seems to have disappeared off the face of the Earth.

amazing what a bit of legal clarity does

I can't quite put my finger on it, but a certain cohort of people seem to think life should get handed to them on a fucking plate

I'm a little surprised they've released it this quickly. I expected a bit more delay and ' making sure we've covered all the issues'.

I think they’re trying to get it out before the GI side’s spin gets too much coverage and traction. Very wise imo.

I know - if only there was a defining characteristic...

In the same way that I don't have to pretend to believe in "insert whatever religion here" with someone with different beliefs to me, I can respect someone and not be coerced into lying.
A trans woman is genetically and phenotypically a man. They can believe what they want. They can even get things added or hacked off. None of that will change the truth.
Perhaps I am being more aggressive than I would ordinarily have been a few years ago. But the TRA venom and violence has been extremely polarising.

All the violence and violent threats have been from one side. The other has been using humour. What was that thing about men being afraid women will laugh at them and women are afraid men will kill them again?

loveyouradvice · 26/04/2025 00:57

WOW WOW WOW

my cheers are echoing across the valleys

I can't believe they have done this so very fast - and so succinctly and clearly! Very astute to launch on a Friday evening too.

Bravo EHCR - astute and simple and brilliant - Just what was needed!

To be honest, I find it very hard to care anymore when they’ve consistently shown so little respect for women or regard for our dignity
