Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

AntiSocial on Radio 4 just after midday today (25 April)

AntiSocial on Radio 4 looks each week at one of the rows in the "Culture Wars". As such, it positions itself as being part of the effort in the BBC to counter "misinformation" and while it does do that, there's clearly a strong secondary mission to promote the BBC's version of "progressive values".

This is the question they're dealing with today: What does the Supreme Court ruling on biological sex mean for the health service?

They've had programmes on about drag queens and other matters and tend to paint gender critical views as being somewhat extreme if not bigoted.

This is not the first time that I have seen trans identified males change their name to a female name as their first name and a female name as their surname. I guess for some, just changing your first name and keeping your old surname just isn't shoving the point that you are now a womanly woman down firmly enough?

That GI website is a proper eye opener.

Keenness to smash the norms appears to extend to refusing to start your name with a capital letter. Yeah, grammar is, like, so oppressive.

A guy at the stables where I ride says he wants to buy a load of young ponies to train and give them "builders' names" like Barry, Steve and Les.

I think I might set up a rival yard and call my ponies Blu, Biff, Fox and Orange.

Oi. biff is lower case, bigot.

Redshoeblueshoe · 25/04/2025 13:46

That picture of Cleo reminds me of Rory Stewart - I wonder if they're twins

Wow. That is a fascinating group of people.

biff is my favourite. They/them/just biff "are passionate about radical queer joy and creating spaces with, for and by young people." Indeed.

I’m always a bit worried about adults who are passionate about young people…

Campinthe50s · 25/04/2025 14:07

I would actually like give a big up to Anti-Social for being one of the few programmes that actually gives a good airing to the gender critical perspective and allows GC women and gender ideologists to debate this whole issue in a calm and reasonable manner. We always come out well when this is allowed to happen. Its why so few places do allow it to happen and why gender ideologues tried for so long not to debate. The bit on anti-social where they get the reporter to go and uncover some facts has also seemed to produce actually facts to me, in the episodes I have heard.

I think Anti-Social must have helped many radio 4 listeners to get a fair perspective of all these issues and I think that is in our favour.

The episode on prisons with Jo Phoenix was epic.

CriticalCondition · 25/04/2025 14:07

There's someone on the GI website who writes policies for Girl Guiding. It would explain a lot.

Efc.

Mmmnotsure · 25/04/2025 14:08

Crossed with @CriticalCondition and remembering with care barbara findlay, the lawyer appearing against Amy Hamm in the Canadian nursing case, often referred to in these parts therefore as BARBARA FINDLAY

I'm surprised there isn't a Chip.

Or a Floppy. Oh wait...

I always assumed this was done so that anyone trying to avoid using a trans identified man's new 'female' name by using his surname instead, still ended up having to use a female sounding name. (Rhys McKinnon - -> Rachel McKinnon - -> Veronica Ivy)

Or am I just cynical........

Edit for format fail

I wonder how 'radical queer joy' differs from standard feelings of joy 😂

You just need to look at their faces (the ones that have faces) to see.

Cleo says trans people are scared of not getting treatment in line with their gender...hmmm

I couldn’t contemplate listening as I genuinely feel the urge to smash the place up when I hear Adam Fleming cutting across the sensible guests and letting the others waffle on unhindered - but this gem has really enraged me.

AS A WOMAN I spent years in agony with endometriosis that wasn’t treated or taken seriously. And this person claims to be scared that his womanly 'gender' won’t be treated properly? How would he like to be given the standard run-around that women get, dismissed and told they don’t have a problem, that their pain is 'normal' and 'not that bad' and 'you’ll just have to put up with it, I’m afraid'? Maybe then Cleo really would have something to whinge about.

HermioneWeasley · 25/04/2025 15:19

I’m listening. As it has gone on Cleo’s voice has become more manly 😁

I wouldn't want them in the same postcode as my kids

Do have a look at the video I shared up there ^

I thought Bev was utterly brilliant - so rational and compassionate.

And the man (Cleo someone or other) saying that trans people hadn't been heard in the case??????

The Scottish government were arguing entirely on behalf of transwomen. They were arguing a case that actually would have stripped transmen of their rights, but hey ho, transmen are only women really.

And did any of them not see the extremists on parade on Saturday? Planning public pee ins, holding placards advocating hanging or burning women.

Just thought - those placards are the most solid bit of evidence that they don't really believe TWAW, because otherwise they'd be advocating hanging/burning transwomen.
