Woman's Hour has slid into the 'daytime tv magazine show' gutter.

FWS are way out of their league.

I also hadn't realised that For Women Scotland was originally literally four women! Interesting that although there has been a lot of coverage of JKR's donation with the implication that they have been completely bankrolled by her, the average is £37 from thousands of women via crowdfunding.

I might get a badge... forwomen.scot/badges/

Just went to the site myself -
"Our apologies, but there have been so many orders in the last few days, we have run out of stock!

We are happy to still take your order, but please be aware there will be a wait of approx 3-4 weeks before we can post it out to you."

MrsOvertonsWindow · 23/04/2025 10:55

Agree with everyone else about what a star Susan is. Such a shame the BBC can't manage to overcome their bias and platform more of these clear sighted and authoritative women - maybe as often as they platform drag queens? 🙄

Although I agree that the contrast between the animated tone of the presenter when moving on to discuss "bad friendships" jarred with her expressionless questions I agree with everyone who's pointed out that this was an excellent interview where Susan was allowed to respond clearly. And it's great to hear a clear and unambiguous woman centred response to the "what about the poor transwomen?" I'm also uneasy about being seen to "tone police" a woman presenter who's done a good professional job.

Rollstar · 23/04/2025 10:35

How fantastic was that??
Susan Smith was excellent. Answered clearly, intelligently and compassionately and in plain language that anyone could understand. Covered so many bases too.

I thought the presenter handled it perfectly. I took it that she was asking these questions in order to let SS to refute them. She asked the questions then stayed quiet and let her answer fully with no interruption whatsoever. I got the impression that she was 100% on our side and asked clever questions so that Susan could put her side across, which she did with ease and eloquence. Especially loved that she gave her space to talk about the women who formed FWS and the background to the case.

GC views given space and time. On Woman’s Hour. At fucking last.

Feeling yet more waves of relief, and gratitude towards FWS and all the other others.
Still can’t quite believe this is all happening.

Please confirm that you weren't paid by the BBC to post this, because I heard a completely different interview!

Have you listened to WH before now? Have you heard the way they celebrate other women who've had a legal battle and won? Have you heard the warmth and palliness in Nuala and Anita's voices and all the 'you're looking lovely' shite when they're interviewing? Jenni Murray would have been celebrating a win for women's rights. Instead this interviewer (her name doesn't seem to be showing on BBC Sounds) read out her questions as if FWR had done something unpleasant.

Listening now...thanks OP.
I don't want to derail but could someone help me out please with wether it should be transwomen or trans women? I can't remember the difference- does the latter act as an adjective suggesting they are a subset of women?

It should be "men". Or "male people" or "males who claim to be women" (MCW) if you're on Mumsnet.

Let me help. It's Men. Say Men Every time to show up the Alice in Wonderland thinking.

For example, Should a man be able to strip search a woman.

BoreOfWhabylon · 23/04/2025 11:01

It sounded to me as if the questions were dubbed in afterwards.

It should be ‘men’

SecretFerret · 23/04/2025 11:07

Cannot remember who came up with the idea but on a thread a few years ago on here, posters were trying to come up with equally demeaning terms as 'uterus haver' etc. the winner for me was 'ball bearings'. Love the wit on here.

TimeForATerf · 23/04/2025 11:10

Can anyone confirm, do I have to wait until tomorrow to listen to this? All I can find on replay is Louise Thompson's interview from yesterday.

Damn!

Once again I’m struck by how much people in general - both men and women - get really uncomfortable/angry/defensive when women say “no”, pushback in any way or simply aren’t deemed to be sufficiently kind.

It’s been hugely evident over this past week since the ruling.

It's utterly bizarre.

If men are getting sad and upset because they can no longer access unconsenting women, the correct response is tough shit. Not, why won't you respect them, ladies? These people are addled.

They don't actually hear what is being said. In their head they've got a completely different scenario to the one that is actually happening. Despite the violent, lunatic thugs running riot across London demanding capitulation, that's not who they see!

And of course, if people genuinely believe that there's no harm in men accessing women without their consent, and they're upset over the ruling, then go talk to the people who assured you it was all fine, and you had every right.

Because it certainly wasn't women. Or the actual law.

I’ve just looked on Wiki to find out more about For Women Scotland-anti-trans my arse! Angry

For Women Scotland (FWS) is a gender-critical feminist[1][2] and anti-trans[3][4][5][6] Scottish campaign group that opposes proposed reforms allowing individuals to change their recorded sex in legal documents by means of self-declaration.[7]

Wikipedia is horrendously captured.

I agree @Rollstar , I thought the interview was fair and SS came across so well. I like Claire Macdonell and the questions she asked were the obvious ones in the context of the SC decision which SS was allowed to answer fully. CM’s tone was neutral I would say, which I didn’t find inappropriate. Well done FWS!

Okay – I may have been a little hasty in my praise! Will listen again as I obviously heard it differently.

No, not a shill for the BBC and yes, I am very familiar with Woman’s Hour. Stopped listening a lot over the last few years though as my blood pressure can’t take it.

Do I wish that WH was celebrating this incredible win for women’s rights? Of course I do. It’s bonkers (and frustrating and infuriating) that they’re not.

However, I think my point still stands that having an interviewer asking the hostile questions (that are circulating everywhere at the moment) and then shutting up, actually gave SS more opportunity to put her point across clearly and emphatically. With a warmer, more supportive interviewer that focused on the celebratory aspects, there may have been less opportunity for her to do so.

zorazora · 23/04/2025 11:27

I found this interview so dispiriting, except it was great to hear Susan Smith. The presenter went straight into "but what are trans women meant to do now?" and what the ruling means for "trans women", "what accommodations can be made for them?". That line of questioning. I couldn't give a flying fuck what these guys do now so long as they keep out of our single sex areas, services and groups like the law says. It's not up to us to make it up to them and figure out alternatives when they've been breaking the law all these years. When were they ever asked how we feel about it? Seriously so annoyed, but still great to hear FWS given airtime.

I forgot about this but will listen later, as I was listening to Nicky Campbell's phone in on 5 Live. From 10-10.30am they were discussing with a panel of MPs the Supreme Court decision and Keir Starmer's reverse ferret and it was by turns infuriating and comedy gold. Lots of mentions of Rosie Duffield too - the Labour guy was an absolute prick, to be honest. My favourite part was when 'Marilyn' called in to ask in a very deep voice which toilet 'she' should use…

I've just been back to listen to that. Crikey Marilyn, all I could hear from that was "Me. Me, me me me me. Poor me, poor marginalised and attacked and defenceless terrified little old me. Doesn't matter where they put me in hospital, I'm scared of everyone! Don't care how women feel, what about meeeeee?"

Shame they couldn't have a woman caller. Nope, just a blokey majority yet again to talk about women!

lcakethereforeIam · 23/04/2025 11:33

The interviewer did sound more like she was conducting an interrogation. The contrast with the second piece was notable.

Brilliant, thank you.

A stupendous answer to it's not safe for these men women's toilets was, well it wasn't safe for gay men in men's toilets, but with a national campaign men accepted it. Let's change the societal attitude and change this too.

'And another space would've been very useful, for people who have opposite sex carers etc. It requires a societal shift in understanding about provision'.

Sensible, grown-up, useful arguments.

I'm finding it a very interesting interview, it's not annoying me

IsabelleSE19 · 23/04/2025 11:39

Actually 'Marilyn' did raise a good point – that it says that he is female on his birth certificate, which is so illustrative of how far the crazy has gone in the actual legal system of this country. If this bullshit is to be genuinely unravelled, that needs to be fully rolled back. That people are allowed to fabricate the information on their legal identity documents is ridiculous. How the hell did we get here (rhetorical!)?
