Maggie Chapman has publicly accused the Supreme Court of transphobia. Any lawyers know if this is contempt of court?

@ArabellaScott
Every time I hear her speak I'm struck by how immature she sounds. Her attitude is that of a petulant teenager, and it's incongruent with the way she looks. It confuses my brain!

She always looks as confused as the words that come out if her mouth.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/04/2025 20:26

She's almost 46. Old enough to know better!

Is that all?!!!!!!

Thank you. The glorious , thoughtful, articulate Naomi Cunningham and then you have Maggie Chapman who I don’t have the vocabulary to adequately describe

TWETMIRF · 23/04/2025 09:34

She's like the toddler that asks for cutted up pear and then throws a wobbly for getting cutted up pear. Her next act is to lie down on the floor screaming while everyone around her ignores the tantrum

TheOtherRaven · 23/04/2025 09:37

There's a lot of cutted up pear heel drumming about at the moment.

Merrymouse · 23/04/2025 10:24

It’s not just that this has nothing to do with green issues, but that it actively undermines their claim to be talking authoritatively about any science related subject - e.g. climate change.

HelenaWaiting · 23/04/2025 10:39

Has anyone asked how green hormone treatments and gender-affirming surgeries actually are? What exactly is the carbon footprint of converting your gay son into a girl?

Oh, that is an excoriating belter of an article, thank you!

Merrymouse · 23/04/2025 14:03

From disastrous net zero policies to their antagonistic stance towards most women on single sex spaces, Holyrood – with some honourable exceptions – is out of touch with huge numbers of voters.

I’m not familiar with SG net zero policies, but climate change science has to be taken on trust because most people don’t experience it as something that tangibly affects their every day lives. It is so damaging for it to be linked to activists like Chapman who seem to live in a fantasy world.

100%!

"In Scotland the far right is like the Loch Ness monster – sightings are regularly claimed but without much supporting evidence"

😆

A useful bogeyman indeed.

ThatPithySheep · 23/04/2025 15:38

What an article! I am glad I now subscribe to the Courier, I don't live in Fife but their courage and journalism deserves support

ArabellaScott · 23/04/2025 15:50

That article from Jim Spence:

'Columnist-podcaster-Broadcaster-former Law Lecturer-and BBC Sport Journo-former Dundee University Rector.'

rebmacesrevda · 23/04/2025 15:51

I often find the local papers take a different slant to the nationals 😁
Such a satisfying read. There's a man who does not fear the Thought Police.

Another hilarious article

Unhinged Malady

Yesterday the Scottish media gave Scottish Greens MSP Maggie Chapman what she’s never willingly given anyone else – a platform on which to make her case.

Particularly impressed by this revelation:

Because Amnesty’s lawyer was Lui Asquith, who identifies as both trans and non-binary.

Thank you very much once again for the share token, @Igneococcus. Love this article.

If Somerville captains Team Pusillanimous, Maggie Chapman skippers Team Idiocy. ...Yet Somerville’s statement returned time and time again to the alleged fears and vulnerability of trans people while never once nodding towards the women the Scottish government wronged. Sex doesn’t matter but feelings do. This is a government prepared to apologise to women executed for the crime of witchcraft centuries ago but that cannot, will not, apologise for redefining “woman” to include biological men today.

Just over a year till the next Scottish Parliament elections. A lot can happen in a year. I'm still hoping the Scottish Greens will be wiped out and the SNP will do very badly. I don't live in Scotland but my Mum does so I'm up there regularly. My country could really do with a competent government. Fingers crossed.

Thank you, that was an absolutely fabulous demolition job. I haven't listened with the sound yet. Will save that up as a post-run treat for later.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/04/2025 08:27

It's very unlikely I'll be up there in the run up to the elections and I don't have a vote anyway. It's also probable that even the SNP and the Scottish Greens recognise that their chances of votes on an island at the heart of the ferry scandal are vestigial, so won't bother. They had an abysmal showing in the last local elections for that very reason. However, if by some miracle I did get a chance to speak to a canvasser, I'd enjoy it.

McAlpine is always worth a read.

'The condemnation of Chapman’s actions has been so universal that I was just going to leave it. But what startled me today was looking at the comments below the line in The National. I never look at comments to see what real people think but it’s useful to see what defences politicians are prompting their supporters to make for them.
And the Green activist position (according to these comments) seems to be ‘how dare a judge think they have the power to clip the wings of a politician elected by the people?’. The idea that politicians are above the law is not meant to feature in ‘progressive’ politics. It is literally Trump stuff.
If I’d said what Chapman said I’d have instantly realised that, even just for cynical strategic reasons, I’d have to walk it back rapidly. Forget morality for a second; just for basic political survival I’d have been knocking together an ‘in the heat of the moment…’ climb down.
But Chapman doesn’t think that is necessary, and neither do her supporters. That is extraordinary. Or it is for me in my profession. It now seems the case that we are all in completely isolated tribes and anything that is fine with the people in our tribe is just fine, no matter what. If you only see ‘your people’ saying ‘good on you’ and ‘the other lot’ calling you names, that proves you’re right.

For Women Scotland received a letter from the Equalities Committee. Their reply is stark.
