Maggie Chapman has publicly accused the Supreme Court of transphobia. Any lawyers know if this is contempt of court?

The Green Party's raison d'etre of net zero, climate change and so on must have transitioned into the women's toilets.

For Women Scotland received a letter from the Equalities Committee. Their reply is stark.

Wow, they don't mess around, do they. Good on them.

The two people sitting behind NC seem to be the same who sat behind her in Sandie Peggie's trial (and I think she once asked in this trial that visitors should not be able to see her monitor & notes).
Are they somehow trailing her and taking notes? These don't seem to be part of her team, just to clarify (because what I wrote above).

Seriestwo · 24/04/2025 22:04

Maggie said biology was bullshit in Dundee too.

Do they have biology degrees at Dundee uni where she’s about to become rector?

She has a degree in zoology and a master in environmental management.
You'd think she knows a little bit about biology.

It makes you wonder if she simply identifies as having them.

SinnerBoy · 25/04/2025 02:01

Datun · 22/04/2025 15:35

she seemed to think individual people could give evidence

Our old chums White and McCloud pretended that that was the case and whined online about how wrong and unfair it was. Wor Maggie's rather hard of thinking, so perhaps we shouldn't blame her for believing that?

Nah, she's a legislator and should know better.

Seriestwo · 25/04/2025 08:07

That’s the problem, her levels of understanding are rhe same as the twitterers. That’s not acceptable

Article lays into Chapman brings out more horror stories:

Maggie Chapman is not worth lowering your standards for. She is a political horror show who would embarrass a parliament more worthy of the name.
In response to the October 7 attack on Israel, she shared a tweet from another X user that read: ‘Don’t let the Western media fool you into thinking it’s terrorism, this is decolonisation.’ October 7 saw Palestinian terrorists slaughter 1,200 Israelis, including children, while also raping women, kidnapping babies, and shooting family pets. Chapman later expressed ‘regret’ that her soft-peddling of the worst single-day massacre of Jews since the Shoah caused ‘significant upset and anger for some’.
She supported a 2022 Scottish Green motion to suspend ties with the Green Party of England and Wales over its supposed ‘transphobic rhetoric and conduct’.
Asked whether the age limit should be lowered to allow eight-year-olds to change their sex legally, she said: ‘I think in principle we should be exploring that.’
When Pam Gosal objected to LGBT Youth Scotland promoting ‘trans ideology’ in primary schools, Chapman said the Tory MSP’s complaint was ‘categorically more of a risk to children’.

STEPHEN DAISLEY: Maggie Chapman is a political horror show

I have spent longer than I care to remember documenting the ineptitudes and inadequacies of the Scottish Parliament.

Vote tomorrow on whether she should be removed from her position on the Equalities committee.

I'd be surprised if this didn't go further and raise questions about her ability to sit as an MSP, really.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/04/2025 09:37

Good, good.

Interesting and moving article from Euan McColm here. He talks about his own childhood experience of fleeing domestic abuse. It goes without saying that Chapman’s politics are nothing like Trump’s - but I understand why Euan draws a parallel. It’s the recklessness.

Pressure building will the SNP and Labour members stand up for the rule of law.

MSPs 'have a duty' to sack Maggie Chapman for Supreme Court rant or risk wrath of women

First Minister John Swinney also said he thought her comments were "wrong".
Asked about Ms Chapman's comments on Friday, Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar said he was "relaxed with people having strong views" but added: "...when we get into the place of attacking the judiciary, attacking law officers, attacking judges, undermining the rule of law and calling people bigoted or racist or sexist based on judgments made on the evidence of the law, I think that takes us down a very, very dangerous route."

Thank you for that link. That was a very powerful piece.

I have no doubt that Chapman believes herself to be on the side of the angels but the reality is that she’s an enabler of angry men behind verbal and physical attacks on women who reject the idea someone may change their sex. To Maggie Chapman and other privileged politicians and campaigners, the problems of others are to be viewed in the abstract and solutions are to be found in the strict ideologies to which they subscribe. These powerful people simply cannot, I believe, conceive of dangerous circumstances from which they could not extricate themselves. Their support for the dismantling of women’s rights and their contempt for the principles of safeguarding are fomented in a bubble of back-slapping do-goodery, where to question their beliefs if to be a hateful bigot. To a colossal ego, add the failure of both imagination and compassion and you’ve got yourself a Maggie Chapman. And you may keep her.

Seriestwo · 28/04/2025 14:37

I am very concerned about the intellectual resources of some MSPs, but I think I am more concerned about how hard it is to get rid of a list MSP.

i suspect Maggie might be tricky to be rid of.

Can they de-list her at election time? MPs (MSPs) can't be sacked, there has to be a vote, with 10 of the constituency going for a by election and I think that's only if there's been a criminal conviction.

Seriestwo · 29/04/2025 01:01

the committee meeting is tomorrow. I hope it’s streamed.

So many of these guidelines presuppose integrity, honour, dignity and some semblance of an intention to uphold Nolan principles.

https://www.scotsman.com/news/politics/power-to-sack-msps-through-recall-petition-needed-in-wake-of-michael-matheson-row-ian-blackford-says-4658100

'In Westminster, recall petitions allow voters to remove elected officials in certain circumstances. Former SNP MP Margaret Ferrier ultimately lost her Rutherglen and Hamilton seat in a by-election in October last year after a recall petition was triggered, linked to her 30-day suspension for making a trip to Westminster in breach of Covid regulations.'

'the ability to sack MSPs through a recall petition is “highly desirable” with Scottish Parliament governance in urgent need of reform, Ian Blackford has claimed.'
