Fuck sake is this ever going to be over?

Please tell me this is bollocks to hold Starmer's feet to the fire, somebody?

Remember when the Guardian, in recent times (2023 in fact) had to issue an apology for it's antiemetic cartoon?

SionnachRuadh · 20/04/2025 10:12

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 20/04/2025 10:07

But they managed to undermine women’s rights before by acting in the shadows. That’s why I’m so pleased the DM is drawing attention to this new, nascent conspiracy, although I do (of course) understand that they’re doing it because watching Labour step on their own rake suits a Tory leaning paper down to the ground

Yeah, the problem now is going to be the Blob. So the EHRC needs to get new guidance out while Baroness Falkner is still there (especially if there's anything to the rumours that Harriet Harman is being lined up to replace her) and the relevant ministers need to get behind implementing that guidance in public authorities.

Pat McFadden will probably be the key man in that situation, the same way Streeting has been for backing up Cass. I'd like an interviewer to put him on the spot.

frenchnoodle · 20/04/2025 10:14

Remember when the Guardian staff bullied Suzanne Moore so much she had to quit because of her views?

Signalbox · 20/04/2025 10:16

Could they do something by way of a private member’s bill like they have with assisted suicide so they can pretend it’s not Labour policy?

TheOtherRaven · 20/04/2025 10:16

I'd think the hope is that the Baroness will get out the guidance in her time, the left looney establishment will throw a collective tantrum, she'll be replaced with their chosen puppet, and the guidance will be re written to make sure the only women who matter are the male ones.

And hello Reform, everybody strap in.

misscockerspaniel · 20/04/2025 10:21

Interesting thread and a few new names. Surely anyone who is GC knows that the Mail threw its weight behind the issue some years ago, and that it has been a consistent and reliable source of support. The Guardian, on the other hand, and as for the BBC....

WarriorN · 20/04/2025 10:22

Nominative · 20/04/2025 07:43

Naivety lies in accepting what the Mail says without reservation. I do know that most other serious news sources believe considerably more in checking their facts.

this is a ridiculous argument.

There’s no way the DM or any other paper would print leaked WhatsApp messages unless completely true.

what may have happened is they’re taken out of context, or other messages excluded, and a story exaggerated, but the messages in question are pretty clear on their stance.

KS is going to do bugger all as this is what he’s been waiting for, legally. These MPs may be allowed to moan in a corner as they’ll keep a few Labour lefties happy.

I’m more interested in the Kemi/ Bridget part of the story; could that be a resignation trigger?

Remember when the Guardian, in recent times (2023 in fact) had to issue an apology for it's antiemetic cartoon?

I remember the very recent time when the guardian published a story about a poor transwomen who wasn't put in a women's prison. The transwomen had been sentenced for burglary, what the guardian didn't tell its readers was the transwomen in question was breaking into women's homes, stealing their underwear and the underwear of teenage girls, to engage is sexual acts. They also failed to report on his convictions for voyeurism and violence.

frenchnoodle · 20/04/2025 10:23

The Guardian "founded by money from the slave trade"

But at least it's not the Mail, eh?

No I missed that one, but it doesn't suprise me.

Floisme · 20/04/2025 10:26

Of course The Mail has an agenda in publishing this story but that doesn’t make the story incorrect. Knowing what I do about the Labour Party, the report sounds entirely plausible to me, and I very much doubt the Mail would have risked naming names if they hadn’t been entirely confident.

I don’t have much time for Starmer but on occasions - and this is one of them - I’m quietly relieved he’s in charge because, whatever his personal views (which I don’t know by the way) I can’t see him sticking his neck out and pushing for a change of law.

What I can picture taking shape and growing more formidable is the movement to oust him and replace him with…. Ooh I don’t know - a deputy leader who also happens to be a woman? I think I’ve already seen the Guardian (who of course have an agenda too) running stories about Starmer’s problem with women, and with an implicit message that the next leader must be female.

JohnTheRevelator · 20/04/2025 10:26

Well there's a surprise.

Pluvia · 20/04/2025 10:27

The guidance has to fit with the law as per the ruling from the Supreme Court. The EHRC has effectively had a finger wagged at it for not interpreting the law correctly for years (thanks to the Stonewall acolytes who ran it prior to Baroness Falkner's appointment). I understand GC people are concerned and angry about what's happening, but I don't think hyperbole is helping.

fromorbit · 20/04/2025 10:27

SionnachRuadh · 20/04/2025 09:22

So as far as I can tell this is the MPs who you would expect to throw a fit over the SC ruling. Unfortunately there are lots of them in Labour.

On the other hand, Shabana Mahmood is strongly pro women, Wes Streeting has decided that it's in his interest to be strongly pro women, ditto Anas Sarwar though his rewriting of history is annoying. Reverse ferreting from Bridget Phillipson who I see as a weathervane.

I don't believe Morgan McSweeney gives a fuck about women - his part of the Labour apparatus has always been a boys' club - but he's obsessed with the possibility of Labour MPs playing student union politics with unpopular issues and gifting votes to Reform. Therefore he just wants this to go away.

And absolute silence from the leader as usual. Perhaps we need Tony Blair to make a speech so Starmer can quote it.

I might have missed it, but I don't think I've seen anything from Rayner. She's been one of the most vocal TRAs in Labour, but she also very much wants to be PM.

Good summary of what is going on.

Though I would say with McSweeney his position this is all very stupid and a vote loser is exactly the type of thing to win over other male politicians.

As you say Rayner's silence is very telling in recent times. She is the only figure with a big enough power base to push Labour in a more TA direction and she seems to be losing faith.

As I said in another thread I think it is significant that Sadiq Khan has said nothing.

His X account is full of other recent events in Trafalgar Square like on Good Friday. The TA demo he ignored. I think he might be thinking of following Anas Sarwar. The reversing ferrets maybe on their way.

On his X account Khan has marked Transgender day of visibility every year. This year on March 31st nothing. In fact no deep tweets about trans stuff since March 2024 before that there were loads of pro trans statements.

Beep Beep This ferret is reversing.

In my Cassandra way, I regard the forecast that you dismiss to be plausible rather than hyperbolic.
Reform was 2nd to Labour in a high number of seats. It wouldn’t take much.

WarriorN · 20/04/2025 10:39

Signalbox · 20/04/2025 09:21

A trans row could be deeply harmful to labour. You just have to look at the Greens and the SNP to see how divisive it is. I wonder what percentage of their MPs think TWAW?

I can’t help wondering if KS is happy for these MPs to be whipped into line via the papers and public humiliation. So he doesn’t have to

Deafnotdumb · 20/04/2025 10:42

Theeyeballsinthesky · 20/04/2025 09:56

And I bet he wishes he hadn’t as people are quite rightly asking him to clarify what he meant when he said he agreed with steve race’s comment that what baroness falkener said about TW not using women’s single sex spaces was appalling

So in other words, the chat exists and some of it is right?

I'm well aware of the Daily Mail's penchant for hyperbole, but if Bryant wants to kill this story, his best bet would be to release the whole chat showing exactly what was said.

Denials and cover-ups will keep the story running for longer than being a massive plonker.

As for Bandeoch and the Tory party, the best thing they can ask at the PMs is "Will thr Government respect through Supreme Court judgement and clarify guidance in hospitals, schools, prisons and refuges regarding single-sex spaces?"

It's so basic. We want our privacy and dignity back (50% of the population!).

Stonewall can campaign for third spaces and trans support refuges. It can even campaign for trans health care that meets the same research quality and standards as the rest of the population; they are not guinea pigs! I would happily get behind that. But what I am seeing is cowardice and narcissistic outrage.

Oooooh! Sorry DM reading typo police officer.

Remember when the Guardian paid a lot of money to publish Hitler's diaries...

And it was all wasted because they were fake.

We could be here all day if we talk about terrible fact checking.

That was the Sunday Times. But it could happen to any paper I suppose. The diaries fooled an eminent historian. Trevor- Roper?

Thank you for this summary. Good to have the comparison on then and now. Makes the silence less worrying… not totally reassuring but less worrying

WarriorN · 20/04/2025 10:47

That would be the right thing for Badenoch to do, for the right reasons.

unfortunately I think she’s having too much fun trying to poke holes in Labour.

reform are courting this issue to win over more women. It’s an easy win for KS. Say nothing and let the courts wrestle with these annoying details so he doesn’t have to.

So this is the usual shoot the messenger, not the message type argument. "It's the Mail, so I don't need to believe it".

Chris Byrant hasn't denied the messages, just denied the Mail's framing of them.

Someone in that Labour LGBT+ group isn't happy, perhaps they support trans rights but knows that it's not popular and using it to get rid of rivals, or sees trans rights as a threat to LGB.

What I've seen from Labour this week is their over-estimation at how many voters are trans or trans supporters. It's not a vote winner.
