Her links to PIE betray her utter lack of judgment and inability to scrutinise a cause. If you read an account of that period, PIE tried to align itself with a sympathetic organisation and they were seen as a marginalised community without much brain engagement. These are not the actions of a serious politician and I really hope she does get a going over by the press if she advances in the EHRC leadership contest.
Where are her fellow podcasters on the GC spectrum? I seem to remember Beth Rigby did a corker of an interview with the former head of Stonewall. Has Ruth stayed out of the ring?

See the thing is this: not that long ago I had no idea about her connection to PIE. I had no idea what PIE was. I was revolted by her the minute I found this out. I am certain that there a lot of people out there who (a) currently don’t know, like I didn’t, and (b) would have a similar sense of revulsion if they did.

Can we take out a billboard or twelve?

THIS ^^

All the veterans here underestimate how damning this is for us newbies. When it first came out it was bad certainly but in a post 16th April context with mass peaking happening I think it might be more potent?

Technically parliament are above the Supreme Court in that the SC simply interpret the laws passed, including the intended effect which came up repeatedly in the judgement. But while the government technically could rip up judgement by rewriting the laws like the Tories were renowned for, only hardy fools would go against the strength of public opinion.

There may be an opportunity to clarify rights for transsexuals who have medically transitioned but that has to work alongside the hard won rights of women, not cut across them.

The way it will work is, the job will be open for applications, there will be interviews with a panel, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (Pat McFadden) will decide on his preferred candidate, and the PM will have to agree.

Because this is a significant appointment that's supposed to be independent and hold the government to account, there will be a pre-appointment hearing with the Women and Equalities Committee where the preferred candidate will be questioned on their fitness for the job.

As I see it, if Harman applies she would on the face of it be a very credible candidate. So what it will come down to is either there's a stronger candidate or Pat McFadden and/or No10 spads decide she's too controversial a proposition.

So it might be best to game out what happens if she does get it. And there I think she might be constrained. She might fudge guidance, but actually going against the SC would be highly risky for her.

The trans advocacy podcast "WhatTheTrans" posted a while back that the job was Harman's but she pulled out last minute. Their bluesky post is now deleted.

I have no reason to disbelieve them as they seem to be pally with the TRAs from the EHRC.

Note that Baroness Kishwer was expected to be let go and was suddenly given a 1 year contract extension at the last minute which fits in with the idea that Labour's preferred candidate pulled out at the last minute.

Timing always matters when it comes to politics.

PIE may not have been a concern a few year ago, but this doesn't mean it's not a concern now.

WorriedMutha · 21/04/2025 19:19

I think this is why Baroness Kishwer is pressing for guidance to be available as a matter of urgency. She wants to close down the vacuum.
