Fuck sake is this ever going to be over?

Please tell me this is bollocks to hold Starmer's feet to the fire, somebody?

All four of them are gay, lesbian or 'a member of the LGBTQ+' community.

Bryant and Eagle are Stonewall's puppets. Guessing the other two are having strings pulled too.

There's a new GC LGB group called Labour LGB who will be onto this. https://labourlist.org/2025/02/labour-lgb-splinter-group-trans-rights/
They only started up a couple of months ago (it's a major thing in the Labour Party, starting a group without the mandatory T) and they have yet to get their website up and running, but they're... well, shall we say they're the right people in the right place at the right time.

This is a really positive development.

”No LGB without the T” is the next colonising, rights-stealing slogan that needs to be demolished now that “TWAW” has been acknowledged to be biologically and legally incorrect.

So this is the usual shoot the messenger, not the message type argument. "It's the Mail, so I don't need to believe it".

Chris Byrant hasn't denied the messages, just denied the Mail's framing of them.

Someone in that Labour LGBT+ group isn't happy, perhaps they support trans rights but knows that it's not popular and using it to get rid of rivals, or sees trans rights as a threat to LGB.

What I've seen from Labour this week is their over-estimation at how many voters are trans or trans supporters. It's not a vote winner.

My money’s on Wes Streeting as the source of the leak. He’s done a 180 on trans ideology, is likely to be in this group as he’s gay, and has ambitions to be PM.

Signalbox · 20/04/2025 11:24

Has he said what he did mean yet? Or is he still trying to think up something that doesn’t sound completely ludicrous?

You honestly believe this whole article is made up fiction? Quoted WhatsApp messages with names?
Don’t you think that would expose the paper to a potential libel case from each person named?

You may not like the DM but I’m pretty sure they have a legal department which ensures they don’t make themselves vulnerable to court cases in this way.

No what I’m saying is this is not the threat you’re all making out (hoping?) it is, WhatsApp messages from a few mps is hardly the smoking gun that means Labour, as a party, are likely to challenge the ruling, the Mail (like every paper) just knows how to push its readers buttons, in this case trans ruling + Labour bad. As I said mumsnet has lost it over this a lot of it now feels like seeking out new things to get angry about without much critical thinking. Be like Jk, it’s time to have a cigar.

Exactly.

Having now seen the messages they could just be referring to Ms Falkner coming over as dismissive rather than a comment on the Supreme Court. Although they probably don't like the judgement either.

A few backbench Whats App do not a rebellion make! It is quite normal for MPs not to agree with everything their own government does , and probably not even desirable that they should.

JasmineAllen · 20/04/2025 11:46

PronounssheRa · 20/04/2025 10:23

I remember the very recent time when the guardian published a story about a poor transwomen who wasn't put in a women's prison. The transwomen had been sentenced for burglary, what the guardian didn't tell its readers was the transwomen in question was breaking into women's homes, stealing their underwear and the underwear of teenage girls, to engage is sexual acts. They also failed to report on his convictions for voyeurism and violence.

Appalling but not sadly surprising behaviour by the Graun.

Except Eagle is Minister of State for the Home Office so presumably oversight of policing, public safety etc. For her to be involved in anyway with challenging the Supreme Court decision or attempting to undermine the head of the EHRC is quite significant.

Floisme · 20/04/2025 11:50

I agree that the current leadership are unlikely to go along with this. But given what we know about a number of Labour MPs (some of them senior figures) and their part in the trans / women’s rights debate, I think it’s realistic to expect significant pushback. I also believe they’ll be prepared to play the long game and that they might well be looking to the next leadership contest (inevitable at some point) as their next big opportunity. I think it would be foolish to ignore them.

PronounssheRa · 20/04/2025 11:57

Chris Bryant is only objecting to the words in brackets presumably in the steve Race section. Read the whole exchange, ignore the bit in the brackets and its clear they are going after the EHRC and its chair.

Baroness Falkner has already had attempts to take her out of her position. Fortunately KB stopped that.

So bad. I’d be wary of these Labour TA aligned MPs too.

Personally I hear what you're saying and I agree. There is no point looking for things to get angry about.

However, it is always disappointing to discover elected representatives are working against what the majority of their constituents believe so I can understand why some people are upset.

Also, has KS made any announcement yet in regards to the SC ruling, or did I miss it?

Yes. Why is what she said appalling?

Anyone want to back Labour MPs on that. I think they are appalling if that’s how they react.

Possibly, but Bryant and Eagle are beneath him in government and aren't threats (as far as I'm aware to him), I'm think of some junior minister/new MP who is ambitious and wants them out of the way.

Streeting is more likely to give subtle hints at disagreeing with Starmer (his true rival). I expect him to use stronger terms like "Women are adult human females", whereas Starmer has struggled with that.

MarieDeGournay · 20/04/2025 12:04

I'm not going to get into the DM good/bad thing, I'm not in the UK and we have our own media to argue about.

I'd rather comment on the big picture: that there is a movement to subvert the SC ruling in some way - I've heard so many TRAs talking about 'having to find some way to get around this' and so many comments like 'We have to do something for the trans community' - and of course the 'literal genocide' slogans at the recent demonstrations.

Then there's the suggestion that there's no choice but to go on a massive building programme of 'third space gender neutral facilities', instead of people just using the existing facilities designated for them by sex.

Or, as I keep warning, accessible facilities being re-badged as gender neutral toilets - watch out, disabled people - we can't continue co-opting women's spaces, so we're coming after yours now..

There is a backlash going on, and it may find support amongst MPs, even government MPs, and it's good to be prepared for that, whatever the source of leaks/rumours/whatever.

Chersfrozenface · 20/04/2025 12:06

Reform are slightly ahead of Labour in polling in Rhondda and Ogmore.

Still, I expect Chris Bryant would rather lose his seat than abandon his completely batshit beliefs.

I will bet money that Reform sweep the Valleys in next year's Senedd election. Welsh Labour to me are looking very much like Scottish Labour circa 10 years ago, when everyone outside the party could see the collapse coming.

And it's not like Plaid can complain. They've had plenty of opportunities to take advantage, and at the moment I can't see that they stand for anything other than Labour's least popular policies in Welsh translation.

Some areas have voted Labour for a very long time,
but if they start going to Reform Labour could be in trouble.

Wales and other areas.

I hope you're right. What makes you think he's done a 180? I thought so when he announced the ban on puberty blockers, until I realised it's not actually a ban. Existing patients will still get them, and new patients will be put in the clinical trial. So we'll get some data about these drugs (at last!), but at the expense of children's health. The whole thing is really questionable from an ethical perspective. I'm not convinced WS has switched sides; rather I think he's acting strategically.

More in Common just did a mega poll. Reform would be in power if a vote ran today. How did Labour get it so wrong in a short 8 months.

He met with the Darlington nurses and was clear that women needed spaces based on biological sex, I think? Or was there an element of fudging language there?

He's very ambitious and in a very unsafe seat. I can imagine that he won't want to see any course of action that could lost Labour votes.

Yes!

although to add a subtle twist - if we use NHS Policy as an example - there’s no need for a backlash or any activity whatsoever. No action and inertia is all thats required
