Could we have a thread of interesting podcasts?

Subpar from the FT. Starts with a close but no cigar summary from Robert Shrimsley, who mentions concerns about single sex spaces, but quickly moves on to trans rights being rolled back, and ultimately concludes that concern about trans rights issues is an import from the US. No evidence of understanding of women's concerns about males in our spaces nor of the silencing of women over this issue.

There was one recommended by a male Dr (initially A maybe?) with a mental health background and decades of experience. Looked to give an insight into the thought processes of the TRAs.... I was going to listen later but I've lost it. Does anyone know what I'm on about please? Thought it was on this thread but I'm mistaken.

Dr Az Hakeem. He's brilliant. He's written a couple of books and has lots of videos on YouTube.

My view on AC was compounded when he went on TRIP US (which is excellent), covering for Katty Kay being on holiday and droned on at length about how she had no work ethic because he’d never taken a week off from his podcast. Made a mockery of his supposedly positive platform on mental health. (I also used to work for Stewart and have Views).

I was totally unsurprised by The Newsagents. Lewis Goodall always takes that position. I also find his “it doesn’t affect me” line totally disingenuous. You’re a journalist, understanding the issues from every side is literally your job. There was no “I’m not a steelworker in Scunthorpe” line. I was disappointed in Maitlis, she clearly gets it and is very capable of talking about the subject whatever her views. Speaks volumes that such a strong and prominent woman was still, presumably, self censoring.

“I was disappointed in Maitlis, she clearly gets it and is very capable of talking about the subject whatever her views. Speaks volumes that such a strong and prominent woman was still, presumably, self censoring.”

Shows how powerful the TRA movement has been to bully people into silence. Lewis Goodall is unbearable.

CrustyOldFrump · 23/04/2025 10:02

TRIP completely missing the point again today with focusing solely on toilets. I think AC refering to Jameela Jamal’s take on the issue as insightful is a new low.

DogPawsMud · 23/04/2025 14:25

I usually subscribe to The Rest Is Politics and have been a regular listener for years but having heard their response to the SC ruling I’m now questioning whether I can respect anything they say about anything ever again. I’m no longer subscribing.
Main takeaways:
Misogyny on full show - particularly by Alistair Campbell- he seems disgusted that women drink (champagne) and smoke (cigars). He called a women “mean” for referring to a biological male with male pronouns. I feel like he wanted to use an even more misogynistic term as he seemed particular piqued by women celebrating the result. Alistair also slagged off “women journalists”. He really is a nasty man.
No research - their reactions are informed by anecdotal personal experience. Rory’s friend dispenses puberty blockers. Alistair’s friend has a trans child that he has been on holiday with. His daughter and their mates don’t like the judgments . I’m not even making this up - this is what they referred to themselves and how they defended their views.
No representation - two white men talking about how the SC decision affects other men.

These two men have shown us who they really are.

Thanks for this thread. A lot of new podcasts to check out.

Gareth Roberts wrote a piece on HIGNFY ignoring the judgment-www.spectator.co.uk/article/have-i-got-news-for-you-is-a-sad-unfunny-spectacle/

@DogPawsMud thanks for the heads up, I will not be listening anymore and will unsubscribe.

A very small so far but really good listen every week is Informed Dissent, US podcast with a few people many will be familiar with - Lisa Selin Davis, Ben Appell, Cory Cohn, Eliza Mondegreen and Jamie Reed.

Enjoy the videos and music that you love, upload original content and share it all with friends, family and the world on YouTube.

I was surprised how firmly in support The Two Matts were, I know MD'A has always been pretty GC but they have a very left liberal Remainy audience. He also followed it up with an excellent written piece.

Another thing I noticed is that they were guests this week on "Oh God What Now", the former Remainiacs podcasts - I'd be surprised if they were invited back, as the OGWN lot have gone completely off the deep end because of, well let's just call it the Helen Joyce issue.

Absolutely agree, that's one of my current favourites.

“the Helen Joyce issue”. What a good way of putting it.

Mollyollydolly · 23/04/2025 17:54

I know he's an unmitigated prick but after watching the clips doing the rounds of the latest Rest is Politics today I couldn't loathe Campbell more. What a privileged wanker he is.

And just becomes Labour royalty (the Kinnocks) have a trans child and Campbell's partner and daughter are uber privileged women. What an utter cad he is.

And Stewart calling himself a 'cis man', get in the bin you absolute loon of a man who I used to admire.

Clip below for your bloody pressure .. how a despise these liberal men and women who give not one toss for vulnerable women and kids.
Rant over.

peakedtraybake · 23/04/2025 18:21

Thanks for the clip. My blood pressure is too high to watch the rest of it.

I can agree that the debate has been toxic. But the Supreme Court judgment was not made on the basis of "political heat". Shocking analysis.

TRIP was absolutely awful. Just really poorly informed and argued. And the woman who AC complained about misgendering in the Channel 4 interview was Maya Forstater. I’m surprised he didn’t recognise her or understand her significance.

if you want to hear something (quite mad) from the other side, Tom and Lorenzo urge everyone to shun all Harry Potter related content and boycott JKR.

They’re a gay couple who blog about fashion and pop/celeb culture and I usually enjoy their takes, but they’re very steeped in queer culture and like to talk about “rainbow families”.

Their short discussion is totally focused on Rowling, which is fair enough as pop culture and fandoms is their thing. Among their claims: trans women have been recognised as women in law for about 100 years; JKR has been obsessed with the issue for a decade and spent hundreds of millions on it; they imply (libellously) that she bought the Supreme Court justices.

BBC Scotland did a full Scotcast episode about the judgment. The journalists seemed somewhat confused about the legal aspects.

I couldn't believe it when Rory Stewart said his view has been informed by being friends with someone who runs a gender clinic in the USA and gives out puberty blockers. Listened to it in full now, in some ways he's worse than Campbell.

Xiaoxiong · 23/04/2025 20:32

@LittleBigHead I'm a BARPOD founding primo and have listened since literally the first episode - one of my favourite podcasts out there. I don't always agree with them, or think they haven't fully understood what the implications are of eg self-ID or safeguarding etc. But I don't like echo chambers so I don't mind disagreeing sometimes.

I'm looking forward to their episode on this, I hope it drops soon.

Yes, that shocked me to the core. Said it as if it was such a good thing to do - help children avoid a puberty they don't want. Bloody criminal.

Also, AC saying he formed his opinion having spoken to his daughter and wife.

I'm guessing from their ignorance that's the extent of their research before pontificating on a topic they know nothing about. Arseholes.

SionnachRuadh · 23/04/2025 20:54

I wonder if there are any other issues where AC defers to the opinions of his daughter and wife? Usually he only defers to Tony Blair.

Maybe it's because he sees women's issues as inherently a bit silly and trivial?

Does it occur to them that using drugs to prevent puberty is a recent invention? That access to this kind of medical care depends on privileged circumstances? That unlike treating cataracts or typhoid, in societies where treatment isn’t or wasn’t available there is no evidence of need that replicates the demand in places where it is?

Why would AC think his daughter and wife have particular expertise that negates the need for research?

sandgreen · 24/04/2025 11:39

Private Eye’s P94 admitted choosing to swerve the issue entirely, with a quick passing reference to the ruling and charities getting involved in policy making in discussion of something else.

The last issue came out on the day of the ruling so we’ll have to see what they include next week.

Still nothing from the Economist’s daily news pod.

SionnachRuadh · 24/04/2025 11:54

Private Eye has been becoming quietly more woke in the past few years. I think that's mostly to do with a few of the old guys leaving and younger writers coming in and bringing their fashionable opinions with them.

I still think that, on this, Hislop is either a coward or a misogynist or both, but should he retire - and he's been editor since 1986 - I really doubt that it's going to rediscover its balls. It could easily get worse.

sandgreen · 24/04/2025 12:30

Sure I read someone putting forward Helen Lewis as a potential successor to Ian Hislop, but time will tell.

Had seen her make some posts on X in particular calling out the misogyny of some of the protest placards last week so was expecting more on the podcast. I know she splits opinion here but she has a clear grasp of the issues and explains them well. PE surely can’t avoid it in the next print issue, they could fill Street of Shame, HP Sauce, Hackwatch, In the Back and plenty more for weeks!
