Could we have a thread of interesting podcasts?

Subpar from the FT. Starts with a close but no cigar summary from Robert Shrimsley, who mentions concerns about single sex spaces, but quickly moves on to trans rights being rolled back, and ultimately concludes that concern about trans rights issues is an import from the US. No evidence of understanding of women's concerns about males in our spaces nor of the silencing of women over this issue.

Tom Slater of Spiked!:

"The Terfs have shown everyone the way, you need to be courageous, you need to be committed, you need to fight this on every conceivable front, you need to let those smears and deplatformings bounce off you..."

TRIP will be smug dismissal and sad-face

Two Matts was good, but why haven't they said all this before? And why haven't they had Jo Phoenix, or Kath Stock, or Akua Reindorf or many other experts on this I could name on as guests?

NewsAgents was mostly Lewis Goodall pontificating. He has no skin in the game so he could just shut up for once. He rarely does ...

I'll repeat here what I've said on the Woman's Hour thread:

RedFem.

Listen, subscribe, donate. You'll love Jen Isaakson's and Hannah Berelli's rants. They are wonderful, if chaotic! Berelli did a fascinating analysis of social media and TRA extremism for the LGB Alliance a couple of years ago.

Geoff Norcott What Most People Think is good straightforward lovable blokey common sense on the judgement. I'm just listening to the diuvine Andrew Doyle on the Spiked podcast at the moment.

I'm waiting for the Lesbian Project podcast on the case, but I guess that Julie Bindel and Kath Stock are a bit busy (or very hungover), as well as Andrew Gold's Heretics.

And maybe also from the US heterodox lot: Heterodorx, Meghan Daum, Unspeakable, and maybe Josh Szeps Uncomfortable Conversations in Australia. Szeps did an OK interview with Sall Grover recently - she was fabulous, he didn't quite get it - or was playing Devil's advocate rather clumsily.

I get through a LOT of podcasts when I'm doing my daily walking commute of an hour each way ...

LittleBigHead · 18/04/2025 17:14

But they are so very bad on this issue - so smugly convinced they're right, despite clearly not having bothered their arses to understand the first thing about it - that I'm afraid it rather knocked the scales from my eyes.

Also @teawamutu remember when Stuart opined that under the current Taliban rule, Afghanistan was now a safe country?

I could not believe how thick he is when he said that.

He was chair from 2007-2012. The EA came in in 2010 and the statutory code in 2011 so this all happened on his watch.

Thanks, pencils, and hi !! ❤️

I don't listen to TRIP anymore. They're misogynists both of them and I was a massive Rory Stewart fan. I used to think I was learning from them, but now I just don't trust them on anything because the one subject I know about and could challenge them on they were absolutely and utterly woeful.

but now I just don't trust them on anything because the one subject I know about and could challenge them on they were absolutely and utterly woeful.

this. It's a massive litmus test. When you know as much as we do about this issue, watching men opine about it in ignorance really does make you see them differently.

edited to add a listener's comment: "Stunningly detailed analysis of the Supreme Court ruling & everything leading up to the ruling by Helen Joyce of Sex Matters. Insightful & revealing"

She did a little bit when he said something like “the main danger for women comes from biological men, not trans women” (which is obviously a nonsensical sentence since the one pre-requisite for being a trans woman is that you are a biological man).

It also absolutely infuriated me how he kept saying things like “if you’re trans it means you live as a woman” “if you have a GRC it’s because you want to live as a woman”. Only about once did he add “… or a man” at the end. Listening to it you’d half think trans men didn’t exist. They were completely ignored.

“the main danger for women comes from biological men, not trans women

Infuriating, and not a little stupid.

It's like saying the main danger comes from biological men, not men who are Scorpios.

BettyBooper · 18/04/2025 17:42

The Real Science of Sport podcast has been supporting women's sports for ages and the latest one has an interview with Helen Joyce. A couple of slightly frustrating comments in it, but overall very good.

I loved it, I really did.

But they are so very bad on this issue - so smugly convinced they're right, despite clearly not having bothered their arses to understand the first thing about it - that I'm afraid it rather knocked the scales from my eyes.

If they're arrogantly wrong about this, I wondered, what else are they opining on that they know fuck all about? And why, therefore, would I listen to them? I can hear under-informed male entitlement anywhere.

So I stopped.

TRIP US, on the other hand, is fabulous. And TRIH with Tom and Dom. They all know to listen to women.

My view on AC was compounded when he went on TRIP US (which is excellent), covering for Katty Kay being on holiday and droned on at length about how she had no work ethic because he’d never taken a week off from his podcast. Made a mockery of his supposedly positive platform on mental health. (I also used to work for Stewart and have Views).

I was totally unsurprised by The Newsagents. Lewis Goodall always takes that position. I also find his “it doesn’t affect me” line totally disingenuous. You’re a journalist, understanding the issues from every side is literally your job. There was no “I’m not a steelworker in Scunthorpe” line. I was disappointed in Maitlis, she clearly gets it and is very capable of talking about the subject whatever her views. Speaks volumes that such a strong and prominent woman was still, presumably, self censoring.

TeenToTwenties · 18/04/2025 18:13

Not a podcast, but Radio 4 PM tonight Friday 18th at 5pm had an ex judge (?) saying people are over interpreting the judgement....

I would love to hear more about the basis for your Views...

Serriadh · 18/04/2025 18:33

The NewsAgents also have terminal AmericaBrain which I suspect has affected their thinking in this issue. They do tend to think whatever is happening in America is much more interesting/important than anything here.

In case you missed it

Thanks for this. I actually applauded!! Absofuckinlutely Megyn!

Sausagenbacon · 18/04/2025 18:57

I see that a new episode of trip is out. Would anyone like to be the canary in the mine and listen? I can't face it.

Winterwonders24 · 18/04/2025 19:08

Kind of predictable from what people have sad: on that line, I'd want to try Private Eye but know I'll be disappointed again

Sausagenbacon · 18/04/2025 19:09

I did it (listened to the latest trip).
Not mentioned.
I know it was a q and a episode, but I find it hard to believe that no one asked.

This was linked to on a different thread and Sir Trevor Phillips was very clear.

The Daily T Podcast. From the video descripion: "Plus, they speak to Sir Trevor Phillips, former chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, who helped draft the Equality Act. He calls on the NHS to “stop whining about how difficult it is” and get on with correctly interpreting the law."

Trevor Phillips was excellent - as he always has been - thanks for sharing this - it's well worth listening to

FinallyASunnyDay · 18/04/2025 19:39

I am hoping Helen Lewis on Private Eye p94 podcast covers it properly - and educates the men. Blocked and Reported definitely will - just hope it isn't a primo episode as I don't (yet) subscribe. Also the New Stateman podcast with the peerless Hannah Barnes will almost certainly cover it.... next week should be good!

Gave up on the awful TRIP and the news agents a long time ago.

To give them the benefit of the doubt, I suppose it depends when it’s recorded. And I assume they choose the questions a little while before recording to give them time to research any answers. If it came out Thursday morning, there might not have been enough time.

CheeseChamp · 18/04/2025 20:43

I'm a TRIP fan (not on this issue, wimps) and the q&a this week was im sure recorded the day before the judgement, it takes a couple of days to come out if you aren't a member. I suspect they won't mention it at all next week. Depends how high it is in the news headlines, they will be hoping it is old news by then. They prefer to talk about macro stuff and 51% of the population apparently isn't that big a deal.

I really enjoyed listening to this. Thank you.

CheeseChamp · 18/04/2025 20:47

I will be interested to see how Ed Balls talks about it, they likely will. They will likely talk only in terms of political impact and not personal views to get past the awkwardness that he had a TRA kid. Actually I bet TRIP will approach it in the same way, as if all that matters is how it affects labour, the tories, reform. If anyone is hoping for some self reflection or remorse for their previous attitude or commentary I'm afraid we will all be disappointed.

Violetparis · 18/04/2025 20:55

'The Daily T' podcast also has one with Helen Joyce, think it's the day before the Trevor Philips one. Have only had a chance to listen to the Trevor Philips one which I really enjoyed. He was so right in calling out how we've been let down by people in power. The Geoff Norcott podcast is good too. Lewis Goodall was very annoying on The News Agents, I used to really like him but he's so smug these days.

I've gone off Blocked and Reported a bit since their early days of covering terminally online people who basicslly went mad with woke in the lockdowns. They re trying to be more respectable now and I find them a bit dismissive of the importance of the issues that trans ideology raises.

MaeDuptag · 18/04/2025 23:17

@HesSoBadHesGood thank you for the link - I have to say it was quite lovely to hear the praise heaped on FWS and associated Terfs and highly recommend!
