Politicians respond to the SC judgement

A thread to gather politicians' responses to yesterday's Supreme Court judgement.

  1. Stella Creasy. She's rather unhelpfully posted a pdf, (and turned off replies), so archive below.

Is anyone on bluesky and can do the same from there?

WorriedMutha · 17/04/2025 17:00

I would so love Chapman to start agitating for self ID to come back to the table in Scotland. It would put Swinney on s collision course with Kate Forbes and Labour. It would be such a bun fight. Get the popcorn 🍿 in.

Hamabeed · 17/04/2025 17:06

I have spent a lot of this afternoon having grown up discussions and agreeing that gloating isn’t a good look or helpful. But also… massive cathartic and joyful LOL from me at JKR. Here it is screenshotted just in case you didn’t click on the links above…

This was never an issue in the noughties, before the Tories came in. Well put, Liz Truss supported self ID too (I think, difficult to remember much about her 49 days in power).

I don't remember Liz Truss supporting self-ID. In fact, for all her other faults, as Minister for Women & Equalities, we probably have to thank her for self-ID not being introduced in England and Wales.

'A victory for woman across the United Kingdom and a victory for common sense.'

Edited

Russell Findlay has been very good on this.

Ash Regan, Alba: "For Women Scotland have won their appeal.
Women’s concerns were valid, women’s rights do matter and the Supreme Court have confirmed the law matches biological reality.
Three Scottish mums just humiliated the Scottish Government - exactly as I warned ministers would happen if they didn’t drop this case.
This cannot and must not go without consequences."

'I have found the past 24 hours incredibly difficult. Too many people I know are now afraid of what the Supreme Court judgement will mean for them. We need clarity, and we need to work to ensure their rights will be protected. We must base the solution in compassion.'

This image was used in the press with a winning headline. Loved it.

Waitwhat23 · 17/04/2025 18:35

What I am liking is seeing politicians supporting each other across party lines - Tess White (Conservatives) has replied to Anas Sarwar's revisionist and heavily community noted tweet, pointing out that he needs to apologise to the courageous Carol Mochan and Claire Baker (Scottish Labour) who were heavily punished by their party for going against the whip he imposed.

Waitwhat23 · 17/04/2025 18:36

I've seen this image also which has superimposed JKR's reply to an odious man over that superb image

Apart from the JKR pic this is a really fucking depressing thread (I mean, thanks though, Arabella).

On this basis all Reform have to do to win the next election is for Farage to post a pic of himself grinning with a pint in Union flag socks saying "yeah I know I can't be arsed with all that meeting my constituents shit, but at least I never pretended a bloke is a woman."

We’ve had clarity Christine, do try to keep up 🤦‍♀️

As ever, one the best parts of the great feminist awakening has been alliances forged across political divides.

I'm not so sure tbh.

Note that most of the government have been silent on the issue.

I read that Maggie Chapman piece in the Times. That she thinks now is the time to bring self ID back to the table just absolutely beggars belief! Absolute madness.

ConstructionTime · 17/04/2025 19:56

This user has collated many politician's quotes from the past; for comparison:
https://nitter.poast.org/ripx4nutmeg/status/1442783035389325313#m

(you can see the same on x with the same user name but might have to scroll back a bit)

Some quotes appear downright creepy.

If she talked any more shite the screen would turn brown.

Attack on the Tories about this issue is a sure sign of a flailing Labour/Green/Lib/SNP supporter who needs to distract from the dangerous TWAW bullshit their party championed.

It was the Tory’s who allowed this shit show to happen. They could have stopped it at any point but decided to leave it for a “wedge issue” at the election. They didn’t give a shit about women.

Nadia Whittome

'I share the deep disappointment in today's Supreme Court ruling, and the concerns about what this will mean for trans women going forward. Today and every day, I stand in unwavering solidarity with the trans community. We must never stop fighting for trans rights.'

https://x.com/NadiaWhittomeMP/status/1912466493318513037

https://archive.ph/wip/1uk06

What about the protections for trans men that the ruling confers?

Once again, a case of the invisible women / transmen / actual females

RedToothBrush · 17/04/2025 20:19

ArabellaScott · 17/04/2025 11:12

Zarah Sultana

'Solidarity with trans women after today’s Supreme Court ruling. The rollback of LGBT rights — especially trans rights — is global, bankrolled by billionaires and the far-right. Trans rights are human rights. We must defend the Equality Act and its protections for trans people.'

MN community note

There is no roll back. The law hasn't changed. It's the same as it was yesterday and the day before all the way back to 2010.

Note to self...

The Equality Act 2010 was passed on 8th April. This means the political party in power was Labour.

Thus, we can conclude from this, that Sian Berry of the greens think that the culture war was stated by the left wing and by the Labour Party and NOT by the far right.

That's an interesting perspective there Sian!

Carla Denyer.

https://x.com/carla_denyer/status/1912516964620050507

'I know there are many trans and non-binary people who will be feeling deeply worried today, caught in the midst of a media storm as they try to simply live their lives. To those people, I say: please know that I stand with you - today, tomorrow and always.
@TheGreenParty
continues to support a policy of self-ID to allow trans people to live full lives free from harassment in the gender they know themselves to be. The judge emphasised in his speech that trans people are still protected under the law, but it is for government to now demonstrate how this will be achieved. I will work closely with human rights and LGBTIQA+ groups to understand the consequences of this ruling, and will not hesitate to press for changes in legislation if it is needed to protect the human rights of all.'

https://archive.ph/wip/nMfJj

Paraphrase: I think not being able to access single sex facilities kills people.

My response:

Therefore should we calculate the number of women who have died in the process of being unable to access single sex facilities due to various reasons around self exclusion that might affect a traumatised female sexual assault victim or a woman from a religious minority or any other reason?

What's the body count comparison? Can we have some numbers on the death toll likely for transwomen versus the likely death toll for women please?

John McDonnell

'The fact the court failed to hear the voice of a single trans person may help explain why today’s decision lacked humanity & fairness & instead replaced them with a narrow definition of the Equality Act. There has to be a better & empathetic way forward that respects trans rights'

Oo look some legal illiteracy.

Judges don't consult. Judges examine what the law says and rule based on what the law written by politicians says. They don't get to write the law.

If the law has definitions they have to make sense of them. If the law makes absolutely no sense if interpreted a different way, then that's probably not how the law was written and the intent of the law.
