I'm in the awkward situation where I'm literally buzzing about this outcome, but work with a TW (who I really like and respect, she's an amazing person and so clever), we are both at work today and she had clearly been crying when she came into the kitchen for morning break. I am certain she will have been crying about the ruling. I just left the room as couldn't face having a conversation about it. No idea whether it came up after I left.

As encouraged as I am, I still don't feel comfortable voicing my opinion. It wouldn't go down well in my place of work. So I'm engaging with this wonderful thread instead.

Thank you for all the power and knowledge, mumsnet ❤

I wonder how David Tennant is feeling? I'd love to see his hissy fit.

I have just thanked my carer for being an ally, he says he isn't, he is an accomplice.

Is he trying to blame the farrago that the SNP have created on Westminster? 🤣

He is. As ever

Nothing to see here, you TERFs. No one cares about your causes, you’re just shrill obsessive harridans.

Hmm

How are you feeling now?

Did anyone listen to Jeremy Vine on radio 2? He’s just done a section on this and the tra they had on was ridiculous, apparently 2% of people born are intersex and cannot be sexed at birth and actually it doesn’t matter because how do we actually know what sex people are at birth anyway. JV didn’t really know how to react to that, I’ve always found him on the be kind side but I think that even shocked him as of course we know at birth what sex people are!
all the usual arguments were trotted out, focusing on trans rights and how they are the most at risk in society and ignoring the dangers women live with everyday.
There was one women who called in who was fabulously clear and made so great arguments.

I'm just listening to it now. Strategically, the TRA they had on was a transman, so when she asked if she could get thrown out of the toilets at Euston 'while doing her business at the urinal' it just didn't have the same impact as a bloke's voice asking the same question about being in a women's toilet.

The intersex gotcha was just ridiculous, and the whole segment - all the whataboutery and silly false equivalences - just made me even more profoundly relieved that the Supreme Court has clarified this once and for all.

I’m not a lawyer, but I think you can remind your employers of their responsibilities under the EA. If they allow the individual in question to continue using the women’s toilets, you could claim sex discrimination/ harassment in an employment tribunal. I can recommend a very good barrister if you need one!

Have you been in touch with Sex Matters?

Thank you. I’ve been working away from the office on placement for 6 months, so not sure if he’s still at it - I return next month so if he is I will most definitely contact them. I’ve already had to right one wrong at work by reminding them of the Forstater ruling (they posted on our intranet page that trans women are being ‘refused access to women’s hospital wards’ and how unfair that is!). So trying to choose my battles as sadly my job is our livelihood and it’s a very ‘woke’ workplace.

RedToothBrush · 16/04/2025 11:54

I'm not sure.

The fact it was a unanimous decision perhaps makes it less likely. That suggests they are up against it and are going to have to come up with good grounds to.

I’ve seen Swinney say that he accepts the decision.

They need to throw in the towel now. Sandie's right they are wrong.

No - we need the tribunal to continue and for there to be a judgement. Sandie can't stop/settle - as the application of this supreme court judgement needs to be underlined for the NHS

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 16/04/2025 13:04

Yes, a women should not being doing her business in a urinal, she should use the stall. If I were a man and I walk in and saw someone who was not biological built to use a urinal trying to use one, I complain loudly.

Headlining on R4. Predictably the BBC have rung up one of the TRAs they have on speed dial to do a sad voice on the World at One.
Let them speak. Hopefully there'll then be some sensible analysis from a grown up.

justasking111 · 16/04/2025 13:10

My neighbour was transexual many years ago. She had the big operation, penis removed and inverted in her late fifties. Such a lovely person who lived for her garden, not a mean bone in her body. She would agree with this ruling.

TrainGame · 16/04/2025 13:10

Does this mean when I use the changing room at David Lloyd and there's a man in there dressed as a woman we can ask David Lloyd to remove him?

I'm so fed up of treading on egg shells. Men pretending to be women can be very aggressive and intimidating so of course most women just shut down in that kind of situation and men pretending to be women, take advantage of that non-confrontational aspect of us.

Sandie certainly can stop the tribunal if NHS throw enough money at her, to persuade her to settle. If I were in her shoes, I'd be holding out for a big payout

But, that feels like a hollow victory, as it'll be paid from taxpayer funds. So, a win for her / women generally and I do support that, but I'd be even happier if any settlement was paid by the HR managers personally

I would like to see the UK and Scottish (and Welsh!) governments issue immediate clarification to all government funded organisations, including the police, NHS and councils, anyone that provides services and funding for the public, that they must take immediate action to ensure their policy and practice is in keeping with the law ie reality. This means tackling trans activist cruelty to women head on.

Ie protect SS spaces and facilities, arrest males entering SS spaces eg where women are undressed, review policies and ensure the human rights of women are protected. For the past few years many of them have pretended men are women and in their PSED assessments have said there is no negative impact on women as a sex of lying men are women, even though the evidence has shown that to be untrue.

Welsh Government will need to get their own employment policies in order as well. The BBC FOIs revealed that they are completely captured and giving women's right to single sex spaces away willy nilly, erasing the word 'woman' from policies on maternity and breastfeeding as well. Absolute clowns not to have consulted their internal legal services about this, and if they did the lawyers are even bigger clowns because they clearly hadn't sat down and read the Equality Act and workplace regulations properly. If there are any WG civil servants reading this, I suggest you claim your loos and the word 'woman' back immediately. So angry on your behalf when you had self-proclaimed feminists at the top!

Only if David Lloyd have specifically designated the changing rooms as women's single-sex

Not so sure. If they are called 'women's changing rooms' then the only sex this can mean is the biological kind. This does not need to be an exemption? But if allowing users who are not biological women (in the conventional biology sense) they will need to be called unisex or mixed sex if they continue to allow TIM to use these.

FridaFancy · 16/04/2025 13:16

I’ve already been called a “loud bigot” this morning and been lectured on how it’s men who are a threat to women, not trans women.

I’m honestly too jaded to navigate these conversations any more

AlecTrevelyan006 · 16/04/2025 13:18

Exciting fact about Supreme Court rulings - they are retroactive. Any law cases won on the basis that 'a transperson is the sex they say they are' will now be able to be appealed.

I'm in Wales, it's worrying that they'll rebel. They're so enamoured at the top and squash threaten any opposition.
