Over reach is the word that comes to mind. They should be kicking themselves for driving us here.

RedToothBrush · 16/04/2025 10:46

Who wants to bet that the Darlington Nurses case will not reach court....?

CraftandGlamour · 16/04/2025 10:46

Just found out and came running here to celebrate. I'm so relieved. Sex matters. Reality matters.

I hadn't realised how worried I was until I let out a huge sigh of relief. I was really concerned that we would be told that woman was an umbrella term, covering anyone who felt like being one.

I was very much heartened by the clear statements. Trans people have protection under gender reassignment characteristics. But woman = biological woman, who are protected under sex based characteristics. Anything else would be incoherent under law.

I've got that right, haven't I? I worry about having spent so long caveating everything that I'm over excited about no longer being a hate crime merchant purely for knowing that biological women are a discrete grouping, not an umbrella group.

😍 This.

Skandar · 16/04/2025 10:35

He explained it in the live ruling - basically if someone discriminated against them because they perceive them to be a woman (even though they're a transwoman) they would still be protected by the sex discrimination part.

Ahhh... I see. Thank you. Yes, that makes sense now, same as if someone was incorrectly perceived to be gay, or of a certain ethnicity or religion, etc, and mistreated for that reason.

I want to see the total cost of this to the Scottish taxpayer. I honestly now think devolution has been bad for Scotland - we've got a 1 party muppet state.

It's astonishing how the SNP have effectively killed off the Scottish independence movement by going all in on batshit fringe issues like this.

What are they actually for?

CapabilityBrownsHaHa · 16/04/2025 10:48

So bloody happy about this! Came out of a looonng meeting, expecting the worst, and am grinning like an idiot at my desk! 😀

Thank you a million times to all the brave women who got us here.

myplace · 16/04/2025 10:48

Here we go, woman’s hour!

MelOfTheRoses · 16/04/2025 10:49

It's going to take them a while.............🙄

WinterTrees · 16/04/2025 10:49

Woman's Hour covering it now, Catriona Renton called straight over from BBC TV.

myplace · 16/04/2025 10:49

Long judgment, will take a while to fully work through the implications

Same. Am over the fucking moon with this ruling.

Now they just need to repeal the GRA as this ruling effectively states that the legal fiction it creates (that a man with a piece of paper is a woman) has little to no legal standing…

myplace · 16/04/2025 10:52

Clarifies what the word woman means in the Equality Act.

This will cause fallout for some situations

Isla Bryson in women’s prison despite crime commited a man.

Sandie Peggie

Help people to understand the law …

Distractable · 16/04/2025 10:52

I'm so delighted but I've seen someone suggest that the Scottish Government might now take this to the ECHR. Please tell me this isn't possible....

It will certainly out the brakes on Labour's reforms to it

myplace · 16/04/2025 10:53

Background of FWS, who they are, what they have done.

Sandylittleknees · 16/04/2025 10:54

Ooops, woman’s hour just called the isla ‘he’.

Does the ruling mean that if he a man says he is a woman we can say ‘no you aren’t’?

Well one is that Stonewall and Co who have been flogging advice which is bullshit have just been put firmly out of business. And anyone who continues to push their pseudo legal nonsense could well find themselves in court.

Lots of schools are going to have issues if they've been insisting on breaking single sex exemptions.

PruthePrune · 16/04/2025 10:54

Slightly OT but Glinner is bloody huge!

myplace · 16/04/2025 10:55

Do we need to update the Equality Act?…

They’re for men, particulalry ones who claim to be women.

Talkinpeace · 16/04/2025 10:56

Happy place mark

MarieDeGournay · 16/04/2025 10:56

I've been waiting to see how the Irish Times - very TWAW in the past, reversing a bit recently - covered this.

Firstly, it too them ages to cover it at all; secondly, it somehow found a bucket of cold water in the judgement to pour over us celebrating vipers:
“The terms women and sex in the Equality Act 2010 refer to a biological woman and biological sex, but we counsel against reading this judgment as a triumph for one or more groups in our society at the expense of another – it is not,” said Patrick Hodge, deputy president of the supreme court. - Reuters

We're only celebrating fairness and common sense, and nobody wants anybody to lose the rights they are entitled to:

To women - our rights and no less. To trans people - their rights and no more.

(that's paraphrasing a Canadian men's group's slogan from the 1980s - the past, and Canada were different countries back then)

They could, but they'd be even fucking madder than they appear to have been so far to do so. They've already shelved their GRR Bill.
