Someone remind me of the batshit thing Maggie Chapman said or did previously? It was something bonkers but I can’t recall it.

You're going to.need to narrow it down there have been many.

Catiette · 16/04/2025 11:46

Yes - the "this ruling brings clarity" is either infuriating or sweet to hear, depending on perspective. Er, I though there always was clarity?! Grateful for this, though: "single-sex spaces are protected in law and will always be protected by this government" - in today's unique context, that meaningless old soundbite is forced into having a particular significance & strength.

Iamnotalemming · 16/04/2025 11:31

I'm just watching. Holy shit, I thought HH was going to come out with the Upton 'I am biological, and a woman, so I am a biological woman'.

God help that BBC reporter. You can hear her biting her tongue so hard.

I thought she did a fairly good job of pressing HH to answer although was baffled by the "I don't think it will make any difference" and "I am a woman". The reporter seemed to take this that it was of minimal effect on trans people, but I took it to mean that trans women would simply continue to access single sex spaces until they are physically stopped. Until employer and organisation policies are changed, I imagine that is exactly what will happen...

Statement from Reem Alsalem

I welcome this decision by the @UKSupremeCourt holding that the term "man" "woman" and"sex" in the Equality Act of 2010 refers to biological sex. It represents the triumph of reason and facts based deliberations and the return of common sense.

Congratulations to @ForWomenScot and all their allies that have supported them in their quest to uphold the rights of women to equality and non-discrimination

The ruling is a recognition that the erasure of the ordinary meaning of sex in law and in policies has rendered it impossible to upholding the protection #women, including lesbians on the basis of the characteristic of sex.

Beyond the UK, I hope other jurisdictions are paying attention to this groundbreaking ruling.

I wish I could say that I wasn’t the type of person who gloats but I’ve got the biggest smile on my face at the moment thinking about the response of certain TAs!

NotBadConsidering · 16/04/2025 11:48

TWETMIRF · 16/04/2025 11:38

She doesn't know if she's woman because she hasn't had her chromosomes tested

That was it! Thank you!

And I remember that she also goes by Maggie Personperson. Only on here of course😆

Things keep coming to me that I hope this judgement means I won't see anymore, like the obligatory bloke or two in BBC's lists of notable women. I spent the morning mentally composing a sarcastic email to my MP, honestly fearing that FWS would lose. I'm glad I won't have to send it now.

Talking of BBC lists of notable women. FWS should be at the top of the next one, but i won't hold my breath.

Amen to that! I'm delighted to see this news this morning. I can't RTFT now, but well done you wims! This is brilliant.

TeamKenwood · 16/04/2025 11:49

Congratulations and many, many thanks to FWS. And hugs to everyone on FWR who’s stuck with this for years now.

Although, I fear we’re not out of the woods yet.

littlbrowndog · 16/04/2025 11:50

Has Scottish government spoken yet

as they were told they were wrong

KnottyAuty · 16/04/2025 11:50

PronounssheRa · 16/04/2025 11:34

And it begins
Reacting to the Supreme Court ruling, a UK government spokesperson says: "We have always supported the protection of single-sex spaces based on biological sex."This ruling brings clarity and confidence, for women and service providers such as hospitals, refuges, and sports clubs."Single-sex spaces are protected in law and will always be protected by this government."

To be fair that is exactly what they have said - while doing absolutely nothing about it. I'm rather concerned that we will need to press for change with every organisation and every changing room to make a difference

NotAtMyAge · 16/04/2025 11:50

Keeptoiletssafe · 16/04/2025 11:33

Thank you.

A quick search shows it doesn’t mention toilets. It mentions changing rooms.
Does this mean toilets that say the word women or woman are single sex?

IANAL but common sense would seem to indicate that. I haven' yet had time to look at the text of the judgment.

Do write anyway - they need to be aware how we would like them to act on our behalf

Can’t wait to listen to Shelagh Fogarty LBC (her show is 1 - 4 pm)❤️

My thoughts exactly!

Three leading KCs, my fucking arse.

edited to add I'm pretty certain this is a prime example of an appeal to authority? He must've told everyone they had no chance, and now he's saying it wasn't me that said it was somebody much more important

Ah, but we now have the full weight of the SC behind us when we press. First brick down - the whole wall will soon fall. We just need to keep chipping!

@Iamnotalemming she really was biting her tongue wasn't she? HH was a goady fucker there. The same H. Herbert who posted footage of themselves in a disabled toilet using a dilator following surgery. What a charmer!

I've just come off watching all the coverage, managed to get the main headline of the judgement and then my mum called round, so I've been running behind on catching up! Yaaayyyyy!!! 🎉🎉🎉

I think what HH was saying was that it wouldn't make any difference because TW were going to carry on using women's single sex spaces anyway regardless of what a court says. Basically "try and stop us". Then waffled some complete testerical twaddle, and aggressively challenged the newswoman personally.

But yes, THAT HH, dilator in the bogs. You'd think the beeb could find someone a bit less batshit to talk to. But then operation Let Them Speak is working wonderfully. Think of the viewers coming across that interview!

My favourite thing about this board is that intelligent folk here are already considering next steps and implications. It’s very comforting, like “the adults have got this”.

TheDogsMother · 16/04/2025 11:56

Thank you to FWS. This is amazing news 🎉🎉

Fucking Harriet Harman Single sex spaces for women are important & can exclude trans women but only where necessary

it is necessary to exclude men 100% of the time if the aim is single sex provision Hattie.

Yes!

Everyone crying, relieved, hugging, happy, supportive.

It's not just about the win.

It's about all the fucking women, the love and affection they engender, the solidarity, the determined unification, from every quarter.

Genuinely heady stuff
