I think it's good that she's highlighting the absurdity of people using asexuality as an identity.

The TRAs are very keen to make being asexual part of the LGBTQ umbrella because they know that all the poor kids like Jazz Jennings and Jackie Green who had the misfortunate to be given puberty blockers will never be able to experience sexual pleasure.

If they can just claim that it's no big deal because loads of people are 'ace' then it detracts from the magnitude of horror of everything that was stolen from so many kids. Thousands of young people will never know the joy of feeling sexual desire or sexual fulfillment or the happiness that comes with intimacy or the closeness of the bonds it forges. All of that was taken from them by ideologues.

This is the real tragedy, not the fact that JK Rowling is questioning whether or not a day to celebrate being 'ace' is appropriate.

Yeah, I thought her post about International Asexuality Day was shitty. It isn't a group who are hurting anyone and I didn't feel they deserved being sneered at by someone with JKR's power. She didn't need to say anything. She wasn't protecting women and girls. She was just being mean.

I can see your point if you were talking about actual oppressed people. Not made up ones

NonCrimeHakeIncident · 08/04/2025 16:46

I think part of the issue is that the asexual lobby are glomming onto the gay rights movement. Asexual people have never been prevented from marrying their partners or lost their job because of their sexuality. Has anyone been beaten up on public transport because others thought they were asexual? Why are Stonewall and others campaigning for this? What laws need to change? I think people get pissed off and then ridicule it. I can’t blame them. And I am someone who has wondered if I’m asexual at times btw.

winchfem · 08/04/2025 16:49

I have to admit the original comment about asexuality made me uncomfortable as well- the post she retweeted wasn't claiming asexuals experience systemic oppression, but that doesn't mean asexual people don't experience prejudice, societal pressure, and bullying. As previous posters have said, her comment wasn't protecting women and girls, it was just being nasty. It doesn't come across well to mock a charity-run support line regardless of whether or not you personally think these people require support; clearly some do and there's no reason that support shouldn't be offered.

user9637 · 08/04/2025 16:50

Most Asexuals are probably post menopausal women…. Sooo should we all jump on the band wagon too? 😈

Omg you're right. That's why they are so keen on making an identity out of a lack of sexual desire. That's even more sick and scary than I thought.

I came on to say exactly that! Grin

I think we deserve our own week - we'd win the 'most oppressed' competition, hands down (not pants, obvs, those days are long gone)

Why do I feel convinced that no one gives a rat's ass about any post-menopausal woman, be she straight, gay, bi, ace or anything else? 🤷

cestlaviecherie · 08/04/2025 16:59

Good thing she tried fiction before comedy, because it certainly wouldn't have made her famous the other way round.

fuck, that’s sad

How very poetic of Robert Galbraith to flippantly discuss curing a whole demographics sexuality.

Asexual people are at more risk of people attempting to “cure” them. It’s calling corrective rape and it’s absolutely not something to joke about.

UnhappyAndYouKnowIt · 08/04/2025 17:05

Her wording may not have been ideal but I don't have a problem with mocking an "Asexual day of visibility".

Plenty of people aren't interested in sex for a variety of reasons. Like a previous poster mentioned, many post menopausal women don't want sex. People who take some SSRIs or blood pressure medications have absolutely no interest in sex.

But to make a single characteristic into an identity that requires a day of visibility is kind of wanky. Kind of like when vegans go on about being vegan or people who do cross fit can't shut up about cross fit.

What's next? "Outie navel Day of Visibility"? "Can't pull off a hat day of remembrance"?

user9637 · 08/04/2025 17:06

So, trans = young women who hate being sexualised and older men with a fetish/or closet homosexual

Asexual = kids who transitioned medically and therefore sterilised and older women

what a shit show

UnhappyAndYouKnowIt · 08/04/2025 17:08

If you have some non Stonewall figures relating to corrective rape and exorcism, it would be interesting to see them.

Being asexual isnt “I’ve hit the menopause and can’t be arsed with shagging any more.”

Some people go their entire lives with absolutely no desire, need or want to be sexual in any way. And that’s fine. They don’t need cured or corrected and the quote honestly disgusting responses from a lot of you here is exactly why they do need a day of visibility. Understanding that it’s okay to not want these things and no one - absolutely no one in the world should ever force it upon them. No one should feel the need to have sex just because society says it’s normal. Some people just aren’t wired that way and they remain so throughout their entire lives.

I don’t see why you need to be so offended by people different from you existing.

Some people are asexual, but some are more asexual than others eh?

There are both male and female asexuals of all ages - why do you think it has anything to do with specifically trans kids?

The fact there isn’t a lot of data is exactly why these days are important. When people know it’s safe and normal they can talk about their experiences. You can’t do statistics when people don’t want to be out. People used to talk exactly like this about gay men and women.

The very bottom line of these arguments is that they are deeply unkind and unhelpful.

Rapists rape because they are rapists, not because someone is asexual, lesbian, celibate or for any other reason. Unless you were in a relationship with someone, how would you even know they were asexual?

Is there something difficult to understand about that? Replace Asexual with, dyslexic, able bodied, bisexual, quite literally any difference you like. Humanity is so vast that most things exist on a spectrum and can be experienced differently and to different levels.

The risk is when someone is out as asexual there is an increased risk of them being targeted by someone who thinks they can “fix” them.

There are specific bodies in place to support LGBT+ people and that includes the helping of Asexual people with these experiences and the abuse they receive relating to this orientation. If you refuse to engage and listen to these people that’s your choice but denying their experience is cruel.
