Lesbian mistaken for trans woman in woman's bathroom in Arizona

https://www.advocate.com/news/lesbian-mistaken-transgender-arizona-walmart

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/masculine-looking-cis-woman-confronted-by-cops-in-walmart-restroom-kalaya-morton-demands-justice-video/ar-AA1AdWpn

But I thought people "can always tell"?

It also led to the irony the only males in the bathroom were two male police officers who were notified by a store employee who mistakenly thought a male had entered the woman's toilets.

"In an alarming incident at a Tucson, Arizona Walmart, 19-year-old Kalaya Morton*, a Black cisgender lesbian, was confronted by two male sheriff’s deputies while using the women’s restroom, sparking outrage and a demand for accountability.
Morton, who identifies as masculine-presenting or a “stud,” recounted the humiliating encounter that occurred when a store employee erroneously assumed she was a transgender woman. The saga began innocuously enough: Morton had entered the restroom with her ex-girlfriend, who was kindly handing her a tampon— an act of friendship that, unfortunately, soon spiraled into something far more troubling. In an exclusive interview with The Advocate, Morton detailed her shock when the two deputies barged in, shining flashlights into the restroom stall.

“You have to get out of here. You have to come out. We need to talk to you.” Imagine trying to pee in peace, only to have the police storm in like it’s an episode of Cops: Restroom Edition.
“I’m still using the restroom. I’m sitting down, I’m peeing. What is the issue?,” Morton incredulously told the deputies as she sat there.
Now, while most people hope for a streamlined bathroom experience, Morton was treated more like a suspect than a bathroom user. The deputies apparently needed to crack the case of “Who Looks Like a Man in the Ladies’ Room,” a particularly absurd mystery, if you ask us."

When asked the individual could not answer so they opt to try demean the person who asks the question.

This is exactly right. It's classic TRA stuff. Their arguments are shite and their position is incoherent and indefensible to anyone but raving misogynists.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 06/03/2025 15:27

Right listen up all you babes, we can all sleep tonight knowing we've been suitably educated on how this thing called the internet works, and that if we receive porn it's because we've called a man with cock and balls, a man with cock and balls because, y'know, ALGORITHMS!!!

It's not due to those who hate women talking about women's issues and rights to single sex spaces sending said porn. Absolutely not. It's ALGORITHMS.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 06/03/2025 15:28

I don’t know about anyone else but I’m always totally convinced by people who litter their posts with 😂 especially on what is meant to be ostensibly a serious subject

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/03/2025 15:29

By specifiying a category of men as "non transwoman men", it is an inadvertent admission on the part of that poster that they recognise that TW are a category of men, the "transwoman men".

That poster does fully admit that they are men, they just popped in to scold us for things that have fuck all to do with us.

Literally link or post an example of these TRA accounts pleas that are "sending you" porn. It would be so easy.

Sorry but being corrected on basic social media algorithms by people who don't know how to type in that search box you see at the top of MN is pretty hilarious.

"Twitter's algorithm primarily works by analyzing your past interactions, like what you've liked, retweeted, and replied to, along with what's currently trending and what similar users are engaging with, to then prioritize tweets that it predicts you are most likely to engage with, creating a personalized timeline for you; this includes considering factors like the popularity of a tweet, the accounts you follow, and the content itself.
Key points about Twitter's algorithm:
Personalization:
Your timeline is curated based on your individual engagement history, making it unique to you.
Signal analysis:
The algorithm looks at various "signals" like likes, retweets, replies, and even how quickly a tweet gains traction to determine its relevance to you.
Relevance scoring:
Tweets are assigned a score based on how likely the algorithm predicts you will interact with them.
Trending content:
The algorithm also incorporates trending topics and popular tweets even if they aren't from accounts you directly follow. "

I know they do because health data, including incidents and risks, is what I do for a living.

You can do an FOI to each Trust for their data. It would be gross misconduct for me to share the data I have for where I work.

So the data you have is only for where you work at a Health Trust?
The rest of the country is not in your remit then?
Data for schools would be really useful too.
I am having difficulties understanding how you have data that the police and government bodies do not.
I am having problems because of devolved responsibilities and policies too.

I am working so can only follow this thread occasionally.

Why don't you open a new SM account and see how much your feeds are swamped by this issue as a base level. If I'm wrong you'll still see it everywhere and come across all this porn still won't you?

It might actually be a good experiment, if I wanted to run risk of being sent videos of penis havers misbehaving again. I create a new twitter account and start trying to explain, again, to many people on twitter that no, keeping womens sports single sex does not mean genital inspections for small girls, and no, womens and girls do not want to be flashed by penis havers in their changing rooms. Lets see how long it takes for some idiot to link porn to me under the guise of showing me more dick so I don't have to be afraid of seeing it irl.

But no, I keep under the radar now and block as soon as another cock and balls fill my screen because some idiot thought that that would convince me.

sanluca · 06/03/2025 15:38

Now you are just trolling us. You want us to go to our blocklist, unblock these idiots, go crawling through our interactions with them and post their dick pics because you cannot understand that men will send us dick pics to convince us that they are female as us and are of no risk in our changing rooms and sport teams.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/03/2025 15:38

I mean all of this is a great illustration of the types of people who are pushing the TRA agenda. They don't call Mumsnet a "radicalisation portal" (Munroe Bergdorf) for nothing.

It's a joke referencing how often prominent TERFs share their screenshots and you can see trans porn saved videos saved in their bookmarks.

Again I don't believe you at all that it is TRAs. You all sound so naive about the internet it's almost like you don't understand there are fake / rage baiting accounts. After all these "TRA" accounts serve their exact purpose in perpetuating your world view don't they? Convenient!

I fell foul of some kind of modbot.

There is a blog called "The Violence Of Pornography", and I suspect the link to it triggered the modbot. That blog documents how appallingly women are treated and portrayed in porn, including comparisons to how TW and gay men are portrayed much less abusively.

The owner of that blog probably has a lot of violent porn in her bookmarks. This doesn't mean that she likes it or approves of it. Rather, she is bookmarking her source material for her research into this particular facet of online misogyny.

It's likely that "prominent TERFs" are likewise bookmarking their source material.

You realise that social media algorithms are programmed and trained by men, so reflect male assumptions that someone who clicks on a porn link will want to see more of the same?

It would be a good experiment but you won't try it. You want to stay in your algorithm.

Also, do you guys actually know that you can turn off access to sensitive content on twitter and then you literally won't see any porn again? I assume you don't know that (although twitter does auto hide it at first so you must have rnabled it but...) so yeah just do that and you won't see a dick again 👍🏻

Umm PP said it's regularly linked in feminist threads therefore it shouldn't be a massive issue for you to find any feminist threads on twitter where this happened? As it's so regular?

justteanbiscuits · 06/03/2025 13:13

My point is that no, this isn't what is happening. And creating safe spaces needs more than just banning men from toilets. We need to look at what is needed. All this is leading to it women being abused for looking like they might possibly be a trans woman. It isn't actually protecting women at all. Men won't attack in a toilet with others around. Men will wait till there is a woman alone. Banning men from toilets won't actually change this. Work is needed on making spaces truly safe.

Men will attack in toilets when others are around, if the toilet is private.

When toilets become unisex then toilet design becomes private.

Sorry the "this man has a bookmark to a porn site for source material" is a MASSIVE reach given it's far more likely he's just y'know watching porn.

I don't know which blog you're referring to so I don't think we are taking about the same person at all, as that actually sounds like someone researching porn.

It doesn't matter why the algorithms work that way really, they do is the fact. So if you keep clicking on them, you'll keep seeing them. You don't get to then complain and overblow the issue because you've entrenched yourself in an algorithm. The internet can't read your mind that you are repeatedly clicking on and watching anything you don't like, of course it assumes you like it given you keep engaging. How anyone is even partially online without understanding this, I don't know.

Helpmelosemymind · 06/03/2025 15:49

Given previous fear that people were being "asked to share their SM accounts" it clearly has to be pointed out that if you link to a random thread on twitter here literally no one will know if any of the accounts involved are yours unless you go by the same username.

That blog's operator is a woman.

TERFs are also women because men cannot be feminists. "Prominent TERFs" with trans porn in their bookmarks would be women using it as source material to demonstrate how it reduces women to a set of harmful stereotypes (e.g. "sissy porn") and to demonstrate the role of trans porn in men deciding to fly to Malaga Airport.

It's very male to only consider porn as wank fodder and not to consider it as documentary evidence of men's attitudes towards women. It's therefore not surprising that TW on TwiX wouldn't consider the possibility that such bookmarks could be anything other than "spank bank".

NextRinny · 06/03/2025 15:54

Just do it yourself? Create a new account and take the gc view and see how long it takes you to get abuse porn?

Actually, women absolutely should complain about how the "public square" of the 21st century has been set up in a way that ignores us.

When facial recognition software doesn't recognise Black and Brown people's faces, that's "just how the algorithm works", right? Yet we rightly call that failure out as racist. Calling out how social media algorithms harm women across the board, not just about porn, is no different.
