People with a cervix

This has really annoyed me.

Official documentation from the NHS, aka the national medical professionals, should know that it's ONLY women who have a cervix.

What is this non sentence of all women and people with a cervix?

People with a cervix

I think its because some transmen would refuse smear tests because they don't see themselves as female.

If they are that stupid and narcissistic, that's a risk they take. What they need is psychological help.

SlipDigby · 28/02/2025 19:00

I just had a look. It says "women and people with a cervix" which is arguably even more weird, confusing and inaccurate.

It might as well just say women and women seeing as how only women have a cervix no matter how you identify 🙄

The post I was replying to objected to the previous post which suggested a couple of extra words to make other people comfortable is no skin off anyone's back. The poster then said she was offended as it was dehumanizing. Hence my comment that she couldn't possibly judge if a transgender man feels the same way or if they actually feel more included by this wording which, presumably, is what we would want seeing our strong feelings about sisterhood..

If trans men are men what has 'sisterhood' got to do with them? And if they're woman (spoiler alert, they are) then they're included in the 'women' part and we don't need the part about 'people with a cervix'. QED.

It’s a way of including trans men.

It’s a couple of extra words to make people feel more comfortable.

It’s a good thing.

Absolutely this, people on mumsnet aren’t too kind when it comes to this topic unfortunately.

I am a person with a cervix and it doesn’t make me feel any less of a woman to be referred to as such but the inclusive language could encourage a trans man to get checked and save his life. Sounds like a win to me.

Mrsttcno1 · 28/02/2025 19:19

Absolute madness, my Colposcopy letter & leaflet last year said the same.

Trans men are female. Reducing all female to our SEX ORGANS is never, NEVER a good thing. It is deeply offensive, insulting, and misogynistic. And you KNOW they'd never call males or transwomen prostate havers.

You know they wouldn't.

It's sexist, demeaning, hate-filled, insensitive and misogynist. And anyone who defends this belongs in the 1940s and should be deeply ashamed of themself!

WillIEverBeOk · 28/02/2025 19:23

Catza · 28/02/2025 18:42

Are you transgender? If not, then it's not your place to say.

As FEMALES, it MOST CERTAINLY is our place to say that dehumanising the female sex is wrong.

Sparklybanana · 28/02/2025 19:24

Fuck sake. I'm a bit terfy but I really can't get worked up over this. It doesn't take anything from women but there are some people who don't identify that way and that's fine - as long as it doesn't interfere with womens hard won rights or tries to re assign my identity without my consent. It doesn't do this.

WillIEverBeOk · 28/02/2025 19:25

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 28/02/2025 18:44

How is it dehumanising?

They’ve said ‘people’, not ‘species’.

It’s more offensive to deliberately exclude people.

If you don’t like the letter then throw it away.

They are defining us by our SEX ORGANS. That's why!

No one was excluded for centuries and decades until the last few years by using the terms women/men or male/female.

Strange how we are now, and we are re-ordering society and causing upset, hurt and chaos for a mental illness/social contagion.

WillIEverBeOk · 28/02/2025 19:26

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 28/02/2025 18:50

Women AND trans men.

It’s really no effort to include people.

Trans men are WOMEN. Female.

It's really no effort to use to CORRECT terminology.

WillIEverBeOk · 28/02/2025 19:27

MathsMum3 · 28/02/2025 18:51

For goodness sake! They're just trying to make sure they reach everyone this screening applies to, and therefore doing their job. Completely unreasonable to be annoyed about it.

For goodness sake! They can do that WITHOUT reducing women to our SEX ORGANS. What is wrong with you.

I think anyone holding this much disdain for millions of individuals needs psychiatric help, honestly shocking.

If you don’t agree with their beliefs, that’s fine- it’s the same as anything else but trans people still deserve the same treatment as everyone else, especially access to healthcare.

Catza · 28/02/2025 18:42

Are you transgender? If not, then it's not your place to say.

FFS. Women are allowed an opinion on how women are categorised and referred to.

KnewYearKnewMe · 28/02/2025 19:27

It says 'women, AND people with a cervix'.

I'm fine with that. It's not erasing women, it's recognising that there are also people who no longer identify as one who might need the service.

If it only said 'people with a cervix' I'd have an issue,

WillIEverBeOk · 28/02/2025 19:28

Goinggonegone · 28/02/2025 18:54

In response to another poster, saying "people born female" wouldn't work, as some of us no longer have cervixes.

Even if you have your cervix removed, you are still a female. Chromosomes and DNA don't lie.

You're basically saying a woman who had to have a hysterectomy is 'no longer a woman'.

You're being deeply offensive.

Catza · 28/02/2025 19:28

Nameychangington · 28/02/2025 19:18

Well again, perhaps your perspective is a bit skewed since you are not transgender. What you believe they know and feel and what makes them feel included is largely irrelevant. You can advocate to be called whatever you want to be called and so can they. So maybe saying "women and people with a cervix" satisfies both parties. Is that not acceptable to you?
I am still struggling to see how someone being called "a person" is dehumanizing

TweedCoat · 28/02/2025 19:29

Honestly I'm losing patience with this crap.

Just women / men as anatomically appropriate should suffice.

I do indeed have a cervix, but I've never seen it, and rarely think about it. I am more than a person with a cervix. I all a woman.

WillIEverBeOk · 28/02/2025 19:29

Vannymcvan · 28/02/2025 18:54

YABU. In addition, you're either ignorant or transphobic.

Not wanting women dehumanised and reduced to our SEX ORGANS is not 'ignorant' or 'twwannsphobic'. You are being ignorant, femphobic, dehumanising and insulting.

LaceApplique · 28/02/2025 19:29

I'm with you on this OP. Medicine is based on biological fact and science should never waiver on that.

Exactly this.

The letter/poster is worded to make sure people access potentially life saving screening. It has to be worded in a way that reaches all of those eligible whether you agree with how they identify or not.

WillIEverBeOk · 28/02/2025 19:29

Softpebbles · 28/02/2025 18:55

Actually, just putting it out there that some women don’t have a cervix.

Mine was removed during my hysterectomy!

And did you stop being a woman?

No. I didn't think so.

Please research trans people in history, it isn’t a new thing and in some cultures was widely understood and accepted. I understand your position but it’s worth fully understanding even if your feelings stay the same.

It's a letter relating to cervical screening therefore it does need to refer directly to patients in terms of their cervixes.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 28/02/2025 19:27

FFS. Women are allowed an opinion on how women are categorised and referred to.

Sure. And the image shows clearly stated "women and people with a cervix". So you are called a woman, pretty much so. What you don't get to decide is how a transgender man wants the NHS to refer to them. You don't have the right to decide that at all.
