People with a cervix

This has really annoyed me.

Official documentation from the NHS, aka the national medical professionals, should know that it's ONLY women who have a cervix.

What is this non sentence of all women and people with a cervix?

People with a cervix

It’s a way of including trans men.

It’s a couple of extra words to make people feel more comfortable.

It’s a good thing.

No it's not. It's really dehumanising and offensive.

MiddleAgedDread · 28/02/2025 18:38

It’s horrible and I’ve yet to see anything referred to as “people with a penis” (although I’m sure MN will prove me wrong!)

ExpressCheckout · 28/02/2025 18:40

How about simply replacing the word with 'people born female', then it would include everyone it needs to include.

Are you transgender? If not, then it's not your place to say.

Imagine you have low literacy skills or English is not your first language. What's going to be easier to understand, "people born female" or simply "women"?

How is it dehumanising?

They’ve said ‘people’, not ‘species’.

It’s more offensive to deliberately exclude people.

If you don’t like the letter then throw it away.

WHAT?? You think women don't get a say in how they are referred to by the NHS?

Only women have cervixes. <truefact>

We see you.

Devilsmommy · 28/02/2025 18:49

What a joke. Just in case anyone is in any kind of doubt here you go. Transmen are women so it only needs to say Women. I mean ffs people with a cervix,🙄😒

Women AND trans men.

It’s really no effort to include people.

MathsMum3 · 28/02/2025 18:51

For goodness sake! They're just trying to make sure they reach everyone this screening applies to, and therefore doing their job. Completely unreasonable to be annoyed about it.

MzHz · 28/02/2025 18:53

Catza · 28/02/2025 18:42

As a WOMAN, she has every right to say what she said.

only female bodies have a cervix.

its not THAT hard to comprehend, surely?

Goinggonegone · 28/02/2025 18:54

I think its because some transmen would refuse smear tests because they don't see themselves as female.
In response to another poster, saying "people born female" wouldn't work, as some of us no longer have cervixes.

Vannymcvan · 28/02/2025 18:54

YABU. In addition, you're either ignorant or transphobic.

Softpebbles · 28/02/2025 18:55

Actually, just putting it out there that some women don’t have a cervix.

Mine was removed during my hysterectomy!

Gardeninging · 28/02/2025 18:55

Catza · 28/02/2025 18:42

Women, it's not your place to say if you're offended or not 🙄

Trans, on the other hand, you can be as offensive as you like 👍🏻

The current one does say women though…

Are you implying that a female is not a person? How is calling people people "dehumanizing"? I have announced more than once to my partner "as I am the only person with the uterus around here, I will be making decisions about x,y,z".

TheDogIsMyShadow · 28/02/2025 18:57

Everyone knows that only women have a cervix, some people like to pretend otherwise, but it is just pretend, they know the truth really.

I suppose at least they actually say women, I’ve seen things where it just refers to ‘people with a cervix’, with no mention of women at all. Madness. 🤪

Catza · 28/02/2025 18:58

Sure. But women also includes transgender men (I assume, it is your stance) so do they not get a say now?

This is a myth.

Incognitoburrito88 · 28/02/2025 18:59

This is fine. Some trans men don’t consider themselves to be men anymore and some non binary people don’t consider themselves to be either. They are included under the ‘people with cervixes’ bit and I am there under the ‘woman’ bit. If it only said ‘all people with cervixes’ I’d be slightly upset. As it stands I think it is totally fine. Surely we want as many people as possible to feel included so that our excellent screening program screens as many people as possible and continues to prevent cervical cancer 🤷‍♀️

BananaBubbless · 28/02/2025 18:59

The last two years I’ve had colposcopy appointments ALL of their posters, leaflets etc have said person with a cervix.

At the time I was very scared and thought it was a bit of a kick that we can’t be acknowledged as women.
