Who knew they were funded via the US government? Not me.

Trump aid freeze ‘may force Stonewall to cut up to half of staff’

I would happily donate to support their work with Lesbian and Gay people in Eastern Europe, or in places where LGB people are in danger. But they have wasted political capital, money and time trying to suppress women's rights (including especially those of lesbian women to same sex attraction) and so it is hard to feel much sympathy.

And people wonder why the US tax payer voted for Trump.

Not sure if the share token allows anyone to see the comments but there are some crackers.

Couldn’t happen to a nicer organisation.

Interesting details:

  • they have 114 staff - a lot!
  • the LGBTQ slush fund they received significant sums from was administered by the U.S. State Department, meaning the equivalent of the Foreign Office.
  • last year alone they got 230K from this fund - talk about foreign interference
  • the CEO has some nerve talking about “victims of a political agenda thousands of miles away” - that’s exactly what women and girls in the UK were, in institutions that implemented misogynistic ‘Stonewall Law’!
Codlingmoths · 23/02/2025 22:34

I don’t understand how usaid justifies spending money on a uk charity??

Lovelyview · 23/02/2025 22:35

Every time I see 'LGBTQ+ community' it sets my teeth on edge. (I notice the 'I' for Intersex has escaped the forced teaming). Will Stonewall just grift harder with this loss of funding I wonder. It is a shame they threw out the huge advances in gay rights that they helped achieve by pushing the idea that straight men in dresses were the 'most marginalised' community. The ultimate mission creep.

Papadonut · 23/02/2025 22:35

Thank fuck for this.

AgathaMystery · 23/02/2025 22:36

completely misogynistic organisation with a nebulous grip on reality.

my sympathy levels are zero, as I assume all staff members would have me share a changing room with a male so long as he thinks he’s a woman.

I like this comment from Kate Harris.

Oh no. That’s terrible

WhereYouLeftIt · 23/02/2025 22:44

Oh dear. How sad. Never mind.

I am also gobsmacked at them being funded by USAID.

senua · 23/02/2025 22:45

I know that it's not the point of the article but I find it weird that the US Government gives money to a UK charity who then passes it on to Eastern Europe. It doesn't seem a very efficient way of doing things.

Holeinamole · 23/02/2025 22:45

Yes, good comment but the quotes from the new CEO make me think that there will be no reckoning and it will all be brushed under the carpet.

All of a sudden, the focus is on LGBT in Eastern Europe, probably because that’s less controversial for a British audience, but it is legitimate to ask whether it’s ever a good idea to interfere in other countries. Why should British taxes fund this stuff? I am open to being convinced but I’m really not sure …

Your teeth and my teeth both... er, that didn't come out right, did it?Grin

Don't forget to deploy this: LGB✂T often, it says it all...

I agree with this. They could be doing so much good work in places where gay people are still discriminated against and victimised, and for all I know they are, but it’s all trampled by the Trans Rights Express.

The Stonewall gravy train is coming to an end. Good! It was already in the shit as their fees revenue dropped and will continue to as more companies and institutions distance and drop .their DEI champions bollocks.

I do feel for the poor emotional support animals that may face redundancy though. I hope someone is thinking of them.

Stonewall will hopefully undergo a rebirth of some sort.

Fenlandia · 23/02/2025 23:12

I'm as confused as some of the commenters on the article - 230k from this US fund in most recent annual accounts but might to lose up to half of their 114 staff? Even if it was say only 30-40 staff that's a big chunk of the charity gone?

Oh dear. What a pity. Never mind.

20 years ago if you'd told me this would have been my reaction I'd have not believed you.

They absolutely richly deserve this.

I'm amazed they only have 114 staff.
Well obviously they won't have for much longer

I've heard complaints from Americans about - they'll point out that people are always complaining about Russian interference in the US and elsewhere, but what is the US government funding political causes in other countries then?

In Canada, one of the excuses for freezing the protesting truckers bank accounts was that they were getting money from US donors - and those were private donations, not from the government.

It's why I can't get teary eyed about these government institutions being put on a leash now, even though I think it's probably not the most qualified people handling it. You can't go around spending public funds like that and not expect a backlash.

I think there is a lot of trouble coming generally for the whole NGO lobbying sector.

But...but...I thought the terfs were the ones receiving American money? Although I am still waiting for mine. Don't suppose I'll see it now😢

Curse you, Trump and Elon Musk!

EasternStandard · 23/02/2025 23:34

There must be so much funding like this, it is odd

socialdilemmawhattodo · 23/02/2025 23:39

Well, well, well. Follow the money always. Who would have thought. USA funding of an organisation in the UK. Please remember the US funding of organisations in ireland, both north and south. The USA does like to interfere enormously in other countries legal processes. Without ever a single acknowledgement that is not ok.

Have read the article but can't see where it says the charity are getting money from British taxes?
