GMC appears to have done an almighty reverse here.

They replied to a FoI to say they have no data on sex of the doctors as they record gender instead.

Which is relevant in what way to a patient? Or anybody else except the person themself.

Datun · 23/02/2025 19:41

DBS next

Yes. And that affects a lot more people.

WhamFantastic · 23/02/2025 22:16

It is relevant as they allow self ID gender and not sex.

If a patient requests a female doctor for instance, how can they tell from the medical register if a doctor is female if self ID gender is used?

Agree. It doesn't engender trust in the NHS, which is possibly at an all time low, if a patient is prevented from knowing the biological sex of a doctor to whom they may be relating highly personal information.
It really matters to many women.

shrinkingthiswinter · 23/02/2025 22:19

Why should their past names still be concealed?

Which shows how fucked up all this is. A medical regulator admitting they're unwilling or unable to accurately record sex . On a par with the idiocy of the Office for National Statistics having to be dragged through the courts because they didn't want to record sex on the National Census. They still managed to fuck up the gender identity question demonstrating even greater levels of wilful incompetence.

DBS next

Absolute priority.

This is more good progress though.

SidewaysOtter · 23/02/2025 22:51

🚨 STAND CLEAR, THIS FERRET IS REVERSING 🚨

Why should their past names still be concealed?

Well exactly.

CarolinaWren · 23/02/2025 23:37

ArabellaScott · 23/02/2025 18:41

Yes. Just name.and pronoun will be changed.

"The regulator said any redactions would be “confined to information like pronouns and name prior to transition”."

I don't even agree with this part. The records should be set up so you can easily connect the previous name and the employment history to the doctor's current name and employment. Any other way makes it too easy to hide crimes and wrongdoing.

I hope that ferret didn't get injured reversing so fast?

Yes concern about that ferret is totally justified. Imagine the whiplash injuries.

Heggettypeg · 23/02/2025 23:51

How do they handle the records of women who qualify, then later get married and change their surname? Would they get a new number too?

They do not get a new registration number.

Didactylos · 24/02/2025 05:30

Im glad the GMC have seen some sense but its just another illustration of how Gender identity politics corrupts everything it touches.

Classic Chestertons fence principle - they went in and changed the rules due to lobbying from an interested group emoting how difficult their lives are, invoking human rights legislation, privacy concerns, and didnt stop to consider the purpose of GMC registration and why it is set up the way it is (open access to the public) before subverting it

Didactylos · 24/02/2025 05:31

Legislation to allow a small group in society to lie about reality cannot stand - and all the accommodations that have been made to bend over backwards to accept this lie need to be revoked.

It demonstrates how easily and swiftly things can be sorted.

Which begs the question why the DBS has failed to fix the same issue.

Good news thanks, ArabellaScott!

'Off-ramp'
''Golden bridge
'Reverse weasel'
'Kicking and screaming'
'Turning tide'
Just a few words and phrases I hope we'll be needing more and more in 2025Smile

Weasel rather than ferret? Well, dealers choice 😁👍

RosemaryRabbit · 24/02/2025 08:20

@Radionowhere ... I read your hat tip as "you're welcome". If so... THANK YOU!

ginnybag · 24/02/2025 08:25

It needs to operate like the companies house register, as does DBS etc.

One number - one entity. You can change all the details you like after that but never erase the record of them and never create a new one. To, er, 'borrow' a phrase, it should be a contemporaneous record.

Once a person is registered, that's their number forever regardless of what they do. And the sex should be that on their birth certificate at first reg.

HermioneWeasley · 24/02/2025 08:32

It’s a good start but as others have said, misses the point that sometimes the sex of your doctor matters and they ought to record that. Nobody cares about your gender identity, no need to record that at all and avoid all related issues.

and yes to al, the people pointing out the massive DBS loophole. Suggest anyone able to points this out in the comments and hopes the Telegraph picks up on it.

Edited

NI numbers are changed too so a whole untrackable ID can be created.
New birth cert
New passport
New NI
New education certs (as some women had to match their married name)

NI number is changed?! Fucking WHY????

I mean someone looking at this pathway of creating a whole new identity and wrecking recording systems that are considered generally bulletproof and unmovable might wonder what the actual motivation was, no?!

The GMC have their own governance code of conduct including public protection that might be worth checking against regarding this issue and they are ultimately accountable to parliament.

https://www.gmc-uk.org/about/how-we-work/governance/council/code-of-conduct#:~:text=The%20Council%20is%20accountable%20to,Parliament%20and%20the%20Privy%20Council.

Health ministers need to know directly that problems haven’t been fully solved yet in this case by the (welcome) GMC reverse, so they should be alerted.
And there is also an overseeing regulator to complain to about this. The Professional Standards Authority for health and social care. It may be that doctoring is not the only health professional body that does this awful record keeping. PSA don’t investigate cases individually but they do make recommendations to the government of the day which would be helpful.

a different recent AiBU thread shows how multiple doctors are enabled to continue to practice by GMC after terrible sexual assaults and aggressions on women, there is an ongoing sexual misconduct handling inquiry going on by PSA and that will report to parliament. So it would be good to get PSA to include in that male doctors who want to treat women patients without their consent or by deception, as issues to be acted on by Parliament too, in their inquiry.

Actually it isn't even just DBS. It was equally ridiculous to permit a change of marker on Driving Licenses, passports and other official ID documents. I don't care how people choose to present to British Gas, but I am uncomfortable with passports that contain untruths.

I occasionally provide medical documents for travel and always check that the details I have are the same as on their passports - otherwise the documents may not be accepted. So far, I haven't encountered the scenario of a changed sex marker on a passport, but I sometimes wonder what might happen in conservative countries.
