That's when it lost me! Dr Who is male, every regeneration had been male. Having a female Doctor made no sense but I was prepared to give it a go. God it was dire! I stopped watching then and considering the path they took after that I'm glad I stopped watching.

I don't get this at all.
The Doctor is an alien with two hearts from the planet Gallifrey that can regenerate into any human form.
Why does he have to be male in your head?
He can be female, male, white or black.

FictionalCharacter · 28/01/2025 02:28

Oh. That's it for me then. I enjoyed Gatwa's episodes with Ruby, despite his excessive crying and the tedious shoehorning in of trans, drag artists etc. But I won't be watching anything written by Dawson.
No doubt it will tank and they'll say it's because the audience is transphobic, right wing etc

Why can't he just be male in my head? It's my head.

MaybeNotBob · 28/01/2025 02:29

I don't think making the Doctor female was a good idea. It just didn't work (and wasn't helped by the scripts).

I suspect all the anti-Tenant brigade are JK Rowling fangirls. The best episode of the entire reboot was the "you've got my voice" one where they managed to keep Tate out of it pretty much altogether. It was much more like the old Dr Who, where it was about plot and acting rather than Whizz-bang special effects.

After the episode with Meep asking for pronouns I will never watch it again.

It was so bad. I used to love this show.

LittleMyLittle · 27/01/2025 16:17

It's a win-win either way.

Viewing figures are great = a sign of approval of the show's messaging.

Viewing figures are terrible = just goes to show how right-on and superior they are to everyone else.

There are always two modes - the majority is for us (and we're just waiting for the rest of you to die or educate yourselves), and the majority is against us (we are oppressed and the fight against fascism is hard). If one mode isn't working then the other one is there as a backup.

Gatwa and RTD explicitly told viewers (before S1) that if they weren’t woke then Dr Who wasn’t for them anymore so they should watch something else - it seems a lot of viewers complied with this instruction.

Gatwa also stated that for every non-woke viewer they lost they would gain two woke viewers in replacement - this prediction was incorrect.

Whomanity · 28/01/2025 03:03

Well, let’s be honest, I suspect the vast majority of people who stopped watching NG did so because they didn’t like the look of him, rather than because of anything he said …

For myself, since I first saw him in Sex Education, I’ve found him so effervescently, distractingly beautiful it would have been hard to concentrate on any worthwhile Who plot if there had been one. It’s not his fault that the standout episode of the last season was the one focused on Ruby.

I have wanted to love his era as much as I loved Matt Smith’s. It’s been sad and frustrating to have to give up on that hope purely for reasons completely beyond his control.

BezMills · 28/01/2025 06:31

I loved the tennant episodes on first watch (although the baby gollum jesus three-parter in 2007 was a little bit shark-jumpy ngl). I would say Smith was the best, but the Moffat Plot Twisties got a bit much. I loved Capaldi. I drifted off duing the early part of Jodie's run - I think the writing she was given wasn't great, but I'm totally here for a female doctor, why not? I've watched all the episodes since the re-reboot and will keep watching. It's Doctor Who - I've been watching since I was 3!
We're just at Ep3 of JW, doing a full rewatch with DD (7) who loves everything about Doctor Who.

lunar1 · 28/01/2025 06:32

They lost me at capaldi, but was already on my way out at the end of Smith. I didn't like the assistant at all, ant then her interaction after Peter's regeneration was like nails on a chalkboard.

Sounds like I'm not missing much!

"Most people didn't like his Doctor because they're racists. I however had more intellectual reasons"

It's really not how a public service broadcaster should do things IMO.

Well they had already done it with the master / missy

BezMills · 28/01/2025 07:31

Gomez / Capaldi and Gomez / Simm were absolutely fantastic together.

We're just after watching the tail end of Capaldi's last season which was absolutely Topp Who in my view.

I. WAITED. FOR. YOUUUUUUUU.

Missy was far better than any of the male Masters, even better than John Simm.

Probably my favourite baddie.

I think it's good to have programmes with different different perspectives/core values on a public broadcaster. The issue is that on this particular belief one perspective is held up as "the truth" and anyone who disagrees slandered and silenced.

Munkypuppy · 28/01/2025 07:44

Not a Who fan but thanks for the heads up on dawson. Funny but as I was reading the review of Wonderland I felt it read like those stupid neanderthal sex scenes men write and lo and behold when I googled, Dawson's a biological male. Biological sex is a thing, and it even screams out at you in writing.

Absolutely disgusting this is in schools.

Munkypuppy · 28/01/2025 07:44

Oh, and clearly the beeb have learnt nothing. I await the next scandal from them, sure it won't be long!

JustSpeculation · 28/01/2025 07:45

The problem with Whittaker's doctor was not Jodie Whittaker. It was the dreary predictability of the scripts. I stopped watching mainly because I found myself knowing exactly what each character would say before they said it. Not just predictable, but sententiously, humourlessly predictable.

Codlingmoths · 28/01/2025 07:46

The master/ missy story was well done. I have no issue with a female doctor, pretty ridiculous to say the time travelling physically completely regenerating immortal time lord has always been male- that’s crazy thinking equivalent to the bible says so. I liked the dyspraxic storyline - that was quite a nice inclusion, that was just accept people rather than the you’re the most beautiful kind of girl!!! Rose storyline. And juno Dawson is a terrible choice, average writing skills and never wrote anything without managing to waterboard the reader with the trans women are the realest kind of real women, and that’s before you get to that totally eww age inappropriate stuff they’ve written. The one I read wasn’t sheer disgusting like the stuff linked, but just average writing and packed full of the trans equivalent of hardcore jehovahs witnesses.

PriOn1 · 28/01/2025 08:25

Earlier in the thread, it was suggested that Who needs a rest, then a reboot.

Does anyone know what the terms are with Disney? I presume, before now, it was owned by the BBC, who could pick it up and put it down as they wished. It was always, fundamentally, a British programme.

I am now worried that they have sold it to Disney and therefore the BBC will no longer be able to choose whether to restart it, should it fail this time?

I quite like Ncuti. It all depends on the scripts though. I had great hopes when I saw RTD was returning, but he has made it clear he doesn’t want me as a viewer, which is bigotry from him and pretty sad that he puts politics before art, which rarely makes for good art…

Chersfrozenface · 28/01/2025 08:41

Disney bought the worldwide streaming rights. The exact price isn't known but figures like $100 million have been suggested.

Disney can't cancel or restart Doctor Who, as it's produced by the BBC. However, if Disney pulled out of the deal, would the BBC be able to continue or restart production, financially?

I only saw the first one he did. He looked great, loved his energy.
But the story was silly (hard to remember it tbh) with some sort of musical bit.

See here if you don't know about the pornographic fantasies Dawson markets at twelve-year-olds.

Fucking hell, that's awful.

DrBlackbird · 28/01/2025 08:55

I’m with the Ecclestone fans but some of those episodes were so deeply disturbing that I remember them vividly 20 years later. "Are you my mummy" was definitely hiding behind the sofa material. Brilliant writing.

Not knowing who Juno Dawson is I went and googled this person. Lots of photos came up. Two thoughts struck me. One, this person looked healthier in their original presentation. Two, where would trans women be if women didn’t wear make up? Okay so there’s the wearing dresses. But it’s wearing makeup that lets them pretend to themselves that they genuinely ‘pass’.

Back to DW though as another Ecclestone episode ‘Father’s Day’ was gutting. That earlier reincarnation was altogether darker.
