Those two sentences don’t run logically, @FaithFables.

FaithFables · 27/01/2025 19:03

@Whomanity Why? I stopped watching after Matt Smith left. I tried to watch Peter Capaldi - crap and I tried to watch Jodie Whittaker - crap. Never bothered watching the new fella. Therefore, it's been crap ever since.

Whomanity · 27/01/2025 19:09

This is all making me very sad - I’ve watched since the mid-sixties. Loved Tom Baker, wept with joy when Ncuti Gatwa was announced. Matt Smith somehow became my Doctor - genius portrayal and fabulous storytelling. And being able to pass Dr Who on to the next generation has been one of the highlights of my life.

I don’t see how I can follow where it seems to be leading - though I obviously want to see what the other new writers make of it. Really, really disappointing decision making going on …

YeezysBeans · 27/01/2025 19:22

I've just read the review of his book aimed at teen readers. Thank you for the link. Fucking awful! 🤢😡

bifurCAT · 27/01/2025 19:27

I consider anything after Capaldi as non-canon.

It's like they're purposely trying to turn people off.

Chersfrozenface · 27/01/2025 19:29

It's like they're purposely trying to turn people off.

Judging by the viewing figures, that's going swimmingly.

BabyShaark · 27/01/2025 21:18

Woah, I agree with most people here, doesn’t happen often 😂

Loved Who, didn’t have “my” Doctor as I only came to the U.K. in 2005, but age-wise it would have been that dude in the cricket jumper (don’t like him, 80’s Who is awful).

Love Troughton and Pertwee. Actually started with Tenant. Loved his episodes. Loved Eccleston and Smith. Once Capaldi took over I faded out. Sorry-lines to complicated. Sad, coz I thought he’d be great, Pertwee Mark Two.

Wanted to give the woman a chance but that’s when it became box-ticking. Dr Who Bingo 😂😂😂

Meanwhile I wish Tenant would keep his piehole shut, that level of virtue-signaling is sickening. Like what he said about Kemi Badenoch. And I’m not supporting Kemi Badenoch politically, but what he said was, on a human level, the lowest of the low.

Then you have the whole ideology agenda. I don’t care if there is s as trans character in Who. Great, trans people exist, like someone said. But don’t shove it into my face where it’s not relevant to the story.

Then Ncuti. I like the idea of a Black Who if it came across as natural. But after the woman, it just seem like another box needed to be ticked.

What’s next, a bi-sexual, one legged Chinese Jew with gender-fluid pronouns?

I hope this thread won’t turn into open season against anyone who is not white, male, straight?

That certainly isn’t my argument. And I do not wish to be associated with racist, homophobic or disablist posts.

I don't think you need to police us in advance.

I would hope people would police themselves?

I disagree with the choice of one new writer. But I have already been offended - personally offended as an individual - by some of the posts here.

I trust you don’t believe I should be afraid to say so?

Good to know. I'm glad there is still some integrity left. Not to mention safeguarding.

I'm just shocked that any school, any school at all, would stock this pornographic middle-aged men's weird fantasy. For bloody kids!!

I'm constantly shocked at some schools' (and Librarians') disregard for safekeeping where students' reading matter is concerned*. My school is pretty good, but I still fly under the radar, making sure that all my excellent reasons for including/not including each book are carefully stored for quick retrieval if required.

*NB ensuring that what a school library provides is appropriate for the students according to age and maturity, as well as reading ability, is not 'censorship'.

AlmondLoaf · 27/01/2025 22:45

Matt Smith was the last "doctor" couldn't get into the Peter capaldi storyline as the plot was too rubbish.
It died a long time ago.

TinselAngel · 27/01/2025 22:49

I had high hopes for Capaldi but didn't enjoy his Doctor as much as I thought I was going to the first time around. He was too much of a contrast to Tennant and Smith I think. I've enjoyed them more when I've rewatched them.

OP posts:
LittleMyLittle · 27/01/2025 23:00

I actually liked Capaldi, what I saw of him. Smith's stories felt too high on their own cleverness and I disliked Eleven's characterisation - he was a bit mumbly-bumbly for my liking. Capaldi had a good presence and of the episodes I actually watched, I found the plot easier to follow.

That said, I think I was primed to not like Smith because he replaced "my" Doctor - Tennant was the one I grew up with.

But as an adult I think Eccleston is my favourite Revival Doctor. He was such a fascinating character.

Theunamedcat · 27/01/2025 23:03

Capaldi good actor piss poor scripts (did anyone else think bill potts was gay? She never said 🙄🤐) jodie I really REALLY wanted to succeed but they kept throwing more and more supporting (men) actors in with her she got swamped underneath all that and poor scripts AGAIN I quit after that I'm pretending it finished with Matt Smith he wasn't perfect had some clangers but overall I liked him he was alien who looked human and that was perfect for the role

Whycanineverthinkofone · 27/01/2025 23:17

We Should have listened to ecclestone and why he left.

PinkFrogss · 27/01/2025 23:17

I really disliked the last season. As others have said from Capaldi onwards the storylines got too complex, they’ve now simplified the storylines and completely dumbed down any sort of message we may get from the episode. It’s all just so blatant.

I thought this new series might be less so to cater more towards an American audience but apparently not. I think I won’t even bother this time.

Its a shame as I love DW and RTD, and was looking forward to getting back into it.

MysteriousUsername · 27/01/2025 23:17

Matt Smith was the best. Clara was the beginning of the downfall for me. Once Peter Capaldi came in (he's a brilliant actor) it for some reason became the Clara show and ruined it for me. Loved it when she left and Bill was the companion.

I was so excited for Jodie Whitaker, but again, stupid companions. The Fam ffs. Why did the female doctor need 3 companions? Woman can't manage on her own?

Ncuti Gatwa is great, but the shoehorning in of a transwoman (yes, we know they exist, they never shut up about it or about having special days, weeks, months to remind us how so very oppressed and special and brave and stunning they are 🙄) ruined it for me. I did like the episode with Neil Patrick Harris though.

So many great actors let down by shit writing. And it looks like it's only going to get shitter.

PinkFrogss · 27/01/2025 23:19

Whycanineverthinkofone · 27/01/2025 23:17

We Should have listened to ecclestone and why he left.

Yes and the issues with John Barrowman and the actor who played Micky Smith (his name escapes me). It’s certainly put a dampener on the old series for me and probably many others.

SinnerBoy · 27/01/2025 23:27

Juno Dawson- wrote what, Datun? And they think he's fine for a children's programme? I'm, well, that's just horrifying.

SinnerBoy · 28/01/2025 01:34

Oh. Well thanks for that. My daughter is turning 12 and is totally captured, I'll meed to watch out for that.

MaybeNotBob · 28/01/2025 02:02

Personally I think they made a big mistake making the doctor a romantic/sexual character, at all, back with Rose and Tennant's doctor. And the doctors wife was just an awful addition.

Very much this!

As someone who came in during the Patrick Troughton era, the downfall started when they wanted to make the assistants more important than the Doctor. Rose started the rot, and then Catherine Tate just fucked everything up. Capaldi should have been good, but was trying too hard, and Whittaker was given scripts that made her seem like an idiot. It hasn't got any better since then.

I genuinely don't know anyone in the UK who still watches it.

Ruined it for me once they started with a female Dr.

I do.
UK and still love Dr Who. DH does too.
Wasn't so keen on Jodie Whittaker's run, loving Ncuti Gatwa's portrayal though.

‘My 10 year old son loved it, he bought all the figurines, dressed up as David Tennant ‘

I don’t think many more dc will be doing this, in the light of recent events…

The BBC are in a time warp / parallel universe of their own, shared only by the Graun, and maybe some of the wider reaches of Reddit.

I don't think people will stop cosplaying the Dr anytime soon, very popular character at conventions!
