Quite a few posts ago in this thread I remember somebody - was it you magpie - saying that those fuzzy blobs are actually droppings. I mean, I think there was a bird over the one pictured.

No that was me, lowering the tone😏

Love your creations, Alison, the Ziggy Stardust ones are brill!

Are pretendy glasses de rigueur with lab coats, as AI seems to suggest, Magpie?
At least none of them have accompanied the pretendy glasses and simpering look with a couple of buttons open to show ...oh great, I get to write the funniest word I learnt in 2024 - norkage!Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 22/12/2024 10:40

No, what is de rigueur with lab coats is proper safety glasses, which those aren't. They should have side protection bits. They aren't remotely sexy so it may be hard to get the AIs to put them on a female scientist.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/12/2024 10:54

And depending on the type of work, get that long hair tied back!

The old trope of a female scientist loosening her locks and removing unsexy glasses may have a grain of truth.Grin

I didn't need a lab coat for my PhD, but the one I had as a chemistry undergrad over 40(Shock) years ago fit my 5'1" self pretty well... have things regressed? My research lab was so cold in winter that my protective clothing was fingerless gloves and a warm woolly.

DeanElderberry · 22/12/2024 10:54

They are slightly reminiscent of Dax in the Deep Space 9 James Bond spoof episode. I seem to remember that neither she nor Kira were very impressed by Bashir's fantasy versions of them (though Dax, being more than 300 years old, is quite forgiving of young people's foibles).

'Are pretendy glasses de rigueur with lab coats, as AI seems to suggest?'

No, I asked the AI for them, because 'bespectacled women' are less likely to be portrayed as bimbos than 'women' are, in AI-land. I'd love to know the secret words ?Inky uses to get real women in her images.

Love @AlisonDonut 's bowls & beakers. I especially love the thought of her French neighbours coming round for a drink & standing there chatting, holding a beaker which proclaims them to have a grim butt.

DeanElderberry · 22/12/2024 11:51

So the only thing stopping us from constantly "leap[ing] on each other like a pair of crazed voles" (to quote Dax) is being able to see the other person clearly? Interesting. And not inexplicable.

Those would be Carsassian voles, of course.

@MarieDeGournay I have real glasses, but as Errol rightly says, safety glasses are de rigueur so I was usually to be found wearing glasses AND goggles, with my hair tied back, nitrile gloves on and lab coat fully done up. Which is not at all a sexy look!
I'm a good six inches taller than Errol, and at a JJ cup (and also working in underheated labs) my lab coat has to be big enough to fit around the chest, which leaves it too long in the arms. As a plant and soil scientist I'm usually accessorising my lab coat with safety boots these days. My interpretation of "professional dress"!

DeanElderberry · 22/12/2024 11:59

Cardassian voles.

of course

so glad we're in the wrong part of the galaxy for those, even worse than regular voles, don't even look cute.

Well Magpie, I tried to describe you to the AI as 'statuesque woman in labcoat with overly long sleeves, wearing work boots, spectacles & safety glasses' leaving out the JJ cup detail otherwise it would refuse to make the image - & this is how it sees you! I don't know what it's on today, but I could do with some of it myself. Will you be rocking these looks in the new year??

I'm not sure what kind of 'work' AI imagines Maggers intends to do in (or out) of those boots and those shorts. Best hope not to get a spot inspection from an elfin safety bod.

Magpiecomplex · 22/12/2024 12:08

Goodness Android! I love a bit of dramatic dressing but I don't think I could carry off either of those looks! I shall endeavour to channel the first one though... She'll be my spirit scientist.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 22/12/2024 12:08

OK. So I added in safety gloves & changed work boots to safety boots. It hasn't improved things & I can only hope image 2 doesn't reflect your workplace experiences!

I think 'statuesque' is bringing out the adolescent in the AI.

I don't know what is going on with those last few images but my laptop won't load them.
ETA: Now loaded and wowsers. Those lab technicians are smokin'.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 22/12/2024 12:11

They're not THAT raunchy!

Unfortunately statuesque brings out the adolescent in the adolescents I mostly teach, too! 🤣

I used to work in a laboratory. In comparison, they are what every lab nerd dreams of.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 22/12/2024 12:14

So I left out 'statuesque' & this is what I got. (It still won't do double glasses.)

ifIwerenotanandroid · 22/12/2024 12:19

Or, since the AI learns from what's gone before, maybe it was all the rage at some time in the past.

That's what worries me about using AI for inspiration: presumably I might be copying what someone else has made before, but I wouldn't know.

Only the ones attracted to women! As a straight female lab nerd, I still have fond memories of the male tech who mostly did sample collection outside. In the height of summer he'd work shirtless in shorts, and just sling a lab coat on to bring the samples in to the lab...

ifIwerenotanandroid · 22/12/2024 12:21

Ooh er missus.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 22/12/2024 12:23

Obviously I asked the AI...

Swap the shorts for raggedy denim cut-offs and that's remarkably accurate! Obviously the women in the lab were not wearing pencil skirts and high heels but I wish you luck trying to persuade the AI of this...

I could take up the sleeves for you, if you like, @Magpiecomplex.

Today’s jobs are packing to go down to Suffolk, and trying to summon up the energy to bake snickerdoodles, as a contribution to the feasting.

I love a challenge. I got some ludicrous results of which this is the most normal. Hope it brings back happy memories...

And now I'm off to make soup & put little cheesy-topped bread things in the oven (Sainsburys). Won't be flame-throwering my peppers like Errol, though. Oh, & I need to find out what snickerdoodles are.
