Long time poster but changed name as I couldn't find a thread already and wanted to rant.

BBC 100 Women 2024: Who is on the list this year? - BBC News

Here we go, once again BBC couldn't find 100 women... Ahrgh!
Come on! Do we all just look at these lists now and find the intruder?

Where's Willy 😆

I was thinking as I read the Op that it's just an annual festive game. Of hunt the bloke.

It's a shame as it eclipses the achievements of so many women.

I mean look at this nonsense

Brigitte Baptiste, Colombia
Ecologist
As a transwoman biologist, Brigitte Baptiste explores the common patterns between biodiversity and gender identity.
She uses a queer lens to analyse landscapes and species in a bid to expand the notion of "nature" to better protect ecosystems. In her 2018 TEDx talk, she used the Quindío wax palm, Colombia’s national tree, as an example of an organism known to switch its gender from male to female across its lifetime.
A renowned academic, Baptiste spent 10 years as director of the Alexander von Humboldt Institute and currently serves as president of Universidad EAN in Bogota, a higher-education institution focused on sustainable entrepreneurship.
She has also campaigned for better funding to get more LGTBQ+ people into higher education.

just as humans are not clownfish, humans are also not palm trees

It's so ridiculous to anthropomorphise nature like this - if this palm tree can reproduce in either a male or female way, it's down to evolution and a strategy for it to keep its species going. This has nothing in common with human gender identities, which as we are always being told are completely independent from our biology!

How about we mass propose to the BBC have a Best Womens Rights Campaigner of the year? I’m so sick, first thing I read in paper this morning 🤢 is this a public vote? I originally posted about Barbara Bandit and left me wondering how many woman voted for a real woman! How do we fight this? I voted & complained to BBC re Bandit what else can we do!

But I've seen too many trans women claim to be women's rights campaigners, they use it as a cover.

Cesarina · 03/12/2024 11:38

Digressing, I know, but the Beeb have never included me on this list😩
I mean, like..........they have no idea what they're missing🤷🏻‍♀️

Endthisshit · 03/12/2024 11:45

Trans saying they are women’s rights campaigners FFS SO sick of this

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 03/12/2024 12:05

I mean, even Baptiste knows he isn't a woman and didn't achieve his lot as either a woman, or even a transwoman, but as a man - so why the fuck do the BBC think he should be included on this list, the gaslighting bastards?

Baptiste's own word...
I believe that what I have achieved, whether it be a little or a lot, was because I built it before becoming Brigitte publicly
Baptiste transitioned in 1998 aged 35, and had already completed a master’s degree and a doctorate, co-founded and directed a non-profit and served on boards.

FranticFrankie · 03/12/2024 12:27

Don’t hold back @TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers!!💯👍🏼👍🏼
This was totally expected but pleased to see the fragrant IK not on the list
But seriously some of those women!! Wow- some fabulous, awe- inspiring Women on there!

StrongFemaleCharacter · 03/12/2024 12:29

It was encouraging to see how many people were commenting "spot the man" on the BBC's FB post of this.

iwishihadaname · 03/12/2024 12:35

AlisonDonut · 03/12/2024 08:06

I mean at least they didn't choose a man who punched women on international TV, so there is progress at least.

Who is this?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/12/2024 12:39

Two to choose from at this year's Olympics. Competed in the women's boxing, both have disorders of sexual development and although male by all reasonable measures and in the eyes of the sports's governing body I believe, the International Olympic Committee decided effectively they could self-ID as female. Imane Khalif was one. I forget the other - Taiwanese?

Edited to add the important detail that they both won Gold Medals, and thus deprived genuine female competitors of their rightful rewards and acclaim. Also of course a huge safety concern, but that didn't matter to the IOC.

Any good at footie, Cesarina? We'll all vote for you in Footballer of the Year 2025 to make up for your inexplicable omission from this year's Top 100😄

WhamFantastic · 03/12/2024 08:53

I also opened the list to play spot the man. Didn't have to go far, I think this chap was number five. Was too irritated to look further.
The blurb does seem to be demonstrate they are scraping the barrel. Palm tree gender FFS! Really no other women in the WORLD more worthy than this nonsense?!

Well that didn't take long! Waaay too obvious, from a glance 🙄

Livinginaclock · 03/12/2024 13:49

PomegranateOfPersephone · 03/12/2024 08:20

A biologist no less! Surely that has to be part of the trolling too.

My daughter is halfway through a biology masters, she goes along with this.
I hope it's because she scared to be ostracised, but you never know these days.

ArabellaScott · 03/12/2024 13:53

Gettingmadderallthetime · 03/12/2024 08:19

Pleased to see Gisele Pelicot on this list. Struck by how many are identified as LGBTQ+ champions. Is as though the BBC thinks 'women and other minority groups Top 100'.

My personal list would have JKR, Helen Joyce, FWS team, Amy Hamm, Riley Gaines, Reem Alsalem and Gisele on it. But my list would be 'women who are fighting for women's rights'. Maybe FWR needs it's own list?

Edited

Ooh, yes, we have done one in the past, haven't we? Great idea.

Karatema · 03/12/2024 15:34

First thing I did was look for the men and was surprised there was only one!

Hopefully, next year it will be 100 women but it's the BBC so very unlikely!

There won't because the BBC deliberately add in a token trans woman.

The BBC 100 Women list is a box ticking exercise, and every year they struggle to find a trans woman to add to the list, and the personal achievements of said trans women get weaker and weaker by the years.

FranticFrankie · 03/12/2024 16:17

Do the BBC do any research at all???
This is crazy

@MarieDeGournay I'm not especially good at footie, but after your inspiring and encouraging post, I'll practise and make damn well sure I get good at it!😄
Thank you for your support! Flowers

ArabellaScott · 03/12/2024 16:43

Here is whom we are supposed to be celebrating. We are supposed to look for inspiring examples of womanhood in this fetishist.

BBC, this is a fucking insult.

BBC 100 - once again
BBC 100 - once again
BBC 100 - once again
DuesToTheDirt · 03/12/2024 17:54

As soon as I saw this headline on the BBC, I wondered how many men were on the list.

DuesToTheDirt · 03/12/2024 17:54

@ArabellaScott WTF?!

maltravers · 03/12/2024 18:56

Ew 😬

weebarra · 03/12/2024 19:00

Isn't it sad that so many of us went straight to 'spot the man' because we knew there would be one?
Some many incredibly inspiring women on that list though.
