What do you make of it? I was all for a break from the cesspit that it is TwiX, but I'm getting dubious vibes. Set up my account, searched for a few of the accounts which I follow on Twitter, got to Kathleen Stock and all I found was transphobe, blah blah type posts. Depressing.

The BBC seem to be advertising BlueSky a lot and it seems that left-leaning organisations don't like that Twitter is not the echo chamber that it once was.

I don't particularly use social media, but it is useful for finding out information that the mainstream media refuse to report on (like a lot of these gender issues).

I just can't believe that people have seen the dangers of echo chambers and all they're doing is jumping to the next echo chamber.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 16/11/2024 13:56

How hilarious would it be if Elon then bought Blue Sky? 🤭

I've just joined BlueSky and started trying to replicate my TwiX account over there. Pointless. Either I accept that my BlueSky experience will be very different (I might actually try to curate something that isn't remotely to do with sex realism or GC perspectives, which wouldn't be a bad thing, perhaps) or I don't bother. I'm not leaving TwiX (yet) as I like to keep an eye on the bastards and what they're saying, but (and please don't sling me off here!) I'm finding X so polarised now. So many GC accounts I've followed for years seem to have drifted somewhere I'm not always comfortable with. I still care passionately about biology and fairness and being able to speak out about these things - but either I stay on X and swallow a lot of stuff I really don't like, or I hop on board BlueSky and just keep away from that whole discussion (which doesn't seem to be happening there anyway). I think perhaps the answer is just to ... drop this sort of social media, full stop. X hasn't been healthy for anyone for a long time and I'm quite sure BlueSky will be just as bad. Give it time.

Bluesky is a brand new platform.
Up to what 1, 2 weeks ago, there was no point for me been there.
Im using Twitter to keep up with other disabled people/chronically ill people and with the research+ researchers. And no one was there. So I stayed on Twitter.

Then the mass exodus started and BS now feels like a nice comfortable place to be in.

If GC is your area, you’ll need to create that space. Maybe by enticing people to move there too (there has been plenty of grumbles about moving in the disabled community for months). Inviting others? Or maybe it will just happen organically as it did with us.
But not finding (yet) your group of people - I think it’s too early tbh.

You Will read his poetry about Nietsche. Don't think you can escape just by moving to another platform.

In the past 24 hours, we have received more than 42,000 reports (an all-time high for one day). We're receiving about 3,000 reports/hour. To put that into context, in all of 2023, we received 360k reports.

We're triaging this large queue so the most harmful content such as CSAM is removed quickly.

Inevitable. Sadly.

It’s like a huge roomful of kids shouting “Miss….MIIISSSSS she was mean to me”

CSAM does need removing to be fair. Its not exactly complaining to the teacher that someone pulled a face at you. As always, filtering out the genuinely harmful stuff from things people overreacted to or are just reporting to cause trouble/mayhem is the tough it.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 16/11/2024 21:12

A site that has Naomi Cunningham posts labelled intolerance & hidden or that is happy to leave up a post suggesting Suzanne Moore be punched in the mouth or posts that accuse james Dreyfus of hate & doxxing is not one I have a great deal of faith in in terms of balance & moderation

RedToothBrush · 16/11/2024 21:34

AndCoronets · 15/11/2024 07:30

I gave up on Mastodon and Threads annoys me because I really like Instagram, the emphasis on the visual suits me, so the constant pushing of Threads is a nuisance.
I do think newspapers boycotting X is a mistake, The Guardian especially - this is how echo chambers are made.

I think the guardian may come to regret this in time.

Twitter is flawed BUT I don't think anything else is offering an alternative that fixes the actual problem either.

PermanentTemporary · 16/11/2024 22:22

I searched for a few accounts I would hope to find on Blue Sky and eg the handles like fondofbeetles are being squatted by other people. Delightful.

fabricstash · 17/11/2024 07:58

Well I searched for the topic "women's rights" and got some fairly interesting suggestions that were not too polite. Seems like they don't like women much

MarketValveForks · 17/11/2024 08:48

@fabricstash I'd like to be part of building up a presence of women-focused and feminist content in bluesky. I don't want to fill it up with people constantly picking fights with the oposing ideology. So far I have found an account called "Feminist Media Histories" which has made 2 posts so far. Looking out for more

Suzanne Moore's experience:

"In the kinder , gentler place someone has said I should be tarred and feathered and kicked in the face till I have no teeth."

And Jenny Lindsay:

"I've seen posts saying I torched my career on purpose by someone involved in harassing a major institution for a good number of years for appearing not to agree that I should be hounded out of my sanity and livelihood. Charming people, Suzanne. All on my Christmas card list. 😂😅"

I'm constantly reading how TwiX is a cesspool of hate and vileness, but just not seeing it. Maybe those bad algorithms don't like me. Perhaps I should stop pausing at stuff like this https://x.com/HumansNoContext/status/1854907521812562347 (don't worry, that's not hateful, unless you can't stand Haribo).

Is this true??! My mind is blown! Thanks for this! 🤯🤣

YesterdaysFuture · 17/11/2024 10:13

It is worrying that BlueSky already has a problem with child abuse imagery, I know this was one of the first things Musk cleaned up on Twitter when he took it over, and a lot of people flounced off after he started cleaning it up.

Why is it that we see campaigns for "minor attracted people" from a certain section of activism and then this awful material starts appearing on a network they have all gone off to. And yet again celebrities are all too happy to turn a blind eye to it.

I agree this is going to be a problem for them.

Reading the "discovery feed" on a new Bluesky account* feels like pushing through lots of Americans, to find yourself standing on the threshold of a terribly polite UK dinner party, while out in the garden a bunch of anime porn creators conduct an orgy.

*out of curiosity only

I expected the first two, but the amount of the last automatically offered was unexpected. That and posts from people working in the porn industry saying that they got to the site first and so everyone else had to live with it. So I guess my experience is not that unusual.

You won't like it. Transphobes will be banned or have their posts censored.

Not everywhere is a far right unmoderated cesspit like the places Musk buys.

Most social media sites having rules isn't a bad thing at all. Logging into a site and seeing hate, threats, doxxing and OF spambots all over the place isn't fun.

Where do abusers place themselves to avoid suspicion?

Behind the perceived righteous and good in society.
