This is a depressing but instructive read. A common theme seems to be that the men claim they just didn't bother to think. And that they "didn't know" or didn't understand about the concept of consent. Is that just what they say, or a true reflection?

A soldier, a nurse, a lorry driver and dozens more: who are the men accused over rape and assault of Gisèle Pelicot?

Dominique Pelicot has admitted drugging and raping his wife. Fifty other men may face up to 20 years in prison if found guilty in case that has shocked the world

Sickening. I just about managed to get to the end. How repulsive to publish these repellent men's whining excuses. Legally, doubtless they'll all be told to use anything they can think of/make up/augment to plead for leniency. This doesn't mean those should be published, it's repulsive. Especially the one claiming he'd have picked someone else if he'd wanted to rape. I'm speechless.

ALL of them went to a chatroom entitled "without her knowledge". That makes them repulsive pieces of shit already. I'm damn sure nowhere on that website does it have a disclaimer along the lines of "this is only a game, be sure to get consent". Course it fucking didn't, because it's a forum for rapists.

Gisele is so brave but what a hideous picture this case paints of the revoltingness of an outwardly "normal" cross section of men. Terrifying. I wonder whether any of these men will have a hard time understanding consent when it comes to their own bodies in prison.

VictorianBigot · 23/10/2024 15:09

Has it been reported how Dominique Pelicot was acquiring all these tranquillisers?

Lalgarh · 23/10/2024 16:14

One of her attackers was an anaesthetist, incidentally

lcakethereforeIam · 23/10/2024 16:27

I noticed that one. Made me feel a little nauseous. I hope he was never left alone with a patient.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 23/10/2024 17:10

It wasn't me.
I only needed her husbands consent
I thought she was pretending
I thought it was a game
I went into a trance and remember nothing

What a bunch of pathetic creatures they are.

TheaBrandt · 23/10/2024 17:14

Yes and their whiny little anecdotes about sad childhoods. Cry me a fucking river

He was an anaesthetist nurse. I wondered if Mr Pelicot had somebody like that obtaining the medicines for him.

WomenShouldStillWinWomensSportsIsBack · 23/10/2024 17:34

Will they get harsher sentences in France for pleading not guilty initially, does anyone know?

theDudesmummy · 23/10/2024 08:56

I don't buy the "I just didn't think" or "I didn't understand about consent" lines. More like "I just didn't care" or "consent is irrelevant because it's just a woman".

Agree with you. Men do not take otters feelings into consideration unless it directly affects them. Very sad but true as I've experienced this many times with males around me. It's like they don't ever think, just focus on what they want and others can just deal with it. It's like a linear mode of thinking but women think of others, the future, the past and the details. Men just go for it, whatever it is and are mostly entitled and unapologetic. Selfish pricks mostly.
Hope they all get prison sentences to teach them a lesson 😔

ExtraordinaryMachine1 · 23/10/2024 18:27

I couldn't get very far through. The way it was written was just enraging. Ye gads, there is no need to apply the old shit sandwich technique to these men!

Men understand consent perfectly well when it comes to their own holes.

This

Zofloramummy · 23/10/2024 19:37

I read the full list. I’m astounded that some women are sticking with these men and one woman who had split up with one of them, wants to get back with him!

What struck me was how Giselle was viewed as the property of her husband. The view seemed to be that as he had given his consent then that was sufficient. She was not considered as a human being at all.

serendipitea · 23/10/2024 19:41

Many of them say "I am not a rapist" - so much denialism, so much lack of honesty and reflection.

I read the article, but feel horrified with the tone in the Guardian, all those justifications and excuses.

It’s probably part of the #BeKind BS the Guardian pushes out. Some of the hard-left people I’ve known have been vocally obsessed sympathetic to the childhood plights of rapists and murderers.

Dder · 17/11/2024 01:59

Agreed, they just cover up for each other. We need to ask the males in our lives, would you rape if you could get away with it and when they say, probably, then stop knowing them!

coxesorangepippin · 17/11/2024 02:00

What’s with the little sob stories at the end of each description?

Who gives a fuck? Why do you only ever see these excuses when people have done the most heinous things

^

Exactly. What about the women?? What about Gisele???

Saschka · 17/11/2024 02:13

Yes that sounds somewhat more bathetic than he probably intended.

Yes, trust the fucking Guardian to solemnly centre their tales of woe.

lcakethereforeIam · 17/11/2024 14:58

I think the little sob stories, perhaps through repetition, actually demonstrate how empty and lacking they are as justifications for what they did. 'I raped this unconscious woman because...erm...💡'. As excuses they're all various flavours of pathetic. Seeing them lined up like that in their little vignettes really underlines it. I don't know if that was the Guardian's intentHmm

Eta the ones who claim they thought it was a consensual kink, doesn't providing something as an excuse for being a damaged human who would rape, kind of undermine that?

MarkWithaC · 17/11/2024 16:14

ChateauMargaux · 23/10/2024 09:31

And the slightly sneery comment 'what lorry driver hasn't visited sex workers'... is about reminding all men that they have sexual needs and urges that are 'natural' and that since time began, men have sought to have their needs met, at the expense of the autonomy, safety and freely given consent of women. It's a reminder to the judges, that these men are 'ordinary' men with 'ordinary' urges, being painted as monsters.

I hope not a single one of them gets off.

The issue of consent in French law seems to leave a loophole.. these are the words of one of the defense lawyers.

'In France, you don't need to have obtained the victim's consent necessarily to ensure that it's not rape," Guillaume de Palma, who represents several of the defendants, told reporters last week.

Earlier the same day, he had caused outcry in the courtroom when he remarked: "There's rape and there's rape, and without intent to commit it, it's not rape."

I hope that the necessity to prove rape on the basis that it needs to have an element of violence, threat or surprise to it, does not allow these men to walk free.

There's rape and there's rape, and without intent to commit it, it's not rape.
I suppose this goes to mens rea and actus reus (do they have the same concept in French law?).
Although the counter-argument is, what DID you intend to do/think you were doing; or, put another way, did you really think she wanted sex with you?

Tooes · 17/11/2024 16:20

All those men either enjoyed the power trip of raping the woman and/or genuinely saw her as property of the man. Pure misogyny. Their sob stories are simply attempts at a reduced sentence.

GenderlessVoid · 17/11/2024 17:26

caramac04 · 23/10/2024 14:21

Their sexual gratification was more important than a woman’s consent. I suspect that knowing it was without consent heightened their experience.
Utter scum who should be kicked in the bin never to emerge.

This was my first thought. They knew they didn't have Gisele's consent. They went to a forum called "without her knowledge" bc they got off on raping women and it seemed like the easiest and least risky way to do so. Plus her husband will be their audience, which some will get off on too.

It's very hard to read. Gisele awes me with her courage and tenacity. She's an inspiration and I think her for what she is doing for rape victims everywhere.

unsync · 17/11/2024 17:33

Horrifying isn't it? Its hard to actually put into words the revulsion this causes. When you read about the behaviour and how willing these men were, it's like it was a commonplace thing for them. There's not a lot of remorse is there?

MarieDeGournay · 19/11/2024 12:06

Gisèle Pelicot has been questioned by defence lawyers - only doing their job, of course, but it's hard to take. She maintains her courageous attitude.
Yes, we WILL remember Gisèle Pelicot.

Gisèle has been questioned by multiple lawyers today. The last to cross-examine her asked about her decision to continue using the surname "Pelicot".
Gisèle explains that when the trial began her children were "ashamed" of the name.
She adds: "I have grandchildren who are called that.
"Today, I want them to be proud of their grandmother.
"My name is known across the world now. They shouldn't be ashamed of carrying that name.
"Today we will remember Gisèle Pelicot."
