Here's another one in that series. Any idea what the woman is doing in this picture? I haven't got a clue. And this one features a sexless cat standing on its hind legs with a cup of tea, that wasn't asked for

Add clothes to the list of things which confuse AI. I'm supposed to be wearing a whole lab coat, not just one sleeve!

What about that furry beetle, bottom left? A beetle and a quokka loved each other very very much? Or is it actually a boot-scraper? For red wellies of course.

Oh yes, it definitely can't do clothes. It has no idea what casual clothes are, or even what 21st-century clothing is

It is a species previously unknown - and hopefully it hasn't survived due to its lack of proper jaws

Blimey Inky, where did you find a photo of me in real life from?! Although I don't know what she's doing either. If I had to guess, she's staring very intently at a raspberry on a fork.

I think she's checking the cat's temperature, which is why it's giving her the side-eye. It's a new thermometer & she's got the badly-refolded instructions in her other hand. They'll never fit back in the box like that.

It's very weird when you give the AI specific instructions & it thinks what the picture needs is a random irrelevant object. I get that, too.

I wonder if image generation is actually the most challenging area for AI? It can generate nonsensical images and horrific hybrids, but who wants those?

I think she's trying to work out the exact point of balance on the fork. She seems to be holding a paper aeroplane in her other hand, so that might be relevant.

So AI just added a sexless cat standing on its hind legs with a cup of tea for the heck of it, eh? Well of course it didConfused

Did it also just add in the cake toppers ? they are quite cute.

I've also noticed a levitating mug just to the right of the moose, and a basket of nuts on the floor.

The cake toppers imply that this is a wedding cake. Who's getting married? This doesn't look like a wedding venue to me

She could be an expression of the AI's befuddlement over knitting - crumpled knitting pattern in one hand, singular knitting needle in the other, thinking "Well how the heck is this supposed to work?!"

I asked the AI to create an image showing clearly how to start knitting, with all of the equipment that you might need.

It said the image generation wasn't working and it couldn't do it. But it was able to describe how to begin knitting, and offer instructions as to how to make a fair isle jumper. That's what makes me wonder about how difficult it is for it to generate specific images.

Sigh!

I think there's a big difference between these chat and image generation systems which give a misleading impression of 'intelligence', and some of the other applications of machine learning such as AlphaFold which I mentioned upthread. Some of the structures it creates are bad, but - apart from the fact it's usually pretty obvious - you get 'confidence scores'. It's giving genuinely useful results for previously intractable problems.

It's built on a huge amount of robust experimental data though, and it's designed to do one thing well. These serious systems use part of the experimental data to train, and part to test against - I don't understand how or even if the chat and image generation 'AI's do verification.

Bar Gerbil, can I have a pint of hot chocolate with extra cream, a large cheesy pizza and a quiet corner please? I have a lot of marking to do.
