I think the degu in question had been in and out of the shop repeatedly - the poor little beast just wasn't fit for normal family life - reading about them, they're obviously animals that need to live with lots of other degus to be healthy - maybe that was the point of the homily, we are all like borderline psychotic degus.
I'd never heard of them before (or since until today).
