I mean, your answer was honest, truthful & succinct but frankly I was looking for a little more information than that.

Where are they and what's the context?

ifIwerenotanandroid · 14/10/2024 23:02

It's OK, thanks. Best guess = Su-24.

Not over the Bluestocking.

That looks more likely!

I never knew you were into planes, Boily (surely you can fly without them?). Amazing that you can be married to someone for 22 years hours & still not really know them.

Both my parents were in the RAF! However, I know sweet FA about planes!

And what a 22 hours it was! Talk about whirlwind!

To the planespotters here: do you know what these are? Very current.

Are they Eurofighter Typhoons?

lcakethereforeIam · 15/10/2024 11:26

Not Eurofighter, the wings are angled wrong.

MarieDeGournay · 15/10/2024 11:41

I know very little about modern military aircraft, so my only contribution to IDing these planes would be 'Is it a bird? Is it a plane?'Grin

I found out yesterday [accidentally, I didn't go looking for it, it just appeared while I was channel-hopping last night] that the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fighter jet can do that vertical take-off and landing thing the Harrier Jump Jet used to do, and I was surprised at how impressed I was - a pacificist on one shoulder saying 'But they are weapons of war! Instruments of death!' and a cross between Bart Simpson and a techie on the other shoulder saying 'Yeah yeah, but wow, how cool is that!'Confused

The Harriers are awesome when they do the hovering. The effect is eerie. I also feel a little ambivalent about them. Whenever I saw one doing its thing, I couldn't help thinking about the amount of fuel it was burning through to do that.

When Cameron gave them away to the American airforce I was told the Yanks couldn't believe their luck. They probably weren't worrying about the gallons per mile.

Oh dear, I hadn't thought about the fuel consumption - so I need a third shoulder to accommodate an environmentalist saying 'Think about the fuel consumption! Just stop oil!'Smile
But I can't imagine any way in which a human being with three shoulders, or four legs, or six fingers could be produced by something like, I dunno, generative artificial intelligence software or something... nah, could never happenGrin

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/10/2024 12:11

I thought you said 'The Harriers are awesome when they do the hoovering', @lcakethereforeIam - I thought we'd added a new creature to the staff of the Bluestocking!

Clearly I haven't had enough coffee yet.

Can you all cross your fingers for me this afternoon, around 2.30 - I've got a phone appointment with the GP, to talk about changing from Metformin to Dapoglofizin, for the diabetes. I have an awful suspicion that they want people on the cheapest drug available, and I want to have something that won't affect my kidneys, thyroid, colitis or B12 absorption, so I am worried I may have a fight on my hands.

When the boys were just teens/just under teenage, they went to an RAF open day, and they got to have a ride in one of the transport planes - I think it was a Lancaster - one with the rear door that opens into a ramp, so you can fling stuff off the back in flight. During the flight, the RAF crew opened that rear door, and the kids were strapped into harnesses, and allowed to go and look over the edge! Ds3 was so eager, he ran to the edge of the door, and put years onto dh, who was with them.

BIL was in the TA, and was seconded to the RAF as a loadmaster, so he could be sent to replace RAF regulars who were being sent out to Iraq. They had to practice loading the planes, but didn't have a spare plane to use, so they chalked the outline onto the tarmac and loaded that instead. Necessity is the grandmother of invention.

MarieDeGournay · 15/10/2024 12:17

2.30 - good thoughts for Woley - on today's to-do listSmile
Hope you get the outcome you need.

I'm retrospectively jealous of your boys, getting a ride in a transport plane with the cargo door open! Shock

Boiledbeetle · 15/10/2024 12:20

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius Not quite sure how the plane is going to get the stray crisps under the seats in the pub!

We have some worries here at the moment. Ds1 has a rescue greyhound, who up to now has been an absolutely lovely dog, but has just started food-guarding - he stole food from the toddler and snapped at ds1 and dil when they tried to take it back. He didn't break the skin, but even so, they can't risk him being around the toddler, or the babies when they arrive.

For the moment he is in a muzzle (he's an ex racer, so he is very well used to it and perfectly happy in it) but that isn't a long term solution.

We would have him up here in a heartbeat, but he chases cats, and we have CatBastard - and even though he is a bit of a git, we don't want him chased and caught by a greyhound. He's over 17 too, so even if we were prepared to rehome him (which we aren't - he is a git, but he is our git and we do love him), he wouldn't easily find a home or settle into a new home.

We've asked around amongst the dog people in the village, and there's no-one who has offered to take him - he'd need a cat free home with no children.

They got him from the Greyhound Trust, who can't take him back because they are full to bursting, and say he would be PTS. They are going to talk to an expert from the GT, to see if they can suggest anything - apparently he is underweight - racing/ex racing greyhounds need to be bigger and better fed than other greyhounds, so while the vet says he is a good weight, the Trust say he needs to put on several kilos, so he could be food guarding because he's starving/hungry - but even if feeding him up is the answer, could they ever trust him again?

There doesn't seem to be an answer.

Sorry for the offload.

lcakethereforeIam · 15/10/2024 12:26

NHS, penny wise and pound foolish. Short term the cheapest option might save them money. If it reacts badly with your other conditions or medications it'll almost certainly be more expensive overall. Saying nothing about the effect on your quality of life. Fingers crossed for you Woley

F576c5xr65rctuutcu5ff57 uncrossing fingers.

I wonder if the plane might have been a Hercules? There are only two Lancaster bombers, currently, airworthy. I think they're trying to restore another so it can be flown. They have a bomb bay (or is a mumb bay now?) in the belly of the plane.

Fingers recrossed.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/10/2024 12:31

Oh dear, that's a real bugger. It may be worth posting on The Doghouse board, there are some people there who rescue/foster greyhounds (I think CMOTDibbler does for instance), they might possibly know of local rescues.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/10/2024 12:35

Also best wishes for getting the right meds. The wrong one is likely to cost the NHS more in the long run (even apart from not being the best for you) so be assertive!

ErrolTheDragon · 15/10/2024 13:46

Work (anonymous) annual 'satisfaction' survey today. Last page...'gender identity' man or woman, or (forget the exact wording) 'choose to identify differently'.

Choosing this gave a text box so I told them, woman i.e female sex, I don't identify in terms of 'gender identity' and that the question was somewhat discriminatory. I'm not sure the company that supplies this survey is in the U.K., and I fear no one will actually read what I said ...never sure whether taking the third option is a good idea or not.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/10/2024 13:50

Well done, @ErrolTheDragon!

Being a stay-at-home-introvert with almost no social life, I rarely get to fill in forms so don't have the chance to nail my colours to the mast.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/10/2024 14:10

The GP has just rung - early - and no finger crossing is needed. She was happy for me to go onto the dapoglofizin, and is putting it on repeat prescription for me!

I'm sure it was all the good thoughts from the Bluestockings that did the trick.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/10/2024 14:13

Good! Hope it suits you.
