Oh Spartacus...that looks like an assault to me!

ifIwerenotanandroid · 14/10/2024 18:20

DeanElderberry · 14/10/2024 18:10

The main gerbil in the top image looks pleasant enough, but what's going on in the background? Has that gerbil eaten the leg and head of the person who owns the clothes or is it colonising a Guy Fawkes dummy constructed to celebrate a particularly brutal form of execution?

FuzzyPuffling, I'll have to go and look at that now, but will probably just lurk on it.

Sometimes, dear Dean, it's best not to enquire too much into these things.

Just enjoy the patterns of the fire & the crackling of the logs (& a large glass of something good).

This is the CS Lewis quote I heard

If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end; if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin, and in the end, despair.

The DW guy quoted it to a couple of GI bods who, to be fair to them, sat down and had a chat with him,. I think it's a bit long for a t-shirt slogan.

Clear thinking and honest, l like that.

Spartacus has rather over egged the whole cat thing. She's cat squared.

AlisonDonut · 14/10/2024 18:24

Evening all <oh my poor knees, I must stop doing that>

It was Spartacus' turn to be the furry today! I'm going to the bar, can someone with thumbs help her out of the suit, the zip is stuck!

You're looking extra shiny today Boily, have you been polishing the old carapace again?

FuzzyPuffling · 14/10/2024 19:13

Would Spartacus like to sit on my lap? ( My real life cat has beggared off at the first sniff of food)

I see the the wine list now has a red Vin de Pays des Bouches-du-Rhône. I might try that tomorrow.

Vin de Pays des Bouches-du-Rhône or IGP des Bouches-du-Rhône as the modern nomenclature would have it is, like all Vin de Pays, a bit of a lucky dip. It can come from almost anywhere in Provence and can be produced from almost any grape. This one is produced from the hills above Aix-en-Provence and the grape is exclusively Syrah.

It is a surprisingly rich and powerful wine, softened slightly with a subtle acidity and, at 14.5% ABV, not recommended for small children. The notes that I got were damson, burnt toast and the cherries bottled in vodka that my grandad used to bring back from Poland. There was more lemon in the bouquet than on my tongue but this isn't a criticism.

I drank it with a grilled lamb rump, crushed potatoes and leeks with cream and garlic. A great combination.

I'm not a believer but some of the writings and sentiments of people who are can be truly uplifting. I think I mentioned somewhere on MN recently one of my favourite poems

High Flight
By John Gillespie Magee Jr.
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds,—and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air ....

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark nor ever eagle flew—
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

And I heard a CS Lewis quote earlier today from one of the Daily Wire blokes that gave me feels. I'll try to find it.

I don't need my trio of support animals any more - I could keep them permanently just cos they are sooo cute and cuddly, but I'll do the right thing and pass them on to you FuzzyPuffling as you sound like you need them moreFlowers

I love this poem too. I first heard it recited by, of all people, Ronald Reagan! He quoted it in his address to the nation following the Challenger disaster in 1986 [I think] it seemed so incredibly and movingly apt.

Thank you for posting it.

FuzzyPuffling · 14/10/2024 21:31

The writer was only 19 when he was killed in an air accident. RIP, John Gillespie Magee.

Thank you @Marie...I think we have plenty of cuddly support animals to.go around. There never seems to be a shortage!

To go with your wine

A GLASS OF SYRAH
By Bill Homewood

We shall leave you footprints in your sand,
Everlasting ripples on your pond,
Horizons infinite beyond your land
And for your hopes a what-you-wish-for wand;
We shall leave you all that we have built,
All that we have dreamt and then made true;
We shall not bequeath you debt nor guilt -
Where anything was owed we paid our due;
We shall leave romances in your sky,
Poems shouting words of love, not loss,
Songs and tunes to lift you by and by,
A hoard of golden thoughts all washed of dross;
We ask for little; just one thing we crave -
Please spill a glass of Syrah on our grave

Bill Homewood
