https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance

Just a refresher on cognitive dissonance for anyone not familiar with the term.

In the field of psychologyy^, cognitive dissonance is described as the mental disturbance people feel when they realize their cognitions and actions are inconsistent or contradictory. This may ultimately result in some change in their cognitions or actions to cause greater alignment between them so as to reduce this dissonance.[1] Relevant items of information include peoples' actions, feelings, ideass^, beliefss^, valuess^, and things in the environmentt^. Cognitive dissonance is typically experienced as psychological stresss^when persons participate in an action that goes against one or more of those things. According to this theory, when an action or idea is psychologically inconsistent with the other, people do all in their power to change either so that they become consistent. The discomfort is triggered by the person's belief clashing with new information perceived, wherein the individual tries to find a way to resolve the contradiction to reduce their discomfort.

Nobody believes they are women.

There are people who pretend to believe they are women, and people who don't pretend. And more and more people are moving from the former group to the latter.

I linked this video already, but its worth repeating. She is not pretending. She is what is says she is, 'a woman with a penis".

s

In another video she talks about taking female hormones and the effect that has on her. From identifying as a gay man before her transition she now identifies as a straight woman. It's disrespectful to tell her she is pretending.

Ok. He is merely mistaken, then.
He is a gay man with such strongly internalised homophobia that he cannot accept his homosexuality.

"Identifying as" is neither here nor there when it comes to sex.

"What makes you a woman is that you know you're a woman and nothing else."

That's a load of meaningless guff.

Anyway, actual women need and deserve a word for themselves which doesn't include members of the opposite sex purely on the basis that they "know" they're women and "no one can take that away from" them.

No one can take being a woman away from them because being a woman is something they can never have in the first place.

The only way they can be women is to change the definition of the word so that it no longer has any objective meaning.

And what is the point in that?

They can't actually be women but if they can make enough people pretend they are women then they can access women's spaces which were previously off limits to them. That's the only thing that changes. And no matter how much I try to be sympathetic to them and understand their point of view, that's what it always comes back to in the end.

I am glad you find it compelling.

It is not disrespectful to treat a male person as the correct sex of their sexed body. Ie. As a male person.

And it is fucking disrespectful to emotionally manipulate society to change the established language to accommodate your demands when you are a male demanding that you are to be known as a ‘woman’.

This video absolutely shows how misogynistic demanding those language changes are.

There's no such thing as a woman with a penis. You know this, I know this, whoever this person is knows this. Why do you bother pretending that anybody does NOT know this?

If only the worst of the global and historical experience of biological women was being ‘disrespected’! 🙄

The individual in that video may look beautiful and have many visual attributes of a woman but they are not one and can’t possibly know what that means beyond some shallow aesthetic role playing.

But he is pretending.

He can believe whatever he likes about himself.

You can even believe along with him.

But

I don't have to play along,
I don't have to pretend,
I don't have to believe,
I can say what I know is true.

He is a man.

Possibly that was shorthand, I assumed the meaning would be obvious to all but those determined to misunderstand. The concept of womanhood predates (by some millennia) the modern understanding of genetics. If your definition of womanhood rests on XX chromosomes, how would you have differentiated before being able to do a DNA test?

Take for example the boxers in the olympics that everyone on here was so het up about. If you believe that her DNA test showed her to be XY (noting that I’m not aware of any conclusive evidence that this is the case- but I’m willing told that this is now in the public domain), how would you have excluded her from being a woman before genetic testing, given that she was assigned female at birth so presumably has cis female sex organs?

But the definition of woman doesn't rest on a chromosome test. XX is very strong evidence of being female, ie being of the sex which produces large gametes. Which is what female means.

How can there be such a thing as "cis female sex organs"? Doesn't "cis" describe gender identity? How can actual physical body parts be "cis"?

The boxers were assigned female at birth because their external genitalia were ambiguous at birth. By puberty, it would have been obvious that they were male.

We got "het up" about it because we don't like to see men punching women for sport, not do we like unfair competition.

Helleofabore · 30/09/2024 21:16

It seems we need a reminder on every x pages:

No male can ever experience life as a woman. They can only ever experience life as a male person who believes they are a woman.

Even when they 'act' like a woman, they are acting as they believe a 'woman' should act. Which is fucking misogynistic!
Even if they are treated 'as a woman' by some people, they are being treated as a 'male who presents as a woman and believes they are a woman'. Because their every reaction is based on that. Not on them being female in any way.

Even when they have extreme body modifications, it is to be their own concept of what a female looks like to them. It is not what a female is. How can it be?

The only way a person can experience life as a woman, is to have a female body, formed around the production of large gametes, even if it doesn't produce those and to navigate their life based on the decisions they and society makes that revolve around them having that body.

A male can conceptualise what it might be like to be a female, but that is all it ever is - their concept of being female.

They may do it because they don't feel they fit into how they conceptualise how a male person interacts with the world (ie. their own stereotypes around being male) or they do it because they want to be seen as a female (using their own stereotypes of how a female navigates life). It really doesn't matter though. Their motivation is irrelevant to the outcome. And I consider the outcome can only be described as misogyny.

Which is that they will always be just a male who believes they are something they are objectively not.

How can the material reality be any different? This is why someone's gender is only based on someone's philosophical belief. And philosophical beliefs are fine for people to hold, but not one person in the UK has to comply with another's philosophical belief.

The logic cannot be any different than that I am afraid.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 30/09/2024 21:21

oh my godddd

why can't you lot just believe in magic?

or at least pretend that you think magic is real so that people who believe in magic feel that their beliefs are respected?

every time you point out that mammals are dimorphic a fairy feels disrespected

Ereshkigalangcleg · 30/09/2024 21:28

That's up to this individual. I don't see why I, a woman, should see a male as a woman though. What about what I feel about it?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 30/09/2024 21:29

Sorry meant to quote you @Drinkdrinkduuurink

Helleofabore · 30/09/2024 21:30

I encourage that video to be posted widely.

Because seriously, by the time women watch to the point where they are told it is none of their business, so many will be thinking…. Hang on…. It fucking is too my business that a male person is demanding to be treated like a female, is a nurse (so… does that mean it is no female patient’s business too???) and is demanding that people accept that the words that women need to describe themselves now include male people (with or without penises).

It is surprising when people post such videos and really don’t see how others react to being gaslit.

Sortumn · 30/09/2024 21:39

Diggby · 30/09/2024 12:49

Case in point, halfway through the movie, Ferrell point-blank asks Steele “How are your boobs?” and then proceeds to prod her for the details of what it was like to wake up from breast augmentation surgery. He follows that up by essentially asking her if she’s going to get a vagina. I really can’t imagine anything that Steele could demand of the cis world that’s remotely comparable to that. And if she ever tried to do so, it could be an extremely dangerous moment for her.

Every woman who has ever been pregnant must have shared my hollow laugh at this. While I was preggers I had a professional client ask me if I was going to have a vaginal birth on our first meeting - and almost all the women I know who have been pregnant have been asked something equally inappropriate.

10 1/2 lb!!! Did you need stitches?
Ie do you have any fanny left? 🙄

This article is golden.

"For our own part, trans women are curious about cisgender folk, too. We want to know things like: do you actually think I’m female, or am I just a deluded guy in a dress to you?"

You don't actually want someone to feel they can freely answer that, do you?

🤣

HelenaTranscart · 30/09/2024 22:16

The Guardian comic takes bungs from the trans lobby and is staffed by activists. I cancelled my subscription years ago when I peaked. It's a vile publication best used for cleaning up after the dog's been sick.

Hairyesterdaygonetoday · 30/09/2024 22:17

”For our own part, transwomen are curious about cisgender folk, too. We want to know things like: do you actually think I’m female, or am I just a deluded guy in a dress to you?”

Years ago I saw a comedy sketch in which a narcissistic man was boring on about himself and the book he had written, to a woman whose eyes were glazing over.

Then he paused and said “But enough about me, let’s talk about you! What do you think of my book?”

But I have a sinking feeling that the transwoman quoted above is not joking. …

TofuTart · 30/09/2024 22:44

JazzyJelly · 30/09/2024 13:45

Exactly. I would never be upset by someone calling me a man because I know it's not true. The reason he would be upset by being called a man is because he knows it is true.

I'm not a man, I''m not trans, I'm female.
I've been told I look like a man. It can feel shit whether you "know"you're female or not.

TofuTart · 30/09/2024 22:51

Chessfan · 30/09/2024 14:16

I literally have zero interest, and why would you think I do?

Wear a dress, wear a spacesuit, what do I care?

You know why trans men feel so pissed and discriminated against? I personally think it's because when they stick on a dress they get 1% of the daily discrimination women have to live with ALL the time. They suddenly aren't favoured in all ways, automatically, as men tend to be, and they presume it's because they're trans. NO you're just getting a taste of what it is to be a woman. Welcome to our world 😆

Why would a trans man "stick on a dress?"
They identify as men, but were born female.
You sound confused

Ignoring the fact that I think the poster meant a man who says he's trans, why can't a transman, a female identifying as a man, stick on a dress? Are you saying men can't wear dresses? There's nothing female about a dress, it's just a piece of material.
