I'm so sad to see her go, she was the shining light within the Labour camp.

Rosie Duffield has been very patient for a long time and I am intrigued as to why she's chosen this time to resign from the Labour party. I really hope there isn't some big scandal looming. I didn't vote Labour (I was happy to see the Conservative party ousted from power but wanted my local Conservative MP to go back to Westminster in opposition) but I dared to hope for a period of competent and sleaze-free government.

I like to think Ms Duffield will be more effective as an Independent MP than she was able to be inside the party.

I think her letter is pretty blunt on why

Myalternate · 28/09/2024 22:59

Nadia Whittome has commented on Rosie ….

”No matter her views on her stated reasons for quitting, Rosie Duffield has made a political career out of dehumanising one of the most marginalised groups in society.
She should never have been allowed the privilege of resigning. Labour should have withdrawn the whip long ago”

🤬

She has certainly been emphatic.

I hope that's all there is to it. As it is, it's quite enough to make a principled MP hit the button on the ejector seat.

Thevelvelletes · 28/09/2024 23:02

It was refreshing to hear her say , about the tough choices affecting only the poor and vulnerable and not one of those choices affecting anyone in parliament.
All in it together.. bollocks.
I've been labour voter all my life and expected better from a Labour government.

StainlessSteelMouse · 28/09/2024 23:08

You know I hate to be rude, but I'm beginning to suspect that Nadia Whittome may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Is Nadia Whittome the one who’s all in favour of degrading-and violent-sex-with repulsive-and-potentially-lethal-strangers-for-paltry-amounts-of-money as a career option for impoverished and desperate women? Or was that a different “I’m young and progressive, I am” TRA Labour MP?

I like JKR's reply to her:

Rosie Duffield was one of the few female Labour politicians with the guts to stand up for vulnerable women and girls, while self-satisfied numbskulls like you fought to give away their rights and spaces. TL;DR Keep her name out of your mouth.

Could she not join the Party of Women, thus giving the party its first MP?

I think she wouldn't see herself in alignment with KJK politically.

Mollyollydolly · 28/09/2024 23:49

I'm intrigued to see what more is to come on Starmer and Lord Allie. So much mad speculation on X. I'm sorry Rosie has left Labour but she can say exactly what she wants now so it's not all bad.

Slothtoes · 28/09/2024 23:54

A huge loss to Labour. Total fail by Starmer to have let her leave and/or cause her to have to leave. I respect her for knowing when enough is enough. It’s mortifying and scary what she’s had to put up with over the years from her own party members (all the while with many others agreeing with her)
I wish her well as an independent.

UtopiaPlanitia · 29/09/2024 00:48

Fair play to Rosie for refusing to go along with the grubby, grifting, heartless behaviour of the Labour government. Rosie has principles and she is refusing to put up any longer with a party leadership that ignores and belittles her.

I didn't have high hopes for this government but they've sreally hocked me with a lot of their policy decisions and behaviour. I hoped they'd be a government of the Left that would want to take steps to reverse social and economic decline but they've made it very obvious that they're not that bothered about the plebs really, they just want their turn at the trough.

Abhannmor · 29/09/2024 01:00

hairbearbunches · 28/09/2024 18:54

I hope more of them have her courage and stick two fingers up to Starmer's party. It's not a Labour party in anything but name.

There's rumours of a left wing party potentially coming out of the shadows. What the fuck makes this government think after Britain's suffering right wing policies since 1979 that more of the same is going to pull us out of the hole we're in.

They're just in it for themselves. Same trough, different colours. Say what you like about Corbyn. He couldn't be bought. The ultra high net worth lifestyle didn't interest him at all. This bunch, you really can't put hand on heart and say the same, can you?

100% . Corbyn has always supported Arsenal - same as Starmer. Except he buys his own tickets.

Classic DARVO.

Whittome in her role as MP has made both misogynistic AND transphobic statements, many times.

What is the nepotism she is talking about?

That was my question, too. Not only Sue Gray’s son, apparently.

The BBC article linked above says

Sir Keir was given a shadow home office cabinet role in 2015, just two months into his time as an MP, and in turn appointed several newly-elected MPs to junior ministerial positions in 2024.
One of those, Foreign Office minister Hamish Falconer, is the son of Sir Keir's first shadow attorney general Lord Falconer, while Liam Conlon, son of Number 10 chief of staff Sue Gray was made a parliamentary aid to Department for Transport.

Are there more?

nettie434 · 29/09/2024 04:54

I am guessing that the timing is because now the Labour machine is demanding expressions of loyalty to Keir Starmer to counteract all the negative publicity he's getting, Rosie feels 'Why should I be loyal when I've had so little support from him?'

It's a devastating letter of resignation. It will be interesting to see how she works with the other former Labour MPs elected as independents.

I think the people complaining that she was elected as a Labour MP only three months ago are ignoring the lack of support she ever received from the party. As she implies in her letter, being elected three times as a Labour MP in a constituency that had previously only ever been held by the Conservatives also says something about her personal performance as an MP.

Do the letters MP after Whittome’s name stand for Man Panderer?

ArabellaScott · 29/09/2024 06:46

Bbc front page article details her stance on womens rights, which the BBC calls 'trans issues' because of course they do:

'Duffield relationship with senior figures in the party has especially been strained over her views on trans issues - where she had used social media to outline her own position.

She believes there should be protected spaces where those born male are not allowed to go, like domestic violence refuges and prisons, and she is against people being able to self-identify as trans to gain access to those spaces.

Differences with Sir Keir surfaced again during this year’s general election campaign, when he was questioned about his past criticism of her stance on trans issues.

She was previously placed under investigation by the party after she liked a tweet from comedy writer Graham Linehan.

In January 2024 she said the party's National Executive Committee "completely exonerated" her of allegations of antisemitism and transphobia.'

ArabellaScott · 29/09/2024 06:47

I wonder how many are reading this para and asking questions:

'She believes there should be protected spaces where those born male are not allowed to go, like domestic violence refuges and prisons, and she is against people being able to self-identify as trans to gain access to those spaces.'

But that's the thing. Corbyn was a radical and therefore "unelectable". People were only willing to vote Labour once Labour had assured them they'd govern as far as possible like the Tories, while humouring the illusion that we were "getting rid of the Tories".

Now people have got what they voted for, and for some reason they're surprised and disappointed.

Now you said it.Though Corbyn's policies would not have seemed radical to millions of people. Indeed they'd have been fairly moderate in Labour governments of the past. Or even Tory governments like those of Macmillan etc. But the media was smaller and weaker back then ....and the unions were stronger.

Correction: I reread and they do say 'women's rights' further up the article.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3vkdy997rko

Nice headline

And the BBC is softest on Keir out of the press

EasternStandard · 29/09/2024 08:12

Times Radio still going on about ‘trans issues’

Low line. It’s women’s rights

But they are good at exposing this, covering it now with RD interview
