I'm so sad to see her go, she was the shining light within the Labour camp.

I'm suprised she stuck around this long to be honest, I'd have left over a year ago. Good for her for going independent!

As for something being afoot, labour have made absolutely no secret of bring in self ID, if not opening then stealthily by the back door, simplifying the process down to a self declaration form.

Mumof2namechange · 28/09/2024 18:25

It's Labour's loss but not necessarily ours - she can still be vocal and influential in Parliament, and now won't have to obey the whip.

EasternStandard · 28/09/2024 18:28

A damning statement

A Labour MP has quit over the “freebies” scandal that has engulfed Keir Starmer and his government.

Rosie Duffield, MP for Canterbury, said she was standing down because of Sir Keir’s “cruel and unnecessary” policies and said she was writing to the Prime Minister today informing him of her decision to resign.

Ms Duffield condemned Sir Keir in a letter for accepting gifts worth more than £100,000 for clothing, glasses and accommodation paid by Lord Alli, the millionaire Labour peer.

In the letter shared with the Sunday Times, she wrote: “The sleaze, nepotism and apparent avarice are off the scale.

“I am so ashamed of what you and your inner circle have done to tarnish and humiliate our once proud party.”

An even bigger loss for women though. Who is going to speak up for us now?

Could she start a MumsNet party?

She will keep speaking up - she's going to be an Independent. And it's not as if KS paid any attention to her advocacy for women anyway. Just froze her out.

She may have more chance to speak out.

I hope she doesn't end up in Ref*rm. They will be schmoozing her.

What a bizarre remark. Rosie is Labour through and through. And she's said she'll sit as an Independent.

Crikeyalmighty · 28/09/2024 18:32

I agree with her on the trans issue but can't stand her on anything else- I think she is way off the mark on lots of things and somewhat unrealistic

FlirtsWithRhinos · 28/09/2024 18:34

Fucking hell that's a bridge burning letter!

I wonder if there's something coming in the budget she thinks will be a red line for her constituents.

Like what?

lcakethereforeIam · 28/09/2024 18:37

Just read this on the BBC, says she'll sit as an independent. I can't really blame her.

Livinginaclock · 28/09/2024 18:38

I admire her for doing it, but gutted that she's left. She was a strong voice for women.

Of course she won't. That would be nonsense.

Perhaps there are other Labour MPs who will be making a similar move. It can't be nice to be fodder in a huge parliamentary majority for a party that has been so ruthlessly centralising and which is not doing a stellar job at living up to its principles.
It wouldn't be surprising if there was a choreographed resignation by several MPs and the establishment of a small former-labour parliamentary grouping.

larklane17 · 28/09/2024 18:42

I'm sorry that she's resigned, she has principles and speaks up for them every time.

It is, isn't it? Seems a slightly strange matter to trigger a full resignation. I wonder if perhaps the party was looking (again) to get her out.

Her constituents are an interesting mix. So what that could be I dont know.

Staunchlystarling · 28/09/2024 18:45

She’s right though, it’s shocking how quickly they’ve grabbed at the freebies and indulged in nepotism, and he is also lying to the public, blatantly so.

im not a Labour supporter, so its hard to disappoint me, but even I’m deeply shocked at how self serving they are. And if I hear one more lie or comment on hard decisions and it’s all the tories fault I might scream.

utterly shameful. Just so grubby and grabby, with their free clothes and holidays. Cowtowing to the unions and taking a couple of hundred quid off of pensioners.

keeptalkinghappytalk · 28/09/2024 18:46

Brava, Rosie! A passionate defender of women and their biological existence !

Staunchlystarling · 28/09/2024 18:47

Toseland · 28/09/2024 18:22

Oh dear. What does she know that we don't?

What you don’t think it’s bad enough already? Good grief.

NoWordForFluffy · 28/09/2024 18:50

I imagine many of her constituents have been in touch with her about the current issues, including the WFP, as well as the freebies. I would think she's made her decision on the basis of many conversations she's had on the ground, as well as her own principles.

I don't think so. She had an epiphany, not a lobotomy.

Staunchlystarling · 28/09/2024 18:52

I wonder if any others will, follow her. Or if they are all so self serving they will stay.

I hope more of them have her courage and stick two fingers up to Starmer's party. It's not a Labour party in anything but name.

There's rumours of a left wing party potentially coming out of the shadows. What the fuck makes this government think after Britain's suffering right wing policies since 1979 that more of the same is going to pull us out of the hole we're in.

They're just in it for themselves. Same trough, different colours. Say what you like about Corbyn. He couldn't be bought. The ultra high net worth lifestyle didn't interest him at all. This bunch, you really can't put hand on heart and say the same, can you?
